Autumn Is Upon Us

A SPECIAL DEDICATION TO THE FLOOD VICTIMS AND FAMILIES IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA.  THIS SEASONAL FLOOD OF UNFORSEEN PROPORTIONS COMES ONCE EVERY 100 YEARS.

WITH THE CHANGE OF SEASONS COMES UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER; SOMETIMES WITH DEVASTATION, MOST OFTEN WITH A FORCE OF NATURE THAT CAN TAKE OUR BREATH AWAY.

WITH THE DAWNING OF AUTUMN, MY FAVORITE SEASON, I HAVE SLIPPED INTO MY FAVORITE ATTIRE TO ATTEND THIS MAGICAL SHOW PUT ON BY MOTHER NATURE, IN ALL HER SPLENDOR.

photo

Stepping outside my front door this morning I noticed tha sun streaming through my porch flowers, illuminating the rich colors which have endured.  An Autumn display surrounds me, this crisp, energetic morning.

Seemingly, summer has morphed into fall, leaving behind some bold reminders that Mother Nature hesitantly moves away from her sultry hot nights, ice cold libations to soothe the endless heat and the skimpy attire that marks her playful season.

photo

The remnants of once plentiful Black-eyed Susans that adorned the yard, are now making room for the falling pine needles that will carpet the landscape before fall's surrender to snow.

photo

Fading oranges with wilting blossoms that spilled over terracotta edges, will soon be gone; put away for another year.  Observing these changes in seasonal colors, both saddens me momentarily; delights me in the smells of Autumn that tease my senses.  I can feel the chill in the air and the promise of an early freeze.  Autumn invigorates me.  It energizes my soul and inspires my mind.

photo

The first signs of the changing Aspen leaves, promises more colors of bleeding crimsons, ambers and burnt browns that will paint the new canvas that is Fall.  I take it all in.  I long for more.

photo

The playful pine cones drop in sequence, alerting me to the hours of yard clean-up to come.  Hundreds, maybe more, splatter the terrain in every direction.  Reminders that it is time to bring out the sweaters, fleeces, warm cozy blankets, for the cold nights to come.

photo

The White Thorn mingles with the pine trees and taunts us with her sharp needles, competing for space and survival, soon to be blanketed in snow.  Spring will come and remind us that this bushy weed must be eliminated before the children return to play in our hillsides.

The squirrels and chipmunks are industriously gathering food, bits of pine cones, making small homes beneath the earth, whitnessed by hundreds of small openings in every direction.  The birds serenade as they, too, prepare for the changing season.  It is a symphony that one hears, only at this time of the year.  Nature's cycle for survival is most apparent to me during this ellusive time of the year.  It excites and soothes me.

photo

I return to the front of our cabin to drink in the colors that remain.  I am reassured that they will survive another day and several more weeks, perhaps...before the drop in temperature takes them away, leaving only dry, colorless leaves in the once moist, fertile soil.

photo

It will be difficult to say goodbye to our abundant Indian summer that melts into Fall.  It will be a sigh of relief, however, to say hello to peaceful, cool evenings, leaving the windows open just enough to allow the musty smell of Autumn leaves to permeate the bedroom air, guaranteeing a restful night's sleep.

No more noisy fans.  No more sweaty sheets. No more sun burn and sand in our sneakers. No more air conditioning, mosquitos or yellow jackets on the deck to disrupt our summer barbeques.

...just the sights, smells and feelings of another rebirth which renews my spirit; encourages more creativity and finds gratitude in every falling leaf.

With this season, I am at peace.

Get out your rakes and wheel barrels! "Tis the season...!
Autumn never sounded so beautiful...
I wish it felt like fall here, but summer is trying hard to hang on! But its days are surely numbered.
Just beautiful. I Love it up your way.
What gorgeous pictures and observations! Cathy, I love fall/autumn as much as anyone but darnet I despise winter. Guess I'll make the best of it while it's still nice. Thanks!
Wish I could be in Tahoe with you! Beautiful words and pictures for a season I love too...but it always makes me sad. Trying to fight off the sad cuz I'm going beyond the fall to the months with no leaves which means no color and I need color, have to have color, but not leaving Boulder, love Boulder, can't live without Boulder...but the colors going away...I should be more grateful...
Oh look, I'm not alone...trig knows what I'm talking about!
You are not only a romantic but learned in the esthetics of nature. What a beautiful and kind spirit you have. I enjoyed both the lines and what's between them.

