Greetings from the Bottom of the River

Rate: 11 Flag

I've been holding out for a more substantive update, but this will have to do for now. As you well know, Open's been frozen for the past few weeks due to the massive quantities of spam currently choking the site. I physically can't update the cover or navigate new posts, much as I've tried. Further to this, we're looking for a regular moderator to help clean up both Open and big Salon. You can read more about it here

When I have more to report, I promise to let you know.

Sincerely,

Your Embattled Editor

We thought you might be swimmin' with the fishes. Nice to hear from you! It's really reassuring when you can bob to the surface.
JAKE!!!! YOU'RE ALIVE!!

(Wait, or, by your title, you're dead...in which case, I'll send some nice flowers!!! Pre-peed on and everything!! :D)

Anyways....glad you're alive!!! YAY!!!
Thanks Jake! It's certainly not your doing.

*You* can't update the cover or navigate new posts?
Oh god, what a mess.
I really want to be on your side...but dude...please...

The Salon Red Page runs beautifully. Do what you are doing there.

Charge us a buck or two, maybe more. That'll keep spammers away.

give a few of us here a little bit of admin time. With only enough power to recognize and delete spam. We could do it in shifts. It wont take long before those idiots will give up. A lot of people here dont now that we can help by going into these spam sites and flaggin them.

And this new thing they are doing, putting it in our comment area is the easiest to fix.
Do what Youtube does and rankle anyone that posts more than two comments in a row to have to unscramble letters

But in today's technology this is absurd.

You have disabled the search engine.

It seems you are breaking things as well.

what you need is advice from other sites that work, and that's pretty much all of them that work better than open. And the first place you look is in your own back yard. The Salon Red Page

Jake,
Another very viable avenue.

Make people wait to be approved. Since the new internet law "WHOIS" is in effect, it is illegal for them to say they are anything other than themself.

They could very well lose many rights. Their computers have registrations as well and can be blackballed. Analysis of sites being spamvertised by a given piece of spam often leads to questionable registrations of Internet domain names. Uncoordinated activity may not be effective, given today's volume of spam and the rate at which criminal organizations register new domains or register as users on sites like this .

A coordinated effort, implemented with adequate infrastructure, can obtain good results.
ferget it man......this place is the definition of.....F_U_B_A_R!....
Salon's losing a lot of goodwill. If they're really going to do something, I hope they do it soon.
Getting a regular moderator is a good idea. But you know, as do we all that no one person can keep up with the spammers. Hire three people just for that job until you make it very clear to spammers that they will have an extremely short run on OS.

That can be done remotely and there are plenty of people on OS who would like to make a few bucks at it, if you gave them the knowledge they need. Heck you could probably spread it around a half-dozen or more part-timers if necessary. Or even - think about it - FREE VOLUNTEERS! who would be glad to help out.
You have resources you're overlooking.

And that isn't very smart.......
.
Hi Jake.

Presumably someone's paying you to do something. None of us are very clear about what it is you do, but I guess that's none of our business.
Fair enough.
Just : one email a month doesn't sound like 'editing' to me. You ?

Lorianne does this ten times better for less than a thousand dollars a year, on no pay. She doesn't have the hide to call herself an 'editor' either.
The other thing Lorianne does is she talks to the writers on her site. If there are issues, she discusses them. Back & forth.
That's what 'editors' do, in the real world. Lorianne does it for free.
my diagnosis:
pathological huffing & puffing and blowing your house down with intermittent delusions of grandeur-grandiosity-grandstanding give or take what was a given

my treatment:
sword swallowing x 2 BID; reinsert foot PRN; watch reruns of Pawn Stars; ingest much helium.
You surely know that since your previous post there's been a geat exodus from this site. It might have been avoided had you provided more updates and addressed the many suggestion of how to combat the spam. But the site continued to deteriorate and for many the last straw was the unannounced cessation of email notices for comments on one's blog.

Whether there will be a marked performance improvement and whether that will be enough to entice former devoted OSers are two uncertain question. But there's a real possibility that even if OS resolves its technical failings, it will practically be starting from scratch (and I mean no slight to those who have stayed on). I seldom blog so see little point in joining any new blogging site but presumably you're hoping to attract a talented and prolific corps like the one that recently left.

