Consequences of Inequality

Rate: 5 Flag

Inequality produces institutions what do not serve all human beings satisfactorily. Those who create them believe that if we are to survive as a society all of us must follow these institutions. But all insitutions are fixed-not only in our own society but also in every society where inquality exists. Institution tend to benefit those at the top of society; rarely are they created help those at the bttom. Indeed, institutions often work in such a way that they perpetuate the struture and create the conditions that keep people in the place they were born. Institutions themsleves creat misery by sytematically proticting and benefits thos who succed-benefits that others do not have. Segregation, neighborhood schools, and divorce benefit some at the wxpense of others. Captalism, the corporation, regressive taxes, private ealth care, and a legal system based on the amount one can pay continue to keep some people reich and other poor.

Institution-typical ways society works and the typical ways problems are handled in societyare created over time as society develops; they are created through a competition of people who want to create institutions to serve them. The inequality of power plays itself out in that competiton, so it is the more poweful who have more say in what those n what those institutions are and who  they work for. Of course, the resulting insitutions will normally work best for the powerful people who create them, continue to control them and run them. Few of the insitutions fo society are meant to solve the problems of human misery, except when misery touches the lives of those who are powerful

Our system of private medicine and private health insurance primarily takes care of the needs of those who can afford it. Public and private education supposedly set up for the purpose of helping people raise themsleves up in the system in inequlity, mormally function to keep them approximately wherr they began. Our system of law, our political pary system, and our court and prison system protect and benefit primarily those high  in the class sytem and, at the very least, function to table system of inequality that prevails in society.

For fifty years, Eastern european society is built political, legal, eonomic, and educational system that clearly came to benefit the poltically poweful at the expense of everyone else.. Through American history, we can identify a disproportionate number of insitutions that benefit the wealhty and middle clases at the expense of the poor and working classes, whites at the expense of nonwhites, and men at the expense of women. Our effort to correct misery in society have never equaled our commitment to a society built on the priciple of inequality. so ou insstitutions have change slowly, usually when less powerul groups have organized and demaned that the powerful make changes. Democracy and justise mean something only when all people are respected all people's freedom matters, and all people benefit from particular institution that exist.
