I seriously did. Just a while ago, I could feel the headache creeping back inside my brain and thought, "Before I have another glass of wine, I'd better take some more Advil." Right? I should've done that. But when I looked at the cluttered granite counter, with baby Tylenol, my grocery list, a calculator, scrunchies, an emery board, two pairs of off the rack reading glasses, my planner opened to next week, a used paper towerl, a dictionary, Vitamin E & Aloe Petroleum Jelly, A & D Ointment, wipies, a box of Kleenex and assorted vitamin bottles and meds...I saw the M&M's with Peanuts! I was side-tracked. I knew in that moment what I needed was the M&M's. I finished them before I could pour another glass of middle of the road Chardonnay.
I fully intended on writing a post tonight, entitled, "OBAMA - IS ON KP DUTY FOR THE REST OF HIS TERM." Swear to God, I was going to write that post. Had I done that, I was going to attest to the fact, that in my opinion (and I believe those two last sentence fragments cancel each other out!), that he, Obama, is, indeed facing serious KP duty for the remainder of his sentence. Oh, I meant to say, his term.
In military terms, KP Duty is defined as, "Kitchen Police or Kitchen Patrol." I prefer the latter. Now, if any of you has ever served in the military and thought that taking on KP Duty meant that you would acquire culinary skills while serving in the military...you were sorely disappointed. I have a good friend who did just that and was medically discharged after one year in the Navy. That is another story.
OK, so, the reason I was going to explain this Obama thing and KP and all is this. Surely some or most of you already know what I am thinking. It is not brain surgery to figure out what is on my mind. I really feel for this guy. This very polished, educated lawyer from Illinois, works his way up quickly through the ranks in Illinois state politics and, is, I believe, as squeaky clean as any politician you'll ever find, then decides to run for KP Duty for the United States of America. Yes, he surely did! If ever in the history of of our country, anyone has ever had to take on the dirty job of cleaning up after so many administrations after administrations...and I do mean BOTH PARTIES here, he took on the task, has rolled up his very white sleeves and is elbow deep in decades of old dishes, filthy, dirty laundry, grit, grime and garbage, as any president has ever seen. Dear Lord, he has signed up for some seriously, disgusting duty, for the sake of our country's future and that of our children and grandchildren.
While driving home from the horse corral tonight, having cleaned up after the crew of 15 and my two grand kids...wiping up a day's worth of manure spiked dirt and dust all over the kitchen table and counters; plates and utensils covered in cabbage, mustard and leftover bits of corn beef (which was quite yummy earlier in the evening), I couldn't help but imagine what Obama is up against. I have become a true sympathizer. I may even be in awe of this man and I voted for McCain, for Christ's sake! I know, what a bimbo! But I'm comin' clean here, so cut me some slack.
I have had a true epiphany this evening. I really feel for the task at hand and the miracles, work, blood , sweat and tears that Obama and we all must overcome to support both our president and our country during this time of massive clean up after so many years of shit layered upon shit, topped with more shit and then some extra shit for good measure. Certainly, our recent Bush made this shit pile worse than anyone could have ever imagined, but his shit just adequately covered up the 8 filthy years of Clinton's shit and Original Bush's shit and procrastination before that. Every president's dance card was so full of shit for the last 30 plus years, I can't even imagine where Obama will begin to clean up this horrific mess.
KP Duty is not pretty. It is not a culinary vacation from being sent to the front lines. It is a daunting and dirty job. It is an assignment only the very strong, brave, dedicated and committed men and women would dare to undertake to serve their country in a time of such daunting clean up. This is far worse than your worst prom clean-up committee nightmare, including the school bathrooms filled with urine mishaps, TP wet and stringy all over the floor, unflushed unmentionables in the toilet and vomit spilled over the edges of the porcelain rims. You know how disgusting that is! This is worse!
So, after coming home to pick up after a day's worth of grandkid's toys strewn around, damp, dirty burp clothes, crumbs from unfinished snacks, emptying the dirty diaper pail, general clean up and such, I looked around to see that I am living my dream in a country that I love, appreciate and could never abandon, no matter how messy the clean up becomes. We are so damn lucky, despite all the challenges that face the majority of Americans. I don't need to mention all those issues that we all know and fear daily. And we certainly hear it on the news, read it in the papers, on the Internet and from our fellow bloggers...it's all there, in our faces, all the time.
I can't imagine what it must feel like to be Obama, at the end of his day, after he tucks in his precious daughters, kisses Michele tenderly, turns off the lights and wonders...what else he will need to add to his list of KP Duties for tomorrow.