Your implicit admission that OS is bound to keep issuing new signons to new spammers is bizarre and extremely unreassuring.

I hope you make it a success but you seem completely overwhelmed.

Glad to hear you're alive and at least communicative. As for spammers, I have one word that would eliminate about 90% of your spammers: Captcha.

I tossed my hat into the ring, but am awaiting a request for a resume or something. As I am the only dunniteowl on the internet, it would be easy to research my moderator fu over the last seven years now.

I'd be happy to do it for pay. Holy cow, that might answer my prayers for employment that would let me keep my home. (I know, it's crass to play the sympathy card, but it also happens to be true.)

Let us know what's happening.
We're treading water trying to find some humor in all this. What a relief you hadn't been able to read my diabolically topical, latest post. Seems like everyone's disenchantments about the place earn them the most activity.

If you do run across that post, and can take a joke, I owe you a beer or something. If not, there goes my shot at the cover for another three years. Ha!

Look, Jake,

The best course under these circumstances is to DO something.

A $12 annual fee, payable in advance, and never refundable in the event a user is ejected for spamming, seems like a good idea at many levels, if allowed to the entity under which OS exists. This, coupled with the policy that no account is activated until the fees are on deposit at OS' bank, would seem two simple-minded techniques by which most spammers would be dissuaded from coming and staying.

If the impediment to doing something here is that you have to hold a meeting to plan the agenda to form a committee to have a hearing to approve an investigation into the feasibility of making a recommendation to the boss, then, Jake, quit. This isn't the place a competent guy like you should waste his talents.
“... Bottom of the River ...” Will this, we all wonder, Jake, be all there ever more will be here ...

I keep coming and reading your words here, Jake. Clarity keeps coming to mind ... for I find none. We would know ... how ? ... that ... in your words ... Open has been frozen all this time ... due to the choke of spam ... and ... that you have not been able ... physically able ... to update the cover ... or ... navigate new posts ...

Without your words here a few hours ago ... help me, Jake ... we would know this ... how ...

Forgive me but that has not been known to me. I have seen a site ... (this site that for so long has teemed with life, with more creativity than one person could ever manage to reach) ... appear abandoned by you or anyone else who might be attempting to be present for the community of writers and artists and all who participate here ... even those who simply come to read and support silently ...

appear, felt ... left alone ... empty ... closed ... ignored, perhaps ...

not frozen because an editor who loves what is here, who believes so strongly in what has been ... still ... is here ... hides here in words from a recent ... and a not so recent past ... who believes in what has for so long been given here, shared here, offered here ... to all of us ... to all who silently come to read ... to view ... to ponder and to wonder with all who wonder in and through their words ... their processes ... their givings ...

Clearly my voice speaks to the wind here when I try to leave words for you. Clearly we do not see similarly, Jake, you and I ... what is here ... just here ... no reference to another salon ... just here ... for only we who come ... we who are the community here ... oddly I thought that ... all of that ... was what mattered most of all ...

Jake, when I find your words, I find ... I feel ... so lost ...
For god’s sake, Jake, come and simply talk with us ... you seem to stay with thoughts of mind ... and stay away from feelings ... feelings ... that all of us ... feel ... far too well ...

Speak to us of what and how you feel.

Perhaps ... perhaps ... clarity ... would come from here ...
Feeling sad, reading anna1's words.
Knowing Jake won't ever read them.
The waste of time, the disillusion of this fraught place and the lies.

My wish is that Jacob Sugarman will one day own that he is no Editor, not even a Manager, barely a communicator.

People have put too much into this site, for years, to see it descend so farcically into oblivion without at least SOMEONE GETTING VERY FREAKIN' ANGRY ABOUT IT.

Embattled Editor ~ bullshit. There is nothing for you to do here, yet you still have a job. It's an amazing system. I'd love to know more about how it works.
The saddest part to me is to read of "the respected salon.com" as I did in a magazine article today -- a current article -- and to only think of the complete lack of respect for salon.com that is spreading near and far due to the sad site of open.salon.com.
Like a computer virus that is unstoppable, is a bad reputation, especially online...as you all must realize...
You're in a tough spot here Jake. You are in need of a software solution for the site, not an editorial one. No amount of moderators, paid or otherwise will solve your spam dilemma. And it is spam that has brought the site to its knees as I predicted in this conversation with Greg Correll nearly a year ago.

