Little Does She Know

Little does she know

A world in so much turmoil

Precious baby girl.

What will we leave her?

Will she learn to live in peace?

Is it set in stone?

Will prayers be enough

to ensure she will be free?

Or, who will decide?

Peaceful in her sleep

Dreams of warmth, love, her mom's touch.

Little does she know.

I long to know this:

That she will know happiness

and a life of hope.

What will we leave her?

Legacy of fear and pain?

I pray this is wrong.

There is much to do

to ensure security

health and happiness.

The least we can do

to create a better world:

Stand close together.

Unite in this cause.

Shelter our youth from divides

before it's too late.

I look upon her,

in her slumbering beauty;

wonder what will be.

Soft sound of her breath

Surrounds me each day with her,

As I watch her grow.

Like a butterfly

perching on her little nose;

A small miracle.

All this innocence

in a world so uncertain,

Little does she know.

Who will protect these precious little ones in years to come?
Ahh, cum on, Mare! Tell me I spelletd somethin wronge?!
Adorable and beautiful grand baby. Beautiful poem.. Thank you for sharing.
Damn, no misspellings! Very wonderful loving thoughts. You know me, whatever with the prayers. Parents, be proactive. Teach, educate, model, inform, be involved, love you child "as is", forget the helicopter crap...too suffocating...boundaries, boundaries, boundaries.
Beautiful. You've spoken my heart - words I am often too timid to even consider. When my mind starts to go there, I yank it back. I'm a chicken when it comes to considering what the future holds for my precious grandchildren.
The thing that is so hopeful about that is that it is universally beautiful. That is motivation if I have ever seen it.
that's the most beautiful baby I've ever seen!! Lovely pictures and a thoughtful sentiments as well.

great post, Cathy!! Thank you for this.
Beautiful, Cathy, both the photos (and of course the granddaughter) and the post.

It takes generations for societal change, unless there is violent upheaval. We've been slowly making strides, but there is still a fair piece of road to walk.

She may be one of the catalysts that truly brings about "a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity".

Thanks to your granddaughter, those words may once again regain meaning.
Beautifully put. And what a cutie she is!!!
Same worries for me! So much love ,so much worry, so innocent. What a beautiful little girl.
Awwwww! Beautiful pics, Cathy. You must be so proud! Your concerns are bothersome at best. I wish I had some answers for you.
Beautiful poem, and beautiful baby! Such a little sweetie!
Thanks all for your terrific comments.

Pimping for my grand baby is somewhat transparent, even in this poetic attempt to air some concerns over the state of our "nation's character."

I so want this country to give back in the best of ways, to our children and grand children. Will do whatever it takes while there is still one breath left in me, to help in this vital endavor.

These babies are the future. We owe it to them.

She's adorable.

Seeing this baby all snuggly in her blanket with special blue bear blankie in her tiny fingers, close to her mouth and thumb...just makes me go all mushy all over the place. A needed emotion after all the other prickly matters of the day!
It must be hard to look at a baby and think about how the world is an increasingly tense place to live. Still, you can create pockets of peace and happiness. You can't guarantee absolute safety, but your efforts will do a lot for her. I wish all kids had you for a grandma.
Babies bring out those same thoughts for me, except not so poetically. This is beautiful - the poem and that grandchild.
Aww. I'm gonna be a gramma soon, too. (Due on the 15th.) This is sweet. And she is purely adorable.
This is just beautiful, Cathy...I'm thinking of when she's in college and she reads this...xox
Beautiful and precious - your words and this lovely child.
This was beautiful and she is beautiful. I held my grandson this weekend wondering some of the same thoughts. ....with a few tears...here and there....
Some of these wonderful comments are bringing tears to my eyes; a good thing. Sometimes blurry eyes bring deeper vision. A purging of misplaced feelings, the welling of a deeper place within. My warm regards to you all.
jes' lovely, both tot and poetry
Beautiful Cathy. I am impatiently awaiting the birth of my third granddaughter, due five days ago. All the babies in our family take their sweet time to be born.
Children born now are wired differently - they have no need for our materialism and the anxiety it brings. They have "otherwise" modes of knowledge - it's in the DNA. I assure you, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. They're wiser at a much younger age, and more able to cope with change and what's coming than we ever thought of being. You'll see. She'll surprise even someone as aware as you are - and you'll delight in what you see in her in the coming years.
What a precious little angel! She gives me hope that there is still very much that is good in this world. Enjoy her.
She's a beautiful bundle of joy Cath, but your words immediately struck fear into mu heart for her and reinded me on one more of the reasons I chose not to have kids.

But I'm sure it will be fine. My mother always reminded me that each generation has had their own big scare and fears for their kid's and grandkid's futures and we're all still hee and still basically OK.
What a beautiful baby! Little should she know but milk, clean diapers, and a soft, warm, funny world with huge, familiar love slaves.
Lovely, Cathy. Your poem is a prayer for all of of our children.
I try to spend time thanking and congratulating my friends who are parenting for the very brave choice they have made. Generations help - I'm a wacky, fun auntie, which is a great role to have in the lives of the small. I'm glad she's here, and there, and everywhere. I'm a cynic, but I have hope that there will be something to inherit - and she represents that hope.
So beautiful Cathy, the baby and the poetry. I CAN smell the sweetness
The "nation's character" is just words without your grandbaby.
Interweaving the two makes the nations character come alive.
Beautiful!
"Little does she know." Beautiful and well thought out starter.
Beautiful poetic philosophical reality.

I would fill her mind with true knowledge, not bigotry and materialism. I would support that innocence with love of humanity; this is the only way she wins.

Beautifully relevant,
