Highly recommended: Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water by Maude Barlow

This book is thickly packed with information from around the world (like Australians, Canadians have many 'opportunities' to see the big picture) but the heads and subheads are like skimmable bullet points for us powerpoint-addled readers. Here are the ones starting on page 91 of the paperback:
The Corporate Takeover Of Water Deepens the Global Water Crisis
- There Is No Incentive To Stop Pollution
- Only the Rich Will Have Clean Water
- Nature Will Have to Fend For Itself
And then you can dig into whichever sections you are most interested in. Last paragraph of the main text:
"...water, nature's gift to humanity...can teach us how to live in harmony with the earth and in peace with one another. In Africa, they say, "We don't go to water ponds merely to capture water, but because friends and dreams are there to meet us."
