A Response: The REAL Cowboy Code

Rate: 16 Flag

I don’t normally respond to others’ posts on here with another post, but I just read something that literally made my stomach churn.  Hontonoshijin posted Cowboy Rules, which was his response to an email he received from someone.  The email itself was actually pretty harmless.  I absolutely take offense that it was somehow supposed to portray a cowboy as opposed to, lets say, a good ol’ boy, which would have been spot on.  But, basically it was just lame.

He offered his response to each item and it blew my mind.  How can someone spew the most uninspiring, stereotypical, judgmental rhetoric under the guise of being offended? So, here’s my response to you Jack.

Email:  We open doors for women. That's applied to all women, regardless of age.

How outrageous!

Jack:  Yeah, they open doors for women.  And some of em beat women black and blue and utter slurs about niggers (and used to lynch blacks) and greasers, and their cops try to choke paramedics they think insulted them.  Why all the belligerence?

What do I care if they wave at me if they threaten to beat me up when they meet me in person because I aint like them and don't share political opinions?  What kind of courtesy is that?  It's show courtesy, that's what it is, not the real thing.  For that matter, if a cowboy tries to beat me up he might have an awakening coming (he said, in a K. Troutlyish fashion).  I've seen a lot of self-styled cowboys, and even at 65 I can hold my own with most of em.  I can swim over a mile and a half in an hour, for example.  If there's anyone out there who thinks being in favor of peace and reason makes me weak, let him bring it on.

Wow!  Who's stereotyping now?  All that from opening a door?  If people are randomly threatening to beat you up, I'm pretty sure it's not relegated to "cowboys" - perhaps your way with words has something to do with it?

Email:  They are cattle. That's why they smell like cattle. They smell like money to us. Get over it. Don't like it? I-10,  I-40, I-70 and I-80 go east and west, I-17, I-15, I-25 and I-35 goes north and south. Pick one and go.

Jack:  Ever smelled Amarillo?  If that's what money smells like to you, you're welcome to your life.  There's other ways to make money that don't stink.

So, what?  Should people not raise livestock to suit you?  You go back and forth from having lived on a farm - which doesn't make you a cowboy, by the way, it makes you a farmer - to turning up your nose at those of us who choose this as our livelihood.  Thanks for pointing out that there are other ways to make money.  Us dumb ol' ranchers didn't know.

Jack:  It's true I don't clump around in high heels all day and think it makes me manly.  Though I do have a damn good pair of Luccheses.  Actually, she paints a highly idealized portrait of "cowboys."  There aint many like the ones she describes.  In Oklahoma and now in Arizona I don't see many Marlboro men, but I do see a lot of blankfaced mean old geezers hobbling around in hats and boots and driving giant pickups (quite a few of which cost more than a good car) because everybody else does.

Are your Luccheses ostrich too?  Your ignorance is blinding.  Don't pretend to understand something you clearly do not.  The heel on a man's boot is there for the fucking stirrups!  Not to mention, the spurs.

How the hell do you presume to know what those “mean old geezer’s” lives are?  Since you know the thought process that everyone goes through in purchasing consumer products – perhaps you should start your own consulting firm – you’ll make millions.  Hell, you could have single handedly saved GM!

Email:  College and High School Football is as important here as the Giants, the Yankees, the Mets, the Lakers and the Knicks, and a dang site more fun to watch.

In the South, entire towns shut down on Friday nights to watch the high school football games.  I grew up in one of these towns and that kind of community support is not something I would toss away these days.  An entire population all rooting for one thing.  Looking back, it's actually pretty amazing.

Kids who aren't paid to play are more fun to watch any day of the week.  In any sport.  They want it.  They hunger for it.  I can’t say the same about the pros.

Jack:  I played football in junior high and high school, ran track and cross country in high school and college.  Lettered in track and football and cross country in both high school and college.  And sorry, no, but high school football is NOT more fun than the pros.  The coaches were, with a few exceptions, stupid and cruel.  It's a lie that it was about developing character.  Unless by character you mean violence and blind obedience.

I’ll refer to Mrs. Michaels’ response to this.  But, I’ll add that unless Bobby Knight was your coach, my guess is your bitterness comes from being benched.

