Look, I don't read great literature. I prefer to read books that entertain, and occasionally enlighten, in a mindless way that lets me escape. I'd rather read a light novel than watch TV 95% of the time.
So when a blogger on OS recently did a post about favorite opening lines in books, I read it with interest. And, remembering that there were a few memorable opening lines in books of a couple of my favorite novelists, I went searching. But didn't find anything--I was looking in books by Tim Dorsey and James Lee Burke and didn't find what I was looking for.
So just what does that have to do with my rather snappy "headline"? Hold your horses, I'm getting there.
Recently I've taken up reading some of John Sandford's stuff. What I like is that many of his books are centered in southern Minnesota--geography that I know pretty well. And he captures it beautifully--both the countryside and the quirkiness of the people who live there.
But even better is something I tripped across the other evening in one of his books, "Dark of the Moon". Here it is:
"The great thing about daytime sex, Virgil thought privately, is that you get to watch. Women didn't like to watch so much, which was understandable, because they were watching men, and men having sex wasn't that interesting. At least, not to Virgil. Women having sex was. Which was why he liked daytime sex."
Now, I absolutely get that. And he's right. OK, a lot of women might not get it (or might get ticked off at this) but other guys will. Am I right guys?
I'm referring to my wife here, not "Patty the daytime Hooker" from "My Name is Earl" fame.
"Patty the Daytime Hooker"
If I keep going with this, the only thing that's going to result is that it'll turn pornographic. Sufficie it to say that there's still some testosterone rattling around in me somewhere and I don't need to be any more graphic.
OK, there's another reason why at my age I prefer daytime sex. At night, when we go to bed we're just too damn tired. We want to go to sleep.
