- Bio
- I'm a 60 year old guy who lives in Vista California with my wife. I spent the 30 years before moving to Cali in Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota.
And I have 2 grown children, a son and a daughter who live in Nebraska and Iowa and a 22 year old step-daughter lives with us here in Vista. I'm a proud grandpa with 2 grandaughters living in Nebraska.
I like to write about a whole variety of things from my kids to cooking to politics to the car industry to my status as a "Cheap Bastid" and "Old Fart" and just random thoughts.
And I really love writing about cooking really good, homecooked comfort food cheap. That's why they call me the Cheap Bastid.
By the way--all the stuff I write is my stuff and you can't use it without my official OkeyDokey

Foodie Tuesday: A Cooking Show I'd Love to Watch
No recipe today. I spent the weekend cooking and didn’t feel like writing something that no one is really interested in anyway.
So what to do on Foodie Tuesday? Well, Cheap Bastid has always had a bit of a hang-up over people who have to “foo-foo” their foodie food, use… Read full post »
When You're Just Killing Time--Check Out Chuck Lorre
Just thought I'd pass this on with a long weekend ahead. If you've got a bit of time to kill here's a site that will amuse you.
It's Chuck Lorre Productions (http://www.chucklorre.com).
Chuck Lorre is the producer of "The Big Bang Theory"--one of our favorite TV shows about 4 nerds and… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Cheap Bastid’s Porn Dogs
I tried an experiment not too long ago. A while back I posted what I call “Weiners Wellington” where you wrap crescent roll dough around hot dogs—what’s been called “Pigs in a Blanket” for a long, long time and a simple dinner that kids have always loved.
But… Read full post »
Track on TV and Rigor Mortis (yep, I'm talking Bill Cosby)
Today's a quiet kind of Sunday. I read the San Diego paper and then walked up the street and bought a copy of the "North County Times" too.
Isn't it too bad that the "local", suburban paper is actually a better paper than the "big city paper" the San Diego… Read full post »
True Grit(s) Or is it Polenta? Cheap Bastid's Foodie Tuesday
There’s an old hayseed saying, “nothin’s gooder’n grits”. I’ve always loved grits with breakfast—except you pretty much never want to order them at your favorite breakfast joint because they’ll probably be instant grits. But real grits--with… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Cheap Bastid's Go You Chicken Fat Go
The other night I was watching an episode of “American Pickers”. Mike and Frank were checking out a guy who had some old-style soft drink machines where you put in the change, lifted the lid and snaked an ice-cold bottle of soda out—an 8 ounce bottle. The kind where you… Read full post »
Cheap Bastid Makes Zucchini Boats
Have you ever made that motorboat sound with you lips—either pretending to be a motorboat or tickling the tummy of a toddler? Well, that’s not the kind of boats Cheap Bastid is referring to here. I’m taking about zucchini boats.
Thanks to the Tauman Family B… Read full post »
Just a Little Remembrance of Dick Clark
Ed I Tor is way too young to remember Dick Clark. But many of us grew up with him. Gawd, who can forget "American Bandstand".
It spawned a host of other shows--can you think of a few? Like "Hootenanny", "Hullabaloo" and "Lloyd Thaxton" to name a few.
But rat… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Cheap Bastid's Summer Slaw
Just a quick post today. The weather’s getting warmer and sunnier and it’s time to start thinking about warm weather dishes and cookout and picnic food.
One of my favorites is summer slaw. What I love about it is that I can make it in about 5 minutes and toss… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Good Gravy! Just a Country Boy at Heart
My father had a favorite “endearment” for me, his youngest son, when I was a kid. At various times, he’d look at me a say, “you’re just a gravy sopper”. This was especially true when Mom would cook pork chops and there’d be 2 boys and my Dad elbow… Read full post »
The Ultimate Petty Crime--You Can Get Anything You Want
Well, Ed I Tor put out a new "Open Call" for our "petty crimes" in celebration (I think) of this week's Supreme Court decision which leaves it up to law enforcement agencies whether or not to strip search a "petty criminal" prior to locking them up even for a short time… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Cheap Bastid's Salt n Vinegar 'Tater Wedges
Cheap Bastid wasn’t going to post anything today because I haven’t been all that creative lately. But, I feel just a little bit of responsibility for trying to rejuvenate Foodie Tuesday that I decided to go ahead and post a brand new recipe—I just cooked it for the second time… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Cheap Bastid's Homemade Artichoke Pizza
Last week, one of the Foodie Tuesday posters wrote on pizza
crust. I started making my own crust at home a while back and
I concur, it’s easy and inexpensive.
Here’s the thing, if you go to a pizza place or order take out you can spend $15-$20 for a… Read full post »
"Love Thy Neighbor"--a Sunday Quickie
Just thought I'd throw this into the feed today before I check around to see if I can get the ESPNU streaming of the University of North Dakota vs University of Minnesota hockey game today to see who makes the "Frozen Four" next week. Here it is:

Kind of says… Read full post »
OS Million Hoodie March--I'm In Too!
Count me in! I'm as appalled by this as I've ever been appalled by anything. And I live in a neighborhood where it is not uncommon to see young brown men stopped wearing hoodies or oversized t-shirts and just for being brown.
And this is me with my own… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Fun With Jane Smithie's Leftover Pot Roast
Last week, “graciousjanesmithie” did a post on “Insanely Delicious Pot Roast”. No two was about it; this was a tasty, succulent dish. But, what do you do with the leftovers? How do you take this inexpensive dinner and convert it to several more dinners that a… Read full post »
Cheap Bastid's Traditional Irish Soda Bread
Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day and I couldn't resist the temptation to do a little "Show and Tell" today. I cooked the whole traditional dinner of Corned Beef and Cabbage and even baked "Traditional Irish Soda Bread".
Man, the whole thing was good. (One hint on the cabbage--… Read full post »
Open Call: Requiem or Reincarnation for Foodie Tuesday?
OK, so I’ve been mentally threatening myself to write this for the last couple of weeks—ever since I never got a response from Emily Holleman to a PM I sent her on February 28 about the demise of Foodie Tuesday.
In my PM I asked her and her cohorts to “bring… Read full post »
Foodie Tuesday: Who Wants a "Pink Slime" Burger?
Doesn’t that sound good? A big old double-stacker of Pink Slime. Last week, “pink slime” leaped to the top of the standing in Google searches after a series of stories hit the news about 5 million pounds of it being sold to school lunch programs.
All of a sudden people w… Read full post »
Walking Dead Gets Us Talking
Rick killed Shane last night. So did Carl. But we thought that Carl was going to kill Rick for killing Shane. How did Shane get killed twice? Geez, that’s 2 characters killed off in 2 weeks. First Dale and now Shane. I wonder what’s going to happen next.

This is Sports; This Isn't
It’s March. Time for March Madness. The NCAA men’s basketball tournament has always been about my favorite sporting event of the year. The only thing that tops it comes every 4 years and that’s the Olympics.

Part of it is because I spent 15 year… Read full post »
Apathy Man to the Rescue
Yesterday’s San Diego Union Tribune (a newspaper which is sliding inexorably downhill at an ever increasing rate) had an editorial cartoon which really got my attention and made me stop and think.
It seems as though we have been in the most insane political “season” that I can recal… Read full post »
Cheap Bastid Gets a Haircut
I have to confess that I am follicly challenged. Yes folks,
I’m pretty bald and have been for a good long time. I

it.
OK in the late 90’s a couple of times I tried to grow a… Read full post »
Cigarettes, Ultrasounds and Deliberation
This is an election year. I was going to say that it is a
political year, but they all are, aren’t they? And it

on increasingly slanted and… Read full post »
These Guys Take the Damned Cake
Ann Landers once provided her definition of chutzpah in her column. She wrote that chutzpah is the young man pleading for mercy from the court because he is an orphan—when he was being sentenced for murdering his parents.
That’s kind of what’s been going through my… Read full post »
