It's Not Really My Own Little World Anymore
John Leonard
- Location
- Shoreline, Washington, US
- Birthday
- August 12
- Title
- I think
- Bio
- I suppose that I should give some sort of Bio - I'm a superannuated Boston transplant to the Seattle area who came out when the bottom fell out of the Telecom industry a few years back. Engineering just ain't what it used to be and it's unlikely it ever will be again. I'll get over it.
I've lived here for five years and doubt that I'll ever get used to the west coast. That may not be a bad thing.

My First Post
From way back in 2008, mine own first post:

Greetings From Sunny Seattle
Well, actually it was sunny today, except for the part where it really rained

Walter Cronkite is dead at age 92. This started off as a comment over on big Salon, but I saw it was starting to get a bit long and besides, I'm not sure that's the right audience. So I came over here.
I'm like many Americans of a certain age; Walter… Read full post »
Just a Nice Place
I haven't posted anything in quite awhile, so I just thought I'd let people know that I was still sucking air.
The photo is of a pool in Stickney Brook in W. Dummerston, Vt., where I caught my first fish ( a brook trout) when I was about 4 years… Read full post »
Why It's Wrong
In today's NY Times, there is an article by Richard Oppel about Capt. Kirk Black, a National Guard officer, U.S. Captain Hears Pleas for Afghan Detainee. Captain Black, a National Guard officer who is a member of Baltimore's SWAT team in civilian life, is in Afghanistan to help rain… Read full post »
Can You See The Real Me? Can You? Can You?
"Well" you ask, and well you might, "just why does that John Leonard fellow hide behind photos of innocent dogs? An unfortunate incident with a flame thrower when he was younger? A biological experiment gone hideously wrong? Or even less likely, is the boy so handsome that even Cary Grant… Read full post »
Just Too Neat ...
Sometimes things are just too neat for words. This new little toy out of MIT's Media Labs certainly qualifies. For $350 in off-the-shelf parts and 3 months of free labor from a very bright bunch of people you can have one too.
Just think of the paroxysms of tech-envy you'll… Read full post »
Breaking News - US Ship Captain Freed
No real details, but the Captain of the US-flagged ship held by pirates has been freed. Three pirates are dead, but it appears the Captain is unhurt.
Read about it here . Read full post »
I Don't Want to Raise Any Hopes, But ...
It seems that we can thank a Spanish judge for doing what our own Justice Dept. won't. Which is to say, at least look into possible violations of international law at Guantanamo. While this will probably get exactly zero cooperation from the Obama administration (all part of looking forward, you… Read full post »
Back in 2003, Savana Redding had a very bad day at school, you can read about it in today's NY Times . She was a 13 year-old eighth grader at the time, and it seems that one of her friends, having been caught with a couple of tabs of prescription-strength… Read full post »
Snow and Voices
I ran across this group today and thought i tmight be worth passing on. They do a cover of "Go Your Own Way" that needs to be heard to be believed.
Time's A Funny Thing ...
For the yellow smoke that slides along the street,
Rubbing its back upon the window-panes;
There will be time, there will be time
To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet;
There will be time to murder and create,
And time for all the works and days… Read full post »
It's A Snow Day !! - And A Snow Night
Well, it does happen once in awhile. The rain freezes before it hits the ground and it snows here in Sunny Seattle. So far in Shoreline (just north of the city), we've received about 2". That's probably over Freaky's waist, so Deven will need to get her some snowshoes if she ventures… Read full post »
The Barn
Well, back in sodden, grey Seattle after a wonderful visit back home to sodden, grey (and last Saturday cold) New England. Could it be a sign of acclimatization to Seattle that I moan about the 20° F temperature in East Boston when we picked up the rental car? Lord, how delicate… Read full post »
The Little Guys Hit the Big Time

Boris and Natasha at rest - not their typical state, I assure you.
Lyrical Me
OK, I just couldn't resist, here they are, or should I say "Here I Am"?:
Who are you?
I’m a twentieth-century man, but I don’t want to be
one. – The Kinks
Are you male or female?
I’m a man, yes I am – Steve Winwood

Palin Gets Pwned
First it was Shrub and Prime Minister "Poutine". Now it's Sarah Palin getting pranked by a couple of DJs from Montreal.
Funny, when she thought she was speaking with Pres. Sarkozy, I couldn't hear any Fargo in Palin's voice. Read full post »
Where In Hell Are You?
As politics seems to be ruling the airwaves and intertubes these days (gee, I wonder why) and as Rob St. Amant points out visits to "Crazytown" are all the rage, here's something a little lighter. Just where will you end up in hell? Personally, I was a little disappointed… Read full post »
This Just In ....
Folks, we wondered if it was possible, but a McCain robocall finally got so slimy, a crew of 30 - 4- (report svary) telemarketers walked of the job in Indiana, losing the remainder of the day's pay rather than read it. These folks aren't rich people, losing a day's pay hurts.… Read full post »
A Fun Little Test - What Kind of Sportscar Are You?
Hi All,
Here's a fun little tim-killer that's safe for in-work use.
BTW - I'm a Ferrari 360 Modena!
You've got it all. Power, passion, precision, and style. You're sensuous, exotic, and temperamental. Sure, you're expensive and high-maintenance, but you're worth it.

What John McCain Brings to the Office
Step Carefully
As I (and multitudes of others) have figured it, this current incarnation of the Wall St. bailout, not that even the conservative economists are calling it that, is going to cost each of us a minimum of $2,000 (do you really think this is only going to cost only $700B?). That really… Read full post »
A Coming Storm?
Ed Kilgore has an interesting post on his Democratic Strategist blog about a possible storm brewing in Iraq. This comes into line with a piece I heard on NPR's Morning Edition earlier this week on the hunting of the predominantly Sunni Awakening or "Sons of Iraq" militias by th… Read full post »
