War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it.
In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
H. L. Mencken
I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we're really talking about peace.
George W. Bush
It is part of the general pattern of misguided policy that our country is now geared to an arms economy which was bred in an artificially induced psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an incessant propaganda of fear.
All war is deception.
Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war. Both bring a temporary prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunists.
To establish any mode to abolish war, however advantageous it might be to Nations, would be to take from such Government the most lucrative of its branches.
You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake.
A large catastrophic event is the result of the release of potent powerful forces whose slow but inevitable build-up can be monitored by the proper observation and perceptive awareness. A bolt of lightning or an earthquake may seem to come out of nowhere but it is at least theoretically possible to observe the slow build-up of the energies that are finally triggered into disasters.
This is true of a great many human historical social events as well as the simple excesses of nature. All of the major events of recent history, the two world wars, the rise and fall of the USSR, the recent corruptions and financial excesses that led to the current deep recession, the forthcoming demise of the US middle class due to the suppression of fair and proper distribution of income out of the great advances in productivity from technology and the export of well paying jobs to lower labor cost areas and the obvious subsequent destruction local of market power, etc. All of these exhibited clear signs of their development and yet, strangely, caught even professionally trained observers by surprise. I suspect it is because people didn’t want to see the coming avalanche of problems rather than any incapability.
The tragedy of the Twin Towers in New York City is no exception. For two centuries, to a great extent, The USA has been insulated by its oceans to a large degree from the violence that ripped through the rest of the world pretty much continuously over those times. But technological advance has totally changed the ease with which products and materials and people can move through the world and now that facility can obviously carry destruction as well.
A few million dollars is not that much money anymore for an incensed group of determined and probably somewhat demented people to do great damage and it is frankly an amazing feat that a relatively few people armed with only what amounted to pocket knives and a sense of total self sacrifice could inflict a horrible death on thousands of totally innocent people, totally destroy a major piece of architecture, and energize and radically alter some of the basic forces in that rather large democracy to undermine and destabilize the historical established rights of those people to live in peace and security. And, beyond that, to trap that nation into expending countess billions of currency in military efforts that have not in the least improved their security and sent the country into an economic spiral of huge damage decades for to come.
But just as a lightning bolt requires an ionized path of air to guide it into it’s fierce display, the events of 9/11 were well prepared beforehand. On one end by the many instance of US power to install undemocratic authorities in the Middle East such as the installation of the shah in Iran through the action of the CIA to the support of Saudi Arabia and even, initially, to give a helping hand to Saddam Hussein and Bin Laden before they became convenient ogres. And, of course, the frightful mistreatment of the Palestinians by the Israelis with the consent of the USA is rather unhelpful. To expect that these policies and several more in the same vein would result in no reprisal is pretty naïve.
On the other end it is open knowledge that the G.W.Bush regime and it’s neocon acolytes had several declared motivations for military operations in the Middle East. All those assumedly vulnerable tin pot regimes sitting on all that oil seemed an easy pushover.
And so the stage was set to “bring order and peace” to a tormented region supposedly crying out for the brave generous conqueror to save them from their evil masters.
It took a huge amount of outrageous lying coupled with the massive fright and horror generated by the fall of the Twin Towers to enable the well-armed dove of Christian love and peace to strike in the name of justifiable retribution. And now we are well rewarded by the further deaths of over four thousand American citizens, even less national security than we had to start with, many hundreds of thousands of Iraqi innocents dead, huge and unaffordable military expenses, violent abrogations of basic civil rights and a culture of legal sadism fairly well established and, after almost a decade, no end in sight.
As a nation we shall not forget
Those small people whose black eyes boiled and burst,
Whose flesh hissed in the heat of our artificial sun.
Some flew like scattered sparrows sailing,
Black and too surprised to die
Before their fried skin
Steamed away their consciousness.
It was the angry flame of a god
Bereft of care for humanity
That we wielded to slam finality
On a cruel era, and we failed.
We still hunger after righteous revenge.
Thousands delight each night in flickering shadow murders.
We buttress confidence to dispatch with lesser tools
Those who offend our sensibilities,
But hold god fire in our back pocket
And quail in waiting Thor=s hammer to descend.
