Filmmakers Jay and Mark Duplass are back with a little independent film called The Do-Deca-Pentathlon. Brothers Mark (Steve Zissis) and Jeremy (Mark Kelly) reunite for Mark's birthday and relive old rivalries from their youth. Mark is married with a preteen son and Jeremy is a single, professional poker player. Of course, their lives could not be more different from one another.
In their younger days, they created and participated in The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, a 25 event competition which would leave the victor crowned the most awesome brother for all time. Due to an interruption of the final event, the matter of who actually won the first Do-Deca has long been contested. When it is discovered that the film footage of the original has now been taped over by their mother, the brothers decide to compete again.
A major obstacle in their plan is Mark's wife Stephanie (Jennifer Lafleur) who doesn't want him to do it. His recent diagnosis with depression and his doctor's order to stay away from stress means that the Do-Deca could be his undoing. So the brothers join forces (along with Mark's young son) to do the competition right under her nose. The event consists of covert ping pong games, laser tag camouflaged as a family outing, and grocery store runs that turn into hours of competition.
As the two brothers get further into the competition, they both realize that their rivalry and jealousy of one another does not end with the Do-Deca. It goes much deeper than that with both men envying the life of the other. For better or worse, the Do-Deca-Pentathlon is finally resolved after years of controversy and the brothers are stronger for it.
Jay and Mark Duplass originally wrote this screenplay as a big studio comedy, but decided to produce it themselves. And I'm so happy they did. This is a wonderfully complex film that accurately portrays the relationship between brothers as only a pair of brothers could do.
Do-Deca-Pentathlon is in theaters in limited release, but you can catch it now on iTunes. If you have a brother or know a brother, check it out.