Beautiful, Cathy,

Rated.
My favorite season for sure! Although, I have the worlds largest, acorn crapping oak tree.
Cathy, if it's color you need, I'm here ;-)
Great photos....Nice yard...

Beautiful photos and lovely dedication.
That especially goes for you too Mary!....When you need some color just look me up.....;-)
I am a sun person and I love summer, but if I am honest, fall is my favourite season for many of the reasons you have listed. I love the golden quality of the light, the shimmering heat that is not as intense but all the more welcome since it is fleeting, and the feeling of new beginnings. Thank you for this lovely, evocative post.
Thanks to all you Autumn lovers out there! These days just make me a mushy girl!

Trig! Guess you're not into building snowmen! Don't let Bob Eckstein hear that!

Mare - Wish you were here to enjoy this with me, too! Oh, the hikes we could take! Boulder ain't too shabby, either!

Thoth - You get me! Humble thanks for your kind words!

Bill Beck - Your comment almost knocked me off my stool laughing! I feel for ya! But I've got the acres of pine needles to deal with.

RonPo1 - You just make me giggle like a school girl!

Cartouche - Thanks for noticing the dedication. Yeah, it was hard to write this post after seeing the photos of the devasting damage to Atlanta and surroundings. Horrific! I feel so lucky to be on high ground today.
Your love of fall comes through with your words. And those images! Excellent! Fall is also my favorite time of year. It sparks seven full months of heavenly weather and the end to oppressive heat and humidity. Gah. I don't miss summer, but it is what it is.
I was going to write a post about it and I have some great shots, but OS won't load anything over 2mb's and I don't know how to get around that.

This was GREAT!!!
Beautiful pictures, beautiful words, Kathy, but ya know, I've never been able to thrive on the autumn palette. I must be cold-blooded and have the need to curl up around myself,I still can appreciate a good post when I see it.

Magical photography! And beautiful observations to match.
I love this post, even though I am in a funk because i can't enjoy anything due to FEAR OF WINTER (like Trig.). And I live in NEW ENGLAND, and it's going to be amazing foliage, so thank you for reminding me to relax and enjoy....
I'll be doing one or two photo posts once the leaves get going...thanks for the inspiration.
I always like the colors of fall. In the past I have not enjoyed it much because it signals the end of the "riding season." Although, truth be told, I ride just a bit year round. But now, with my med problems I cannot ride much in the summer because of the heat. So now I really look forward to the temps as they drop into the 60s and 50s and I can ride for a couple of hours without fear of flaring.

This is a well done post, Cathy.

Monte
I LOVE your place and I can smell that smell that those mountains have in the morning................so nice.
I am so ready for fall and the 90 plus degrees to be gone. Lovely how you wrote about it!

I love fall/autumn it is my favorite time of the year, with all the changes in colors on the trees. Loved the pictures..
Cathy - this is wonderful. I love autumn and am planning a trip to see the east coast fall foliage in all its glory. So many changes taking place this season. Thank you for the beautiful pictures and lovelier words. (Nice pots, by the way - I'm envious!) Have a wonderful autumn in Tahoe - love that place!
Michael Rogers - Thanks, Michael! Please do your post, too!!

junk 1 - Thanks much and no worries! Wrapping or curling up with one's self is good, no matter the season! It sounds cozy, regardless!

Emma Peel - Your comment was even more evocative of this enchanting season! Thanks very much!

Unbreakable - Lovely comment! Thanks!

Aim - Thanks much and I so look forward to your posts as well. You can't beat a New England Fall and glorious changing of colors.

Monte - Thanks! And so glad to know that you are still getting those vital rides in this fall! Be safe and enjoy the beauty of this special time of the year.

Lunchlady 2 - Thank you for a wonderful comment and twice is nice!

