Stars and Stripes: Israeli Haredim play the Holocaust card

Anyone who may have been suspecting that, as memories and common human decency fade, the tragic series of events popularly known as the Holocaust has become nothing more than a dishonest and utterly arbitrary talking point for reactionary politics was finally proven right yesterday. Haredim – ultra-Orthodox Jews – demonstrating in Jerusalem’s Kikar Hashabbat Square over the weekend have once more dropped the “H-bomb” on Israeli civil society. While there’s nothing particularly unusual about that, this time they’re driving their point home by dressing their children and themselves up in striped concentration camp uniforms and yellow stars and reenacting Jewish suffering under the Nazi’s reign of terror in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Tempers have been flaring for years over the treatment of women in the Haredi community, where the separation of the sexes is a divine command. It would be bad enough if the debate merely concerned Haredi women, more and more of whom are being forced to roam Israeli cities in head-to-toe “Taliban” garb. Now the demands extend to women of all religious persuasions who could ever run a risk of distracting the men from more serious business. The restrictions the Haredim wish to impose on Israel include “kosher” buses, where women are forced to sit in the back, separate checkout lines for men and women in supermarkets, women being forced to cross the street when passing by synagogues, and a ban on women’s images in advertising and female voices on the radio.

Last week, riots broke out as Jerusalem police removed illegal signs that called for men and women to use separate sidewalks in Haredi areas, and also when local TV crews showed up to film the event. Then, on Tuesday, thousands of non-Orthodox protesters descended on the town of Beit Shemesh to demonstrate against what they perceive as the exclusion of women in what is supposed to be a modern, enlightened society. (I wrote about all this in my blog last week.)

Last night, up to fifteen hundred Haredi men assembled on Kikar Hashabbat Square to stage a counter-protest against what they call “the exclusion of Haredim.” They equate what they perceive as ill-treatment at the hands of secular society with the persecution of Jews during the Third Reich – not figuratively, but literally. The striped uniforms and yellow stars merely underscored the point.

“What’s happening here is exactly what happened in Germany,” one demonstrator told the Jerusalem Post. Others demanded that foreign troops be stationed in Israel to protect Haredim from secular Israelis, since “Zionists aren’t Jews” but rather “racists."

If the Haredim thought the yellow stars would silence secular society submission, then they must really live in a different century. Today, hundreds of male and female activists boarded gender-segregated buses in Jerusalem and sat wherever they wanted. The demonstration remained peaceful, but it will hardly be the last word in this ongoing drama.

Israel’s secular parties and press are outraged and embarrassed at yesterday's "stars and stripes" stunt on Kikar Hashabbat Square. In a statement issued this morning, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said: “Prisoner uniforms and yellow badges with the word ‘Jew’ written in German are appalling and shocking. The use of the yellow badge and young children holding their hands up in defeat is crossing the line.”

I’ll second that. Anyone care to join me?

Although, considering that "secular" politicians like Barak and Netanyahu are itching to launch a preemptive war against Iran, I'd say the jury's out as to who the real crazies are in this story.
The stuff I've read in the NYT and online about how the Haredim have treated those who think and act differently than their version of Judaism reminds me quite a lot of the Taliban, or of any other faith that nurtures equal measures of hatred and orthodoxy. To hell with all forms of proselytizing--I think people can believe what they want, but leave other faiths and their people alone. If your God is omnipotent, He doesn't need your help in smiting your enemies.
I'll "second" with you Judy.

Unfortunately the Israel of Golda, Abba Eban and Rabin is dead replaced by Haredim and hundreds of thousands of right wingers from the former Soviet Union. I always expected more of Israel. Once Israel held the moral high ground. No longer.

That the Holocaust is a horror that stands high in Israeli tradition requires due respect for the millions who suffered, but to use it as a cheap trick for political and religious purposes defames the memory. As one non religious I regard much of religion as below reasonable good sense and decency but when inculcated it is almost impossible to dislodge. What frightens me is what seems to frighten Israelis about Iran. Here is a powerful country with a strong military well armed with enough nuclear weapons to destroy the livable world. The lack of basic reason is terrifying.
I'll gladly join the others who are joining you. I have dear several friends in Israel who will also join you! Several points come to mind:
1. Fundamentalist and fanatics exist in every society, here in the United States, as well as in Israel.
2. Extremists and demagogues have gained the upper hand in both countries.
3. The incendiary rhetoric not infrequently gives rise to self-fulfilling prophecies.
4. Ideology and religion have been the root cause of conflict since time immemorial.
5. Whatever the occasional role reason may play in individual behavior, it plays a far smaller role in collective behavior.
6. Morally speaking, societies haven't evolved nearly as far as, say, Steven Pinker ("The Better Angels of Our Nature") would have us belief.
Outrageous. A shonda (shameful act) to use the Holocaust. Gives even more political and racist ammunition for those who'd love extra reasons to annihilate Israel. This is a small but growing vocal, well organized group of hypocritical fanatics.
This is horrifying news, and I certainly hope they will come to their senses.
I was shocked when Rabin had been killed by the Orthodox .
The new development gives reason for concern.

Real Crazies? You live in Brooklyn. Who the hell needs to use a nuke on BROOKLN? Move to Tel Aviv and then tell me what you think of The Islamic Bomb. You remind me of all those 'ethnic secular' Jews of the 3rdReich who just could not imagine what was coming for them.

Me? I have no use for ANY Semites. The world has been cursed by these tribes for so long I am reminded of bed bugs. And there is no remedy. Semite Arab Muslims generally believe any Muslim who decides not to be Muslim should die.

Semite Jews similarly seem to believe anyone born of a Jewish Mother is a Jew. Jeezzuss frikn kryst. Almost no one who identifies as a Jew practices the actual Jewish Religion. This has actually been the case for at least two thousand years. Paul flat out criticises his Jewish Converts for 'living like Greeks' while still refusing to eat [Greek Food] next to the Gentiles.

I recommend you study the Talmud. Do you actually believe Eastern European Christians persecuted Jews simply because the church labeled them Christ Killers? Or because they were simply jealous? Jews held the goyim in absolute contempt. I can understand and even accept that.

What I do not accept is that this contempt justified harvesting the goyim like stinking poultry. We all hear about the famous rabbi who wrote: "Treat your neighbor as you wish to be treated. All else is commentary."

No. Thats not what he meant. He meant "Treat your fellow JEWS like you wish to be treated." Goyin were little more then natural resources....

Are you out of your mind? Nearly the entire glory of Western Civilizations is that it has bent our Alpha Males to the lash of the lesser citizens. Specifically, we have put our boots on the necks of those men who believe a REAL man does not make anything he wants; he takes everything he wants.

This is not true for every civilization now extant.
