Bio
I'm a 60 year old guy who lives in Vista California with my wife. I spent the 30 years before moving to Cali in Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota. And I have 2 grown children, a son and a daughter who live in Nebraska and Iowa and a 22 year old step-daughter lives with us here in Vista. I'm a proud grandpa with 2 grandaughters living in Nebraska. I like to write about a whole variety of things from my kids to cooking to politics to the car industry to my status as a "Cheap Bastid" and "Old Fart" and just random thoughts. And I really love writing about cooking really good, homecooked comfort food cheap. That's why they call me the Cheap Bastid. By the way--all the stuff I write is my stuff and you can't use it without my official OkeyDokey

Sing Off's "Grinch"--Vocal Music the Way It's S'posed to Be

Rate: 6 Flag

You can have your “Idol”.  You can have your “X-Factor”.  I’m a huge fan of NBC’s “The Sing Off”.  It’s the only performance show on TV that features vocal music in it’s pure form without histrionics and divas.

The 3rd season of this show just finished with a night of performances on a “Holiday theme”.  It was just a bit disappointing because I have been hoping for all 3 seasons to hear Christmas music (which is so perfectly suited to this format) performed both for its entertainment value and its inspirational value.

I’m sure political correctness played a hand in it but for crying out loud they could have done “Sleighride” or even a take on Fred Waring’s incredible “Twas the Night Before Christmas” arrangement complete with some hip-hop.  Oh well.

If you’re still reading this, I’ll move on to a video of the most delightful performance of the night.  This is a group called Urban Method from Denver, Colorado doing the signature piece from “The Grinch That Stole Christmas”.  And it’s good reason why I’ll be watching next fall when the series returns.

Great clip! My favorite Christmas show, second only to The Charlie Brown Christmas.
I have been trying to watch this show forever. But I have NO control over the remote..
HUGGGGGGGGG
Erica--thanks. This was an incredible group which consistently managed to marry hip-hop and a capella harmony

Linda--of all the "performing competition" shows on TV, this is by far the best. Real music without the divas!
Walter, I started watching this show last year and I love it. Now I can't wait for next year's shows to begin.
David--I really love the way it's been done. Plus, I love the way these (mostly youngsters) are able to use their "instrument"--their voice--to do some incredible stuff. Plus, this doesn't have all the hyperbole and divas of the other shows like American Idol.
I would have liked the other night's final show to have been more "Christmassy" though.
I don't usually watch these shows, but I think this one was cool.
Scanner, I've been bitching for years about how there are never any guys who sing bass on these shows. This guy went through the whole season just doing rhythm and then they do this song and he pulls out that cool bass voice. He's actually a little bit deeper than my singing voice--a guy with testosterone.
Oh that is so fine. Here is my recent take on a Christmas song.