I did finish the M&M's but didn't feel the need to fill my wine glass again.
And, lo and behold...my headache is gone.

Your said it best. Obama has to deal with shit, and by shit I refer to people not problems.
Great analogy.

I feel sorry for him, for the mess he has to clean up.
Great post.
I'm totally behind him in his effort to get Health Care reform going. We can't afford to fail on that one.
M&M's are delicious, whether or not they cure anything. =o)
This is a good post. I really liked. It is indeed a good morning.

I often wonder how much better things would be for all of us if the right would support our President like you have so wisely decided to do. I just can't understand that say no to everything regardless of the benefits we all could receive.
But I'm glad the headache went away. I'd have gone for the wine and advil with a nice coffee chaser. M&Ms eh.
Highly rated for open-mindedness, wisdom and living your dream.
I love the piece. I have been working in my head on one about what Obama should have done re health care but I love the metaphor. Into the kitchen with him, yes!!!
As for President Obama on KP duty… I can not think of a better person to be cleaning up the mess of the last eight plus years. He has demonstrated over the first 200 (+/-) days in office, that no job is too big or too small for our Commander-in-Chief. He just rolls up his sleeves, puts his apron on and gets the job done.
I love your thought process and your recommendations for curing the common headaches we all get from time to time.

Chuck! You embellished your avatar name! Love it! Thanks and love the name Chuck!
Scanner - Yes to your comment and I'd say he is whipping his bus boys in the Congress, Senate and House into shape! Now if only he could make a mean Crem Brulee!!!
Thoth - Yes, the shitty people for sure and the issues du merd as well!
Lainey - Thanks so much, sweetie! I love the image of the Tin Woodsman getting his heart! You conjurred that one for me.
Fireeyes24 - Thanks so much.
Unbreakable - Mmmm - just have to have me some of those bad boys from time to time.
Shiral - Thanks! And yes, as much as I believe in Obama's efforts on our behalf, I do believe that M&M's w/peanuts have medicinal effect when taken just at the right time!
Mare - I thought this random post might just put a wide grin on your face! Sorry about the headache! I had one all day yesterday and it was so draining. I recommend Advil, whole heartedly.
Fred - Why thankyou very much. So agree with you that the duties and tasks ahead weigh heavily on all our shoulders. Obama needs all the help and support he can get from all Americans. Surely I do not agree with everything he promotes either, but that would stand for anyone in office.
Greg - Love your enhanced analogy of the Titanic! That's an understatement, isn't it?! If it weren't for my existing voter registration status, I would be NEITHER. I am really over the divisiveness of the two party system. I loathe what it has done to this country and know in my gut, it has been perpetrated on the masses on purpose. It's a cess pool of intrinsic ruination. Now ask me how I really feel!! ;)
Anyway you have a good day... off to work on my poems
I know LOTS of people (even in Chicago!) who voted for McCain. I get it. But the fact that our President IS on KP duty should really not be missed by anyone. I keep wondering where all those people are who think health care is humming along just fine and for god's sake let the insurance companies run it like they are now because they are doing such a super job.
Most days I don't care, but then I read something like this and think---geez I wish the really good stuff--like this---got on the front page---just so more people could see it. Maybe the editors will surprise me---but I doubt it. So I hope somebody puts this somewhere where it can be read by more than jsut those few of us who know where to look for the good stuff.
Great job Cathy!
JK Brady - Thank you and yes to M&M cravings, tho they be seldom. There's Butterfingers and Midnight Milky Ways to be considered as well!
Just Pamela - No, I am not a fan of coconut so I'll stick with my original flavor! Thanks!
Michael Rogers - Well, I hope you know that I am far from the "say no" to everything right wingers, by a long shot! I am a patriot first and love my country, willing to support the man at the helm and pray for clear sailing some day soon.
Athena - Thanks much!
Nerd cred - Can't do coffee chasers at night for fear of sleeplessness!
Thanks for your kind comment, tho I botched my vote.
Lisa Solod Warren - Thanks very much, but no coconut for me!
George - Like your comment points a lot and thanks!
Sweetfeet - Thanks so much...humble bow. Love your avatar!
Trig darlin;! Thanks man, but I might have to beat my fists on your ample chest! Don't get me started on Clinton...heh heh....can't abide by a man who spent an inordinate amount of time adultering and philandering around during his presidency, using our tax dollars, don'tcha know...and fine. He did do some good there with the surplus and all, but he completely avoided the serious implications of our national security, the known brewing terrorism, looming over our fair skies and without getting all worked up over this, suffice it to say, he had 8 years to do much more good than he did. He pissed a lot of time away while his dick was doing the talking. He's a smoothe talking Willie and I don't much cotton to the man. I will accept the good he did, Trig, but that's where it ends.
Roger - Wow, how can I thank you enough for such a glowing comment. Thank you so very much. Well, after my admission of the McCain vote, I'm guessin' hell will freeze over before I get back on the front cover! And I 'm with you on the dire necessity of something being done positively for our health care crisis, but do have to add, that it is still unsettling in ways, to dicipher between the lesser of two evils - insurance companies or government regulation of something so important to all of us. It's a tough one. Pros and cons each way, but we are now forced into a direction that shouldn't have had to happen in the first place. This was long in coming. Thanks again for your appreciated comment of support for me.

