Bio
Born in the oil and gas deposit-rich region of North Texas, on the fraying edge of the Permian Basin, my mother was a special ed teacher, my father, a “pumper,” a far more glamorous job among the petroletariat than the name would indicate. I managed to escape the small town that spawned me promptly after High School graduation, a modicum of sanity still intact to ride shotgun with my generous portions of anger and resentment. Some five years later, I copped a BS degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Said institution and I gladly parted ways. In the intervening 20-plus years, though my only ambition has been to have ambition, I have miraculously coughed-up a boatload of freelance articles, a couple of books of dubious merit, and a metric ton of songs of occasionally inspired quality, not to mention a paralegal certificate, 11 years of experience as a legal underling, and tens of thousands of bicycle commuter miles.

It was catastrophic news for the progressive City of Austin, Texas- a University Town, a high-tech  city, a city that rates near the top of Bob Florida's creative class ladder, a blue town that gave about 75% of its votes to… Read full post »

Houston's New Mayor: This ain't Texas' 1st Gay Rodeo

PARKER and Partner
Parker and her partner

Much noise has been made outside the Lone Star State about Houston electing Annise Parker, an unabashed lesbian, to that City's mayoral  post. Many members of the chattering classes appear to be shocked that a Texas city, of all places, would elect an/… Read full post »

The beauty of genre fiction is how easily it lends itself to allegorical interpretation of the cultural circumstances that birthed it. The hyper-literati of the print and celluloid geeker-domains are particularly prone to looking upon innocent horror, science fiction, and …

States Rights! States Rights! Governor Perry's Tea Speech

STATES RIGHTS! STATES RIGHTS! Governor Rick Perry's Speech at Austin Tea Party Rally, 4/15/09-- with some more pics from the rally.

It's a little scary how much he sounds like GW Bush, at times. Even scarier is the shades of George Wallace.

How Did that Nice Kid I Remember Become a Cop Killer?

Stephen York

I remember him vaguely. That's how I remember most of high school- vaguely, be it the  chemicals or  the desire to forget the whole  debacle. I think he played some sports, and, maybe, just maybe, he was in the band. Did he play trumpet? I/…

Rainy day in the City of the Violet Crown

It had begun to sprinkle before I'd left the office on a Wednesday afternoon. I had my wetsuit in tow and hadn't had a swim since Monday. I'd been working night and day since Sunday preparing litigation documents for an upcoming trial in South Texas. Monday's swim was a lucky

A gunman killed my neighbor and my neighborhood

It seemed to be a typical morning. I had slept peacefully in my cave of a casita on Wednesday night and right into Thursday morning, August 20, 2009. I arose around 8am, which is very early for me, had an apple, some watermelon and prepared for one of my twice weekly… Read full post »

ACL Fest Day 3: Where the wild things are

Utterly, fracking exhausted! Ouch. The pain. All I can say at this  point is that I rather enjoyed the  assembly line production efficiency of the  festival.