And Jack’s closing words:   This is exactly the kind of shit that convinces people everyone in Oklahoma is sociopathic.  You and I know for a fact that is not true, so she is doing a disservice to the very people she thinks she is boosting.  Sorry to be so vehement but I have heard this kind of crap all my life and I do not intend ever to tolerate it quietly again.

The irony is not lost on me.

I'll just leave this with a true "Code of the West":

 Live each day with courage.

Take pride in your work.

Always finish what you start.

Do what has to be done.

Be tough, but fair.

When you make a promise, keep it.

Ride for the brand.

Talk less and say more.

Remember, some things aren’t for sale.

Know where to draw the line.

Simple statements for a simple life.  And each and every one of these could be describing my husband.  It’s unspoken.  I don’t think it’s so much about being a cowboy (except for the brand bit) as it is about the character of a man.  And you, Jack, have shown yours.

I didn't see the other post, and I don't really have a desire to. I will say that your words ring true. There is honor and beauty and truth and dignity in those women and men I know personally that work the land and cattle. My own uncle Maj Gen William Becker, Retired is such a man and has raised cotton and cattle before and after serving out country in a career that took him to South America, Yugoslavia and Vietnam. I don't know of a man more worth of honor and respect, but he is not unique.

Kudos to you Julie, for your fierce passion in defending those honorable women and men.
Thank you, Barry.

A simple life doesn't make us simpletons.

XOXO
Just caught another: he appears to be implying a causal relationship between opening doors and domestic and racial violence. Fun stuff. Lest we forget the difference between cranky old coots and cranks.
When I tell Paul that he "used to lynch blacks" he'll be floored.
Perplexing isn't it? Hontonoshijin's sterotypical response scolding a sterotypical e-mail.

You'll have to excuse me for a second. This old Okie needs to spit his snuff into the coke can.

Ahh dammit, I missed. Where was I?

Oh yes. Stereotyping. Perhaps Hontonoshijin's needs to seek some advice from a fellow Okie.

"People who fly into a rage always make a bad landing."
Will Rogers
The irony, right Bob?

Ah, Will Rogers, how true.
jack takes stereotyping to a whole new level.

unbelievable.
I grew up with people who lived the Code of the West and it's stood me in good stead. I see no reason to give it up.

One thing I might add: A man's word is his bond. If you shake hands on something, it binds you.
It's sick Cappy. From something so stupid and harmless, this is his response? Wow.
Emma - It really is surprising how true that is. Hundreds of thousands of dollars , work, time, what have you, are exchanged this way on a daily basis.
It is very easy to stereotype certain groups, and rural folks of the South and Southwest are one of those groups that are repeatedly subject to it. As are the folks who live in Appalachia. I feel qualified to comment on that, having been born and raised in Texas, and with a mother from West Virginia. My father was a teacher and taught Bill Moyers (a Texan), and my grandfather was a teacher and taught Chuck Yeager (a West Virginian). Neither of them were rednecks.

And like bbd, I did not see the original post.
That's the point, this guy went way beyond stereotyping - all in the defense of stereotyping. I'm not sure how that works, really.

I did link his post, but no need to read it - I highlighted the best parts here.

I just get so sick of all the bashing of the South, but even more so of hypocrites.
I'm with you. I live rural. I don't exactly fit in, but I have a mighty respect for most of the people I share the county with.
Well, be sure that there's room to escape when you tell him. You don't want him to move on to beating women. That would be a shame.
And also quite comical.
I didn't read the post you reference: I'm happy I didn't. Your post, your retort, is well done. You are the type of OS'er worth emulating.
JT, I had a feeling you were gonna rip someone a new one when I read this. Good job. The explorers, pioneers, farmers, and ranchers are who got us here to begin with. It's their "can-do" spirit that is the glue of this country and part of what makes it great, IMHO. Some people get it, others don't. I will always hold or open the door for a woman, even if she is not a lady.
Rated & Cheers!
You are a lot more polite that I was.
I know, right, JK? Aren't we supposed to be these liberal hippies who love everyone?

Paul said he'd be happy to come get mom if he can fly fish. Think about the peace and quiet!

Mr. Mustard - I really don't know what to say to that. As someone I admire, thank you.

Bubba - People really do forget and honestly, that's okay. We're here to remind them. But thinking you're taking up for those people while spewing crap? No way. Not on my watch!

Glad to know you'll still hold the door open for me.

