It's Not Really My Own Little World Anymore

- Or Isn't It?

Bio
I suppose that I should give some sort of Bio - I'm a superannuated Boston transplant to the Seattle area who came out when the bottom fell out of the Telecom industry a few years back. Engineering just ain't what it used to be and it's unlikely it ever will be again. I'll get over it. I've lived here for five years and doubt that I'll ever get used to the west coast. That may not be a bad thing.

Just Too Neat ...

Rate: 6 Flag

Sometimes things are just too neat for words. This new little toy out of MIT's Media Labs certainly qualifies. For $350 in off-the-shelf parts and 3 months of free labor from a very bright bunch of people you can have one too.

Just think of the paroxysms of tech-envy you'll send the average iPhone user (like me) into. That alone's gotta be worth twice the price, at least.

Slick! Patti's really smart (I've collaborated with some of the people in her lab in the past) and this is a nice integration of technology, with a good bit of creativity thrown in. Some of the work in my lab overlaps this a bit... I'll have to see how it goes this summer, if there's anything to write about.
Rob, from what I've heard, she's scary-smart - and so are the boys and girls working for her. This is the kind of thing I can easily see myself being an early adopter for.

It's kind of odd, I left the tech field about five years ago for a different line of work where a FAX machine is considered cutting-edge (OK, I exaggerate a little), but I still find myself taking programming classes like I never left and getting all "gee-whiz" over this sort of new technology and figuring out ways it can solve problems for me.

This would solve a lot Rob, so could you and Pattie pick up the pace an get an integrated model on the store shelves by say, this Christmas? If you'd like, I'll come to your lab and cut code for you at a very reasonable rate.
An upgrade from the forehead VCR. This is incredible.
ok, I've held off getting an iphone and/or itouch, because I have an old ipod and a perfectly good cheapish cell phone. BUT that is completely worth 350$- off to read more, and see if there is a monthly fee. Monthly fees are the kiss of death for any tech in my life. I won't even play WoW because of it.
Astounding! I don't know why but it scares me too.
The geek early adopter in me wants one now! Rob! tell us more!
Seattle K8, there is an abuse potential, true, but I don't think it really exceeds that of a smart phone. These individual devices all exist now, what we saw was a really good integration. What we're waiting for is practical packaging.

I would like to see is a way to have it disable itself when the wearer is behind a steering wheel. This should be something the cameras can catch.

Julie, there will no doubt be a monthly fee, but it should be on the order of what an iPhone goes for, including voice and data.

Dorrella - they're right up your alley. I can se you now ...
Wow.

That is just so cool!

But I'm also getting visions of Dilbert walking around waving his hands .... (you remember THAT one, right? ;-D). Hopefully folks will remember to give the people around them a little space.

Thumbed. Man, that defines innovative!
I certainly remember that series. but from my tech days I'm more used to Marketeers walking around waving their hands an expecting stuff to magically happen.

Yes - I know that I split an infinitive. Just because Pliny couldn't is no reason I shouldn't.
