Bio
I'm a 58 year old guy from Southern California by way of the Midwest. I've lived in Southern California for 11 years and spent the 30 years before that in Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota. Professionally, I am a Trainer/Consultant in the automotive industry which as everyone knows is troubled right now--perhaps the reason for my current unemployment. Before becoming an automotive trainer I sold cars for 6 years. Before that, I was CEO/COO of several Chambers of Commerce in the Midwest and worked in economic and community development for the States of Iowa and North Dakota. I have a MA from the University of North Dakota in Political Philosophy. 2 grown children, a son and a daughter live in Nebraska and Missouri. I have a 19 year old step-daughter and a 18 month old grand daughter. I like to write about a whole variety of things from my kids to cooking to politics to the car industry to my status as a "Cheap Bastid" and "Old Fart" and just random thoughts--I call my "Mental Meanderings". Please join me, comment on my ramblings, argue with me or even tell me I'm full of it. (just-walt.blogspot.com) By the way--all the crap that I write is my crap and you can't use it without my official OkeyDokey

Real Men! He-Men! Pictures! Who's the Manliest of Men?

Rate: 31 Flag

I decided to do a post on real men.  There's all kinds of stuff out there about manly-men, real men, sexiest men, etc.  And we can go all the way back to the 40's and the "original" "He Man Woman Hater's Club" founded by Spanky and Alfalfa.

he-man-woman-haters

So, let's take a look, OK? Don't just skip to the end of this to see the winner, scroll through and check out the beefcake.  You might come across someone who you think is more deserving than my choice.

So is it Brad Pitt or Daniel Craig? What do you think? Scroll on.

brad-pitt daniel craig

Or maybe it's Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or George Clooney?

Dwayne_the_Rock_Johnson george_clooney

Nope? Scroll on.

How about those bastions of "the American Way" Glenn Beck or Dick Cheney?

glenn-beck US_VP_Dick_Cheney

Naw, I don't think so either.

So, how about Hugh Jackman or Johnny Depp?  Both good looking, kind of mysterious guys.

hugh_jackman JohnnyDepp

 OK, so keep scrolling.

Maybe you think it's Will Smith? Or how about Matthew McConaughy?  Both great looking, popular actors.

  WillSmith  matthew-mcconaughey

But they're still not quite "it".

But hey, it's the World Series, so how about Derek Jeter or Ryan Howard?

derek jeter Ryan_Howard

Naw, I'd just be jealous of these guys.

Or staying with athletes--maybe one of my favorites, Brett Favre?

 brett favre

Close, but still no cigar.

Nope, here's my candidate.  A real man.  A guy who does what he loves.

......almost there

You see, he's my son Michael and he's with my granddaughter Raegan.  This is a picture of a real man.  A manly man.  Doing manly man things. Scroll down and see.

We need more men like this.  Or as they say sometimes "You da man!"

Dang, that is one manly man. You are so right about this, we send messages to our kids about how men are supposed to act. We forget to tell them that being a father is the most manly thing they can do. We need to let them know that connecting with their kids is the single most important thing that they can do.
Good work, Michael! Good work, Dad!
Thanks Walter. As if Kirsty wasn't brooding enough without seeing the final photo in your post. But I agree.
Fabulous post with a very important message!

R
Oh, yes! The previous pictures could be before they bacame fathers, but your son is the ultimate Daddy-Man.
What I love about Brad Pitt is, in addition to being handsome and a talented actor, he's a humanitarian too. The guy is the whole package. So often in Hollywood, actors or actresses just behave like entitled royalty. Not Brad Pitt. He's helping to rebuild New Orleans and create affordable, environmentally-friendly housing. He (and Santa Angelina) donated big dollars to the "No on Prop 8" campaign too.
oh walter. you gave me tears, damnit.

that is most definitely a real man there.

good job raising him up.
Thanks for the comments. More later.
But, Jane--I can't take any of the credit for raising him up. But he sure turned out more than all right. I'm proud.
Walter, if more people thought like you, maybe teachers would be paid what they're worth, and movie stars and athletes would get paid what they're worth.

This is the second real men post I've read today. Is it "Real Men Day?" Not on my calendar.
Anybody who can get through "Waddle" is more than a real man. It wasn't one of Proust's best books.
R
Reading 'Waddle' to a beautiful daughter has to be the ultimate of manliness. God Bless our sons who turn into wonderful fathers.

Poignant and touching.
omg - I wonder how all those little search engines are going to handle this post?

Let's see: Daniel Graig, George Clooney...I want to ADOPT Will Smith, Derrick...but in real life, they're all too young. So is your son, alas who IS the best pick.

Ah well, I'll just continue to window-shop, thanks.
I have to agree with you completely Walter. It's one thing to walk around looking "pretty", but it takes a real man to be able to please a toddler at story-time.

You are oh so right, Walter. The world needs many more men like Michael. All of them we can find. They are the ones that make the world a better place. Bless 'em all!
What a wonderful post. And you are so wonderful to make this tribute to your son.
Rawr! Manly man alert!
Woohoo! I love a man that reads to his kids.
Aw, that made me tear up! :) This is so awesome . . .and true! Our society needs to start appreciating Fathers again!

I'd like to add a hearty 'AMEN!" to this post, Walter! You're right - we certainly do need more real men like your son. He must be a chip off the old block.

When my mother starts bad-mouthing my son-in-law, I always remind her that he's a great father. Shuts her up. Seeing as how my dad was a complete bomb.

I always stare when I see dads and their kids (especially little girls) who are getting to know what a man CAN be.

I love that you love your son.
Michael is da man! Da Daddy-Man, the best there is for little Raegan!
HipHipHooRated! :)
Teaching a child literacy is what real and reel men should do.
Love this one Dad! And I took that picture!!! Mikey is a great Dad... Now if only I could find the picture of you reading to Mikey and I while I put barettes in your 'hair'!! :)
Completely and totally agreed. Thank you for this! xo
My vote for manly man! You did good, dad!
I followed Misha Turner.
Thanks for a hearty giggle.
I loved Spanky and Alfalfa.
I recall mentioning the He - Man Women Haters Club as a jest. The academic neighbor scolded me. I was so confused. I join no clubs. That was about 55 - years ago. I use belong to`The American Beekeepers Association for the honeymoon mead recipes. fun.

I was wondering why Ya left out the photos Smirker Tricky Venal, Bribed Dick Nixon, and Henry Kissinger? But, thanks for excluding them.
Great ending.
I met a woman who raves over the conductor who was at the Kennedy Center.
She loves Riccardo Muti.
I gotta go listen to music.
A book must be written:`

Wives of music conductors.
Thanks for all sane teachers.
Folk can join the opera clubs.
You are so right. The world needs more good daddies. However, looks like your choice is already taken, so I'll go for Brad Pitt.
He is da man. I bet he ain't afraid to change a diaper either!
I'd like to say that I want to meet someone gay.
The only man manlier that him is you for appreciting him and pointing him out!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Your son is "the Man", no doubt, together on the podium with my Husband. Those are the men we need, absolutely, and I´m so lucky to share my life with one of them!
Super-rated.
This was JUST what I needed.... Great post, great perspective, great priorities ! All the glamour of Hollywood, TV and the NFL try to dictate what real men are, but the truth is very different. Walter, you nailed it!

SO true. It's the solemn truth, I swear. Good job to you for raising this man, and hope he isn't the last.
