Sonoma Wine Country Tour with Stellaa - UPDATED

Rate: 12 Flag

I looked back and really can't believe that I didn't post photos from my trip to California in early June.  My only excuse is that I've been really busy.

I'm fortunate that my daughter lives in the Bay Area and I have an excuse to visit one of the most beautiful and culturally rich areas of  our country at least once a year.  Southwest had a big fare sale and I booked my ticket.

The Saturday I arrived, my daughter and I spent time with her cousin and his partner in the city, had a delicious dinner and went to North Beach to get cannolis to bring home to my hubby.

But Sunday, oh Sunday was a special treat.  After a bit of an unexpected wait, we got our car from Enterprise and headed north from Berkeley to Stellaa's home in Santa Rosa.  She had invited us for brunch, to be followed by a drive through wine country.

As I expected, Stellaa and her husband have a lovely home, but who could have expected the garden?  We had brunch with the family and then set off for the Russian River valley.  By the way, my daughter and Stellaa's niece were in the back seat chattering like long lost pals.  I'm going to let the photos speak for themselves here, with simple captions.  My one sorrow is that I have no pictures of Stellaa and her family.  My daughter did have one shot of Stellaa and me, but it was of our "better" side, and I choose not to publish it.  :)

All of the photos and more, along with descriptions, can be found on my Flickr photostream.

Russian River Bed & Breakfast

The Raford Inn, on the banks of the Russian River.  I want to go back and spend a weekend here.  I can easily imagine having coffee on the wraparound porch looking out over the vineyards and the river.  Who wants to join me?

Hop Kiln Winery

Hop Kiln Winery.  Not only are the building and grounds beautiful, their wine is pretty darned good.  Took home some of their pinot noir for a friend.

Vineyard view

Just a glimpse of vineyard heaven.

Bikers at Dry Creek General Store.

Truett-Hurst Winery - Sheep & Goats

Sheep and goats at Truett-Hurst Winery.

Truett-Hurst Winery

@ Truett-Hurst Winery.  I love the intentional unevenness of the fence.

Truett-Hurst Winery

Truett-Hurst Winery again.  This winery grows in the bio-dynamic method.  You'll have to ask Stellaa about that.

Vineyard

I think this vineyard was in the Alexander Valley.  Just before Healdsburg.

Outside Healdsburg Hotel

The wall of the Hotel Healdsburg.  Seems the vines just keep growing and growing.

i like the pictures of y'all butts. however we forgot to take photos of you guys cause we were so busy having fun and good conversation!!
Sounds like a wonderful time, and you took such great photos! Took me awhile to go to the links, but that is because I didn't want to miss a thing. Thanks for sharing your trip!
Julie, that's a beautiful part of CA and your great photo-essay brings back the memories I have of the area with its mountains and valleys. I looked at your Flickr photos and saw that the Truett Hurst Winery you visited is one valley over from the Alexander Valley where my mother-in-law has her ranch. I can't imagine anyone visiting that area and not falling in love with it. With its many vineyards, beautiful terrain, proximity to SF and the coast, it has so much to offer.
Thanks for all the comments. If you've never been to this part of the country, I highly recommend it; especially if you have a local as a guide.

John, I hope you go visit your mother-in-law often. Be sure and contact Stellaa when you're there.
Bumped for Stellaa's driving skills.
Nothing like looking at a beautiful, well manicured vineyard. I was never aware how much constant care a vineyard requires. There is one going in (several years now) nearby where I live. I have my doubts? I hope all goes well? The investor was a Annapolis lobbyist. He seems nice enough?
I don't really know him.
I talk to a few laborers.
My daughter get to practice a few espanol and say:`Adios. Bueno. I watched the pruning of merlot grapes. The East side need sunshine. I wish the former lobby neighbor luck. He needs help. Any experts out there? I shall stay out of my neighbors vineyard. Sip a thimble.
The vine photo remind me of the true story Mr. Seibert told me. His father loved the vine. However, his wife hated it because a blacksnake would craw up the vine and get into her bedroom. One day she cut the vines at the base. He left her and never came back. I guess she slept with the cowpokes after that? I shall shut my trap. Who shall join me?
I can't do that. huh?
Oh, Stellaa, you know it's dangerous to invite me! I don't know how you could improve the tour we went on, but I'd love to try.

Arthur, I think I'm with the wife. No snakes in the bedroom -- either reptile or human.
I am envious - you brought home CANNOLIS?????

Great shots, Julie. I'll have to go back and check out the set on Flickr again when I'm logged in so I can comment. You really have some marvelous shots in there. Did I say great shots? :-D

Maybe next time I'm out there visiting, the wife and I can take in Sonoma Valley. She'd get a kick out of visiting the wineries.

Thumbed. Thanks for sharing with us!
Bill, if you make it to SF, go to Stella Pastry on Columbus Avenue. Not only cannolis, but everything else wonderful. Thanks for the compliments on the photos. I had fun with my camera. :)

Thanks, Verbal.
Oh go ahead and post the butts. You can let us guess whose is whose. We like doing stuff like that around here because we have nothing else in life that amuses us as much as OS. I need to contact Stellaa as she is clearly the guide to have in wine country. You read my post on B&Bs so you know I'd feel guilty even being there (!) butt photos were beautiful (haha), really --- we WANT to see that photo.
Oh oh oh!!! I am thrilled to read this post of yours! This is one of my favorite places in the US - it's the only place that reminds me of Tuscany! Love the photos!!!!!!!
Thanks, JustMe. It was a truly great day and, as you say, as close to Tuscany as you can get in North America.