Yea, I think Obama has one hell of a dirty, rough job ahead of him, but bless his heart, he's got more spirit and more direction than I can remember of any president since Kennedy
Glad you enjoyed your M&Ms, but somehow chocolate and chardonnay don't seem to mix well. It's probably good that you didn't drink that next glass. Might have been a tad tart
Obama doesn't merely face a dirty kitchen, unfortunately. What he's got on his hands is something on the order of the Augean Stables and I'm afraid he's got little more than a garden hoe to work with at this point.
Thank you for this. And M&Ms go with anything, even Chardonnay! Rated. D
Just sayin'
Good post, Cathy. I need to remind myself that he is handling a lot of problems not of his own making.
As one more politically liberal than you I also think that he is not throwing out enough bad potatoes, cutting some good ones in half and throwing them away, and surrounding himself with too many people who created the need for KP duty in the first place.
On the whole he is doing better than Bush but I find him pretty disappointing regarding a number of issues.
And I voted for him.
Well done post, Cathy.

LadyMiko - There seems to be a common agreement here where M&M's are concerned. We'd better be careful or "they" might tax them heavily!
Roy - Thank you kindly!
Lairderg - Oh no, didn't know there was milk in dark chocolate!
Boomer Bob - Actually, I do like chocolate with chardonnay, especially with the nuts, so you get that nutty sweet combo and the wine blends the best of both elements. I'm trying not to make this a daily habit but folks here are egging me on to keep doing it!
Lonnie - Thanks, buddy! He needs more garden tools and the work force to use them on our behalf!! Much digging out to do!
JRDog - I will think twice about Advil when I have M&M's in the house!
Pamnote - Amen!
YarnOver - Thanks so much and you are sure right about those dirty, dastardly jobs! I applaud those who work those jobs for our better good.
Monte - You are right - wine does disrupt sleep, as does any alcohol consummed to close to bedtime. So I stopped the wine early last night, before writing and noshed on the M&M's instead, forgoing the Advil...no headache today! And we agree on our disappointments over Obama's decisions or lack thereof, in some regards...but that was to be expected, from my political point of view. They all become part of, to a great extent, tof he same club once in office, where all the big boys gather around, give the new boy some inside 411 and many of the campaign promises become yesterdays news. Both teams are guilty of this and so it has been for decades. They are all in too deep. More than we know.
Don't feel bad about voting for McCain. I voted for him too in the 2000 Ohio Presidential Primary in a vain effort to try to prevent Baby Bush from getting the GOP nomination.
Not surprised that Obama ended up with KP duty. After all, he's half black and women and minorities having been cleaning up white men's shit in this country since its inception.
Great post and great comments!

Owl_ - Seems chocolate does the trick. it does have caffein, I believe, so that may be why my headache disappeared. Either way, I enjoyed the chocalate a heck of a lot more than a couple of Advil.
Overworkedtiredandnumb - that is hysterical! Hope he went back and got you one before he crashed!
FrogTownDiva - Loved your comment! Dead on!!!
You should eat M&Ms before every post. :)
Mary Ann - Love your witty comment! Well, if it takes chocolate and chardonnay to do it right, then, that's what I'll do! Thanks!!!
Gypsy Island Girl - Very inciteful comment! How about that?! It did feel good to write this post, free flowing and powered by chocolate and a little chardonnay! Thanks much!