KOB and Fireeyes24 - Thanks for coming by and smelling the season with me!
Outside Myself - Thanks so much for your lovely comment. No need to envy the pots/planters because they are all resin and light as a feather!
Fall.. bring it on! I've had it with heat waves! Sleeping without the fan running: good. Sleeping with two nice companionable kitties on my bed: better. Being able to wear more than a tiny portion of my wardrobe: best.

Although your photos make me feel nostalgic for my grandparents' former house at Lake Arrowhead. I've always associated lakes with summer since my early childhood meant "going to the Lake."

OK, so now I actually love them more. :-)
We are just beginning to see color in the mountains here. There are lots of colorful leaves scattered about like rejected crayons, but they are mostly from trees that are suffering from nature's version of AD/HD, I think. Most of the trees know it is time to start shedding that summer wardrobe of verdant green.

I won't have pics to post until near the end of October, as I want to make sure I get the mountains when they are dressed to the nines. But yeah - it's that time again. I don't want winter to arrive, I've never really cared for sub-zero temps or snow measured in feet. But this is home now, so I guess I'd better suck it up. ;-D

Thumbed.
I too love what I call sweater season. There is something about wool and tweed and falling leaves that I find peace in as well.
Beautiful dedication and pictures. You illustrate this season so well with your words Cathy.
Awww...lovely. My best friend experienced her first snow in Estes Park just a couple of days ago! We were drowning here in Atlanta and the snow plows were driving up her street!

I love Fall. I love hiking in the woods, the excitement of crisp mornings, snuggling under fat blankets with the hubby...

We have at least another month before we really get the chill but it's coming...I can feel it!
This fall will seem especially full of firsts for me, yet I am waiting expectantly.

Beautiful Cathy...you captured it perfectly. Thanks!
very nice! I love autumn, too.

We're actually just finally getting summer here in the Bay Area. Autumn is probably a month or so away....
Ahhh. Autumn is my favorite time of month. Thank you.
Shiral - "Going to the lake" - love this phrase. For me, it is a year round delight! And Autumn here is stunning. Rejuvenating. Thanks for your comment.

Bill S. - Thanks for ..."colorful leaves...scattered like rejected crayons." That is a perfect description! Love it!

JK Brady - Thanks much for "Sweater weather!" It is so cozy, comfy and just looks wonderful! Nothing like a good sweater!

Gracilou - Thanks for you comment and I am so hoping you and all in Atlanta are OK and that it is receding quickly. I cannot imagine what you are going through and am deeply sorry for this weather anomaly. Scary and devastating. My thoughts and prayers with you.

BuffyW - My hope is that you find an appropriate cuddle mate for the chilly fall nights and yummy warm Autumn days that linger on for a while. Much for you to look forward to and anticipate!

Silkstone - Yeah, hubby has been home in the Bay dealing with the hot weather, watering my flowers like crazy! He's coming to the lake tomorrow! Nice long weekend with the grand kids!

Renaissance Lady - Thanks for sharing this wonderful season with me and so many. I hope it lasts for a while...at least through October and into November.
Fantastic pictures and a great post. Summer is hanging on up here... 90 today... but fall is in the air. (Rated)
God, I wish we had autumn in LA. Today we have fires and Santa Anas and it loks like Hell. Your pictures remind me of Lake Arrowhead. Makes me want to go there.

R
That's beautiful. It's your yard? How divine.
Roger - Thanks very much, buddy. The heat is all over the place this weekend. Record heat in the mountains, too! Stay cool!

John Blumenthal- So sorry about all he LA fires of late. That is horrific. A good frend and fire fire helicopter pilot has been there quite a bit the last month plus. Hope it ceases for you real soon.

Serenita Lake - Yes, that is the yard at our Tahoe cabin. We are so blessed to have this getaway place and have it so close to our grand kids! Pure joy!
Just re-reading your post, Cathy. Beautiful images and thoughts.
I can smell the pines and rotting leaves!!!! Rated
Smithery - Thank you, kindly!

Ralph - Thanks much and enjoy your time in Tahoe!
Me too on the "with this season I am at peace." Was so happy to awaken to sunshine AND the cool of fall.
Just what I needed this morning. Loverly!
