A SPECIAL DEDICATION TO THE FLOOD VICTIMS AND FAMILIES IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA. THIS SEASONAL FLOOD OF UNFORSEEN PROPORTIONS COMES ONCE EVERY 100 YEARS.
WITH THE CHANGE OF SEASONS COMES UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER; SOMETIMES WITH DEVASTATION, MOST OFTEN WITH A FORCE OF NATURE THAT CAN TAKE OUR BREATH AWAY.
WITH THE DAWNING OF AUTUMN, MY FAVORITE SEASON, I HAVE SLIPPED INTO MY FAVORITE ATTIRE TO ATTEND THIS MAGICAL SHOW PUT ON BY MOTHER NATURE, IN ALL HER SPLENDOR.
Stepping outside my front door this morning I noticed tha sun streaming through my porch flowers, illuminating the rich colors which have endured. An Autumn display surrounds me, this crisp, energetic morning.
Seemingly, summer has morphed into fall, leaving behind some bold reminders that Mother Nature hesitantly moves away from her sultry hot nights, ice cold libations to soothe the endless heat and the skimpy attire that marks her playful season.
The remnants of once plentiful Black-eyed Susans that adorned the yard, are now making room for the falling pine needles that will carpet the landscape before fall's surrender to snow.
Fading oranges with wilting blossoms that spilled over terracotta edges, will soon be gone; put away for another year. Observing these changes in seasonal colors, both saddens me momentarily; delights me in the smells of Autumn that tease my senses. I can feel the chill in the air and the promise of an early freeze. Autumn invigorates me. It energizes my soul and inspires my mind.
The first signs of the changing Aspen leaves, promises more colors of bleeding crimsons, ambers and burnt browns that will paint the new canvas that is Fall. I take it all in. I long for more.
The playful pine cones drop in sequence, alerting me to the hours of yard clean-up to come. Hundreds, maybe more, splatter the terrain in every direction. Reminders that it is time to bring out the sweaters, fleeces, warm cozy blankets, for the cold nights to come.
The White Thorn mingles with the pine trees and taunts us with her sharp needles, competing for space and survival, soon to be blanketed in snow. Spring will come and remind us that this bushy weed must be eliminated before the children return to play in our hillsides.
The squirrels and chipmunks are industriously gathering food, bits of pine cones, making small homes beneath the earth, whitnessed by hundreds of small openings in every direction. The birds serenade as they, too, prepare for the changing season. It is a symphony that one hears, only at this time of the year. Nature's cycle for survival is most apparent to me during this ellusive time of the year. It excites and soothes me.
I return to the front of our cabin to drink in the colors that remain. I am reassured that they will survive another day and several more weeks, perhaps...before the drop in temperature takes them away, leaving only dry, colorless leaves in the once moist, fertile soil.
It will be difficult to say goodbye to our abundant Indian summer that melts into Fall. It will be a sigh of relief, however, to say hello to peaceful, cool evenings, leaving the windows open just enough to allow the musty smell of Autumn leaves to permeate the bedroom air, guaranteeing a restful night's sleep.
No more noisy fans. No more sweaty sheets. No more sun burn and sand in our sneakers. No more air conditioning, mosquitos or yellow jackets on the deck to disrupt our summer barbeques.
...just the sights, smells and feelings of another rebirth which renews my spirit; encourages more creativity and finds gratitude in every falling leaf.
With this season, I am at peace.

Bill Beck - Your comment almost knocked me off my stool laughing! I feel for ya! But I've got the acres of pine needles to deal with.
RonPo1 - You just make me giggle like a school girl!
Cartouche - Thanks for noticing the dedication. Yeah, it was hard to write this post after seeing the photos of the devasting damage to Atlanta and surroundings. Horrific! I feel so lucky to be on high ground today.
I was going to write a post about it and I have some great shots, but OS won't load anything over 2mb's and I don't know how to get around that.
This was GREAT!!!

Although your photos make me feel nostalgic for my grandparents' former house at Lake Arrowhead. I've always associated lakes with summer since my early childhood meant "going to the Lake."

I won't have pics to post until near the end of October, as I want to make sure I get the mountains when they are dressed to the nines. But yeah - it's that time again. I don't want winter to arrive, I've never really cared for sub-zero temps or snow measured in feet. But this is home now, so I guess I'd better suck it up. ;-D
Thumbed.
Beautiful dedication and pictures. You illustrate this season so well with your words Cathy.
I love Fall. I love hiking in the woods, the excitement of crisp mornings, snuggling under fat blankets with the hubby...
We have at least another month before we really get the chill but it's coming...I can feel it!
Beautiful Cathy...you captured it perfectly. Thanks!
We're actually just finally getting summer here in the Bay Area. Autumn is probably a month or so away....
Bill S. - Thanks for ..."colorful leaves...scattered like rejected crayons." That is a perfect description! Love it!
JK Brady - Thanks much for "Sweater weather!" It is so cozy, comfy and just looks wonderful! Nothing like a good sweater!
Gracilou - Thanks for you comment and I am so hoping you and all in Atlanta are OK and that it is receding quickly. I cannot imagine what you are going through and am deeply sorry for this weather anomaly. Scary and devastating. My thoughts and prayers with you.
BuffyW - My hope is that you find an appropriate cuddle mate for the chilly fall nights and yummy warm Autumn days that linger on for a while. Much for you to look forward to and anticipate!
Silkstone - Yeah, hubby has been home in the Bay dealing with the hot weather, watering my flowers like crazy! He's coming to the lake tomorrow! Nice long weekend with the grand kids!
Renaissance Lady - Thanks for sharing this wonderful season with me and so many. I hope it lasts for a while...at least through October and into November.

John Blumenthal- So sorry about all he LA fires of late. That is horrific. A good frend and fire fire helicopter pilot has been there quite a bit the last month plus. Hope it ceases for you real soon.
Serenita Lake - Yes, that is the yard at our Tahoe cabin. We are so blessed to have this getaway place and have it so close to our grand kids! Pure joy!
Ralph - Thanks much and enjoy your time in Tahoe!
