How I spent my summer vacation -- Part 1

Rate: 10 Flag

In the spring, I had convinced my daughter who lives in San Francisco to be part of the all-volunteer crew that supports the walkers for the San Francisco Bay Area Breast Cancer 3 Day the first weekend in September.  When I started to make travel plans, I decided to start my trip early – on my birthday, August 30th.

I flew to San Jose, rented a car and drove to her apartment in the Inner Sunset.  The last time I visited her in SF was in April 2007.  This was a new apartment share for her with more room and a tiny garden in the back.  Even though I had reserved a Ford Escort, they had nothing available when I was there except a Mercury Grand Marquis, or a “cop car” as my daughter called it.  We unloaded my gear and headed upstairs.

Since we hadn’t been together on my birthday in many years, Lisa had taken great pains to make it a memorable one.  One of her three chef roommates is a pastry chef and she had baked a spectacular cake.  There were gifts galore.  And we had dinner reservations at a great place in Noe Valley.  But for the afternoon, we walked around her neighborhood and beyond.  Down the hill and into Golden Gate Park.

Our lunch team’s theme for the 3 Day was Breast-stock 2008 – hippie costumes and all.  What better place to find an appropriate outfit than Haight Street?  Poked around in some fun stores, including the great Goodwill, and found a skirt that I may even be able to wear post-hippie get up in an import store .  We took the bus back up the hill (I’m a flatlander, remember?) and got ready for our dinner date with her best gay boyfriend.

Incanto was wonderful.  Intimate, but not too quiet.  The menu was interesting with something for everyone – even Patrick, who ordered baby squid with ink – quite pretty, but not my taste.

After dinner, I drove the cop car around that neck of the woods, including to the top of Twin Peaks, where it was very windy and we got to watch young Asian tourists taking many pictures while trying not to be blown off the hill.

Back to the house for gifts and cake.  The tres leches cake with strawberries was wonderful.  Everyone at the place shared with us.

Sunday, we got up early-ish and went to brunch at Zazie in Cole Valley.  I’d been emailing with Lonnie and he said he’d try to meet us for a cup of coffee.  We were just leaving, thinking it had not worked out for Lonnie to meet us, when we saw him outside.  We walked a bit and got acquainted.  Lonnie walked us back to the cop car and went to collect his son, while we headed north to Marin County, waterfall hunting and Muir Woods.

great story Julie, and look forward to the rest. I love that you got to meet Lonnie too. I'm hoping to do that myownself this coming January.
A nice reminder of a beautiful part of the country. I would add that the Mercury "cop car" sounded perfect to try out some fun San Francisco driving maneuvers like Steve McQueen did in "Bullitt." Perhaps, next time??
Gee. I don't want to complain (that's a lie, I want to complain), but you teased with the promise of cake, and then you go on and on about something else, and then:
"The tres leches cake with strawberries was wonderful."
...and that's it! Then you go on and on about some other stuff, and THERE'S NO MORE CAKE TALK. What's the point? AND WHY IS THE PICTURE OF THAT CAKE SO SMALL? It looks incredible. Why didn't it have a blog entry of its own? ::shaking hair::
How strange to see one's city presented as vacation pictures! I used to live on Cole Street, so Zazie was a favorite haunt. I often stop at the water fountain you have pictured here. Where did you eat in Noe - Savor? Firefly? just curious. Lonnie notified me that he was meeting you for coffee but I was over in Marin and didn't get the message until 6p or so. Sorry I missed you and if you are ever in town again, let me know.
I have a daughter who shares your birthday. I hope someday she (or one of her friends) makes me a cake like that. Looks like so much fun.
Barry: I want to go with you in January! It's so nice having a daughter in one of the best places to visit in the world.

Thanks, Stellaa.

Steve, I don't like going down hills -- ever, any place, at any speed. I definitely do not have the Steve McQueen gene!

Freaky: Maybe I can get the recipe for your "ape."

Sandra: We ate at Incanto. I definitely recommend it. If you were in Marin and I had known, you could have met us for lunch in Saulsalito at a place Stellaa recommended. (next chapter) I promise to email the next time I come to town.

Undertow: Having a grown daughter definitely has it's perks. Trust me, she owes me -- BIG TIME!
Julie, you were in my old neck of the woods--Marin County. I haven't eaten dinner and that food, even the squid, has made me famished. Looks like it was one of those beautiful SF days. I had the good fortune to meet Lonnie at Obama's acceptance speech. He is pure delight. Looking forward to the next installment.
So maybe the next time I go to Marin, some of you natives can direct us to these elusive waterfalls, eh?
You never told me about the cake. Or brought me a piece. Harrumph.
