Somewhat Off The Beaten Path View of San Francisco

Rate: 10 Flag

I'm very fortunate that my daughter lives in one of the most beautiful cities of the world -- San Francisco.  When I visit her, we spend a lot of time enjoying not only the touristy sites, but also some out of the way places she has found and wants me to see.

I visited in April 2007 and was assaulted by the fragrance and beauty of the flowers all over the city.  These were growing near Ghirardelli Square, just across the street from the Bay.

We continued walking along the water to go see one of the places on my list, the Palace of Fine Arts.   You'll probably recognize it from the first photo below, but I've included another couple that I particularly like showing some of the details.

Then we walked across the street and out past the marina.

Looking back to the Palace of Fine Arts

To get to the Wave Organ, you walk on a jetty that was constructed of materials taken from a demolished cemetary.  So there are bits of monuments and various chunks of granite.

At the end of the peninsula is the Wave Organ.  I've never been there at high tide to hear the full effect, but it's still amazing.

A lone fisherman, my daughter and the Wave Organ with

Alcatraz in the background.

That was just part of one of our busy days.  It's always hard to leave, but I got this shot as I stood at the bus stop, waiting to go to the airport.

Beautiful pictures! I have only spent on day in San Francisco...that's something I need to correct. Surely it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
As Mark Twain said- it was the most european of all american cities. It's still true today.
Thanks, Steve and ICM. Steve you really DO have to correct that. And just think, per Twain, it's just like a trip to Europe. :)
Lovely photos!

I never knew about the Wave Organ. What an amazing thing.
This was just lovely, Julie. I so love the Palace of Fine Arts. My grandmother had an apartment near there and when I went to stay with her in the '50s she and I would always walk there and feed the swans and ducks. Are there still swans there?
SK: Isn't the Wave Organ wonderful? That's one of the real advantages of my daughter living there and having an adventuresome nature.

Marsha: How lucky you were! Yes, there are still swans there. I checked in my photos and, if you look closely at this one, you can see one.

Love these pictures Julie. Having just spent a week in the Los Altos area, I could resonate with everything you were saying. The Bay Area is so green and lush right now after a month of rain. Like you, I have family in the Bay Area, including my oldest son. It's a wonderful place to "have" to go to. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Mary. I love spending time with my daughter and getting to spend it in SF is a real bonus!
Julie, how wonderful! Great photos, as always. It's wonderful that your daughter lives in such a glorious place and you can visit her there.
Great pictures of a city I know pretty well. I lived across the bay, but spent as much time as possible there.

I've traveled much of the world and I agree, San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities.
oh i am so glad you are bringing your fancy camera so *i* can take pictures!! :P
