Bio
I'm a 60 year old guy who lives in Vista California with my wife. I spent the 30 years before moving to Cali in Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota. And I have 2 grown children, a son and a daughter who live in Virginia and Iowa and a 22 year old step-daughter lives with us here in Vista. I'm a proud grandpa with 2 grandaughters living in Virginia. I like to write about a whole variety of things from my kids to cooking to politics to the car industry to my status as a "Cheap Bastid" and "Old Fart" and just random thoughts. And I really love writing about cooking really good, homecooked comfort food cheap. That's why they call me the Cheap Bastid. By the way--all the stuff I write is my stuff and you can't use it without my official OkeyDokey

Cheap Bastid's Traditional Irish Soda Bread

Rate: 9 Flag

Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day and I couldn't resist the temptation to do a little "Show and Tell" today.  I cooked the whole traditional dinner of Corned Beef and Cabbage and even baked "Traditional Irish Soda Bread".

Man, the whole thing was good.  (One hint on the cabbage--we cut it up into about 2 inch squares and then put it in the wok with some salt and pepper and just a hint of vinegar--it comes out hot and cooked but still with "crunch".

So, here's the dinner:

corn beef and cabbage and bread

Here's the bread:

whole loaf3

And here's the link to my food blog with the recipe for Traditional Irish Soda Bread:

I keep my Leprechaun in my box of Lucky Charms. Thanks for commenting.
I treated myself to a rare bone in ribeye with french fries and a red wine and mushroom sauce. Drank a Guinness.
The website for the original bread won't open.Do you have it at some other place,I mean the original one.
You know I have celiac disease but I would risk getting sick for a day or so just to have a slice of that bread.
HUGGGGGGGGGGG
If I have enough flour,I'll start baking now.
Thank you for this sunday treat.
How do you prepare the corned beef?
Your food blog has been added to my favorites! I can't wait to try this...
Heidi--most people boil the corned beef. If you're going to use your oven, I'd suggest braising it. Rinse the corned beef off really well to remove some of the salty brine. Wrap it in foil and add about a cup or so of beer/ale or beef/chicken broth or even just water. Let it slow roast in the oven for about 3-4 hours at 275-300 degrees. You want the meat to still have some texture. Boiling it, especially for too long, turns it to mush. When you cut it, make sure to slice it against the grain.
Linda--it might be worth it!

Lunchlady--I take that as a high compliment coming from you.
Walter,

What a beautiful meal! This is a feast for the eyes.

It's spring break right now at my university, and the dining hall is closed. I long for my one meal per day with my meal plan.

Seriously I'm practically starving here. So thanks for posting this. If I can't have real food, at least I have your photos. :)
Diary--"back in the day" of the early 70's, I was a "starving student" too. I can remember living out of my popcorn popper which at the time was a hot ring with a pot which could be used as a burner/cooker. I lived on canned "Chef Boyardee" products and Campbells Chunky soups for weeks at a time. Which may be why by the time I got into apartment living, I started cooking regularly and have been for the last 40 years.
Thank you for your help,Walter.
We have starved as children, and the time will come when food will be difficult to come by,so in a way,it's good to get used to cooking which takes wholesome food into consideration at low cost.
My granddaughter (she has multiple food allergies) could eat this. Thank you so much!