Here's mud in your eye!
Julie, I dont read the other poster b/c he has written other things I thought were rude. I am glad you laid it all out here and you responded so well. Honestly, Jack's responses for me show a very small world, small box kind of perspective.
Wow. Glad I missed the other post - but thank you for this one. It reminds me of how people who wouldn't dare say a word against any race or religion will talk freely about "poor white trash" or "rednecks" in the most stereotyping and judgmental terms. Prejudice knows no bounds....
Ocular - You said what I was screaming at my screen!

Ariana - I've never seen the guy around. I saw the title and thought I would reading something entirely different. You're exactly right - small world and probably a very small man.

Silky - I still can't wrap my head around it.
JK - Even better! Put her on a plane. Then when we come to stalk...er, I mean, visit, the only thing you'll have to worry about is me breaking into Footloose - dance steps and all. It's really quite good.
I'm afraid that your reaction to his post is rather proving his point about belligerence. And your jibes are aimed at the wrong target - he never insulted real cowboys, he insulted a mass email that claimed to describe them.
Whoa, that's one fired up cowgirl! But that's OK, I forwarded Hontonoshijin's post to Chuck Norris. He emailed me back and said he'd be glad to "open the door" for him.
Ahh, ocular, Julie, y'all should really leave the poor horse out of it. He's got enough problems.
Allie - You seem to agree with Jack's definition of belligerence. I'll just leave it at that.

Harry - Cool. He should take some cut-offs and a wife-beater - it's hot there.

Christian - Right you are - on both accounts. How does "opening the door for women" equal calling people nigger?
It was a Chilean cowboy who would always run ahead of me to open doors, now I just stand and wait for them to open :) And no, he never beat me! Go figure...

Having grown up as an east coast city girl, the midwest cowboy code is much more to my liking. Thanks for setting Jack straight Julie!!!
Thanks blue. I too enjoy not being flipped off all the time.
I should have caught that Christian. It was, um, the cocktails - yeah, the cocktails.
I have read his pieces in the past.

It will be useless to make a comment since all one does is scream against the wind.

A person just ends up spitting on his own face.

Just because a person is able to string words together doesn't mean they always makes sense.

Thank you for bringing to light the true nature of this individual.

But a gentle piece of advice: let those like this person scream, rant, and rave. For at the end of the day they will be left with a sore throat and a lonely ego. But more importantly a blog he loves so well will be loved only by him.

No one will read it; no one else will care...

Again, a wonderful piece and I've learned much from it.

:)
I read the original post, and while there are a few moments where the vitriol seems misplaced, I didn't get the feeling hontonoshijin was specifically attacking cowboys or the supposed code of the west as much as he was railing against stereotypical behaviors. Did he, in turn, resort to some stereotyping of his own? Absolutely. Still, he didn't make it personal against you nor any rancher or singular group existing in the west or the south (btw, he grew up in the south and now lives in the west). Pretty sure if he had wanted to do so, he has the acumen to have made his piece more pointed.

It's easy to argue that hontonoshijin's outrage over a relatively harmless email was over the top, but his response was to an amorphous unknown and, as such, constituted a general attribution to those who perpetuate ungainly stereotypes. But, your piece is decidedly personal, and as such represents a complete change in tactic. That is your right, and only you can determine why you felt it necessary to go for the jugular. You say you can't wrap your mind around it, but instead of letting it go as the rantings of a bitter man, you go into pit bull mode (no offense to pit bull owners out there, lol). It's not a very reasoned approach for someone who espouses "talk less and say more."
OK - I'm late to this party but, the BEST part of the whole fracas is the name: HONTONOSHIJIN
Say it three times - fast! It's FUN!
The Best Cowboy Name ever!
Hey... that reminds me...did you name that horse yet?
Living in Makawao as a young man I spent time with real cowboys. I can't remember anything bad about any of them. High School football helped make me the "old-fashioned" guy I am today; a hard working team player.

In my experience real cowboys are real people.

But, setting foot in Oklahoma has alwasy immediately set my radar off. It is not the cowboys, but denying the ignorant, credulous, racist and religious corn god myth adherents in Indian Country is impossible.
(smerking) wonder how many times ol jack watched brokeback mountain? shure as hell don't have a clue as to what happens out side his tv ............