Somewhere in your code you commit a post to the database. At that point in time you have a number of handy bits and pieces of information available. You have the author, title and body of the post. You should also have the originating IP address of the post.

You need to modify your commit script to search the title and body of the post for strings that indicate the post might be spam. Strings such as 'vs', 'live', 'streaming', etc. If offending string is present, the script should put the post, along with the author, title, body and IP address into a quarantined table to be manually processed by a script which is executed by a trained operator. If it is determined that the post is indeed spam, with a keystroke the operator will signal the script to:

1. delete the user account for that author
2. search the database for all posts that originated with that IP address and delete them along with their user accounts as I am sure you have multiple user accounts that will be associated with one IP address.

Of course, if you are not capturing the IP address for every post into a table then shame on you. You will have to modify your commit code to handle that before you attempt any of the above.

This might seem like a lot of work but it is really not that much for a competent programmer to pull off.

Good luck to you.
The part I don't understand :

Jacob sends out one email a month, right ?
He changes the Front Page about as frequently.

What does he do with the rest of his time ?

If you are an Editor for an international publication, you'd be expected to work, am I right ?
Jake doesn't. He writes an email each month promising things will get better. What kind of job is that ? How do you live with yourself, if that's your job ?
I'm past caring about Jake. I used to care. I was sucked in, like into a ponzi scheme.
All I care about now is that no-one else gets burned by people like this. It looks god, and people hold their breath while management banks the proceeds.

I can't think of a more despicable person right now. It's a betrayal of the highest order. I simply can't believe it happened here, before our very eyes.

Please remember, Salon owns every word and every picture you've posted here.
Sorry. Sounded a bit manic there. Just : I care.

Been here for years & enjoyed it, & then this happens ... & I think someone has to be accountable, & if they have the audacity to call themselves an 'Editor' for whatever reason, they'd better own up to he responsibilities that go with that role.
I don't expect Jake to, but down the track we might just all get lucky.
They might employ someone with a clue.
I'll be at oursalon.com.
I cannot in good conscious point any type of finger at Jake. Look what he has to deal with.

(1) Salon Medea Corp (SLNM) continues to bleed losses . Makes a pig's future seem relatively bright, even when said pig is hanging from a slaughterhouse hook.

(2) SLNM claims to be operating in a cost-cutting mode. See comment on General expense in their most recent 10-K filing.

(3) SLNM's sugar-daddies are now owed over 10 million dollars. See "related party advances" in the 10-K statement. I'd imagine that you can't spend a nickel without getting these guys' prior approval. Note about $14mm in debt is accounted as "due within one year".

I just came back to collect my things (when I could finally get in) and saw that you had posted. All I can say is: Goodbye - I have found a better place.
another steve, I get personal about Jake because I take umbrage at what he's done to the word 'Editor'.
It isn't a good look for publishing generally, when this kind of thing happens.
My own best guess is that Mr Adobe has found a place to write some tax off, and we the contributors, have become the bunnies.
Glad to hear that you're alive and still with us.

Spam needs a software response, as described below, where all accounts associated with spammers' IP addresses are deleted, and offending IP addresses are blocked.

I agree with comments below about asking a small fee for OS accounts. There should be a waiting period for approval (2-3 days?), and users should be banned for spamming.

Asking a new (probably underpaid) moderator to keep deleting spam accounts is like an endless game of Whack a Mole. It's not gonna work.

Please give us a solution that will work, so this community can stay alive.
I wish you well. I've loved Open Salon and have had "first love" loyalty, this being the first place I shared my writing...but I'm tired of the promises, and "Our Salon" works beautifully. If OS comes back, out of habit I'm sure I'll drop by for visits, but I'm happy in my new home, and plan to stay.
What do you mean by frozen? No email, no ability to post? I've just returned out of hiatus, am clueless.
