Texas Weather

Rate: 8 Flag

There have been a lot of posts in the past month about the weather.  Icy weather in New England, snowy weather in the Northwest, non-snowy weather in Arizona.

To all of you people who don't like your weather, I just have this to say:  Come to Texas.  If you don't like the weather, all you have to do is wait a minute/hour/day and it will change.

I live in the DFW Metroplex.  On Saturday, January 3, 2009, the high temperature was 84 degrees, tying the record for the day.  When I woke up on Monday, January 5, 2009, it was 31 degrees, with a light rain.  Do the math folks, that's a drop of over 50 degrees in 36 hours.

I left my office a bit early to avoid the fools who think they can drive on ice/think that every damp place on the road is ice.  It kind of worked.  I made it home safely, stopping along the way to take some photos of Mother Nature's handiwork.  By the way, our electricity has been arbitrarily shutting down for very brief periods all through the night.  Nothing big.

The only ice I saw was like this on my car.  The streets/ground were still warm from the weekend.

Beautiful photos, Julie and good call on leaving your office early to avoid the "experts" on the road. We have them here as well.
How to drive in ice in Texas: throw on the four-wheel drive and and go faster. Thanks for posting these photos, I couldn't make my camera go.
Great photos, Julie. I've been to Texas many times, even lived in Houston for a while. I love Texas and remember those ice storms fondly (because I was a kid and didn't have to drive in them).
ice storms are awful and beautiful at the same time. One of the prettiest sights I've ever seen was the aftermath of a terrible ice storm in Oklahoma.

Texas weather is extreme, you're right about that. Especially in the winter. I've seen it go from -2 to 70 in 3 days. And in college I went to a class when it was 70, and when class was over it was 45.

But here in Northern Illinois, the weatherman was talking about how mild it is to be today. The high will be 34. Yep, that's mild.
Gorgeous!! Thank you so much for sharing your pictures.
Most of these photos were taken in a park near our home. River Legacy Parks run along the Trinity River and are comprised of over 1,200 acres -- in almost the dead center of the Metroplex. I feel very fortunate to live close to such a wonderful area, with over 12 miles of trails and other amenities. I sometimes feel like it's my personal backyard that I condescend to share with my neighbors. It was the first place I thought of when I wanted to take photos of yesterday's beauty.
the cardinal in the tree is awesome
Thanks for the photos--the only time I was in Texas was many years ago. I got a speeding ticket.
Ice is beautiful, isn't it?

That cardinal is just amazingly eye-popping. What brilliant color! I had to go look at it full size on your Flickr page, he's just gorgeous. :)
I know you don't like snow and ice that much, but what a treat that you were able to turn this storm into these images. Simply gorgeous.
Julie, these are beautiful! Ice storms can really cause problems, I know, but they can also render the world magically beautiful.
What great pictures. I love the extent to which people freak out about cold weather in Texas. On a day when the weather was deemed bad enough to curtail most of DART's activities, I walked to work and encountered only one weather-related hazard: frozen dogshit. Which I tripped over.
