First Snowfall in California - Photo Commentary

Rate: 26 Flag

photo

An unexpected snowfall delights our Corgi, Nick, who was out rolling around in the fluffy white stuff.

photo

The small Aspens in the foreground were slumped over in the snow's unannounced appearance overnight.

photo

From early morning upon awaking, we have seen 3" grow to 6" very quickly.

photo

Barely a week ago, I did an Autumn post with vibrant fall colors in all their potted glory.  Now, the Petunias have surrendered to the early arrival of our first winter freeze.

photo

Boy, we sure didn't see this coming!

photo

The Mallard wind chimes that usually find a dry spot before the snow.

photo

Aspens that have barely expsosed their Autumn colors now shrouded in snow.

photo

Hot tub with lamp reflection taken through picture window.

photo

I knew I should have put alway all the pool and sand toys yesterday!

photo

My poor Petunias that were thriving so well into the fall...gone now.

photo

So much for frost on the pumpkin!

photo

Lone pumpkin on front steps in winter shock.

photo

The Red Fern ladden with heavy snow is hanging in sorrow at it's shortened life in the warm Autumn days gone too soon.

photo

The deck umbrella took a beating when minutes after this photo, it fell forward, table toppling and broke.  Crazy wintry morning!

photo

Seeing the last remnants of Autumn as the Aspens stand tall and proud between the snow covered pines.

photo

Husband thinking he might be "snowed in" and skip the slow drive over the mountain...

So much for the forecast:  "Slight chance of rain with possible snow above 7,500 feet in the higher mountain elevations.  Lake level is at 6,200 feet.

We got nailed!

The sun just came out!  Time for Remos Fizzes in the hot tub!

Anyone game for making naked snow angels?!?
Snow? What is snow? Nice pix.
Great pics, Cathy, although I don't envy you the snow. We generally get our first snow of the season in the Wisconsin northwoods this weekend, holding out for it not to come yet. Enjoy!
OMG already? here it is still blazing hot that make two showers a day mandatory! the pictures are lovely but I can almost feel the damp here and the one taken throuhg the picture window of the tub is my fav picture. pumpkins do not freeze then? whats tht hot tub meant for?
Wow, you really got some weather! And I was complaining about cold temps. Maybe I should go appreciate my garden before that white stuff heads this way.
Oh no... too depressing. I'm going to go hide under a pile of pillows. Snow is the "S" word in my house... even though I live in New Hamster.
Being in Saudi I absolutely love this post. I'm going home for Christmas so hopefully I'll see some snow then.
WOW! Love the shots of the trees covered in snow.
As for naked snow angels? Sure, why not!
:-)
This is early! It's cool right here in Sacramento, which is a giant heat sink, one of the hottest places in the country.

Your photos are exquisite, and it must be nice to have TWO gorgeous areas to live in!

Do you think that we're in for a cold, early winter?
Autum: Don't blink, you might miss it!

It would be nice to have a wet winter though. We sure need it.
Great pictures Cathy! That's one cute corgi. Glad the Husband didn't wait much longer to climb that mountain.

Wow! I only got one taker for making "nakie" snow angels! Geezzz!

Oh well, half of it has melted already!!!

John - No got snow?!?
Kathy- Wisconsin?! Oh, honey, you got some serious snow coming!
Rolling - Wondering where you live that it is so hot! Yeah, I suppose the pumpkins will freeze but they will still look good for a few months! Not sure how to answer your hot tub question. Hmmm.
Noisy Nora - Really bummed this snow came so early and would have loved to see my garden last another month.
C.K. - You are funny! I could have hidden under my pillows this morning but the first snow is like Xmas morning for me! I jumped out of bed announcing to my surprised husband that there are photo ops to be had! He tolerates me.
GJI Penguin - So, where is home for you again?
Spotted_Mind - You are my heroe and the only taker for making naked snow angels! You rock!
Zumalicious - Oh, you're in Sac! I heard from a sister that it is nice there today. She's in shorts and sandals! Yes, hearing it will be an early, wet winter. And, yes, very lucky to go back and forth between the Bay and the Mountains. Gratitude, daily.
Shiral - So right! Hubby would not have hiked this weekend! Yes, we sure do need the precipitation, whether rain or snow. Lots!
Gah!!! Those pictures sure are pretty. By contrast, We had our first cold front finally reach my area. The temperature dipped below 70 for the first time since early May. Yes, that includes night time temperatures, too! This week forecast highs of at least 90 everyday. Ugh. But at least the air is drier. What a difference that makes. Come on Winter!!!
Gorgeous! I think my brother is a bit too low on the Kingsbury Grade to have seen any of this...wonderful post C! xo
That´s a lot of snow, how spectacular! And I would really, definitely, absolutely like to live surrounded by trees as you do... sigh...
Rated, kisses,
Marcela
Oh I love snow. Glad we will have fall a bit longer though because it's my favorite season. Loved the pumpkin photos.
Michael Rogers - Man, do you live in a hot zone! It's snowing like crazy here in Tahoe and we had to shut down the irrigation system and pull the flower pots closer to the house for the winter. This came too early!
Barry - Yeah, I believe your brother is on the Nevada side where likely they got only rain except in the higher elevations where the mountain tops are dusted with perdy new white stuff!
Marcela - The trees here are magical...theraputic. I seriously do have tree adiction and need all the mountain therapy I can get!
JRDOG - I love snow too, when it's fresh and new! Later on, it's just annoying, dirty and messy. Miss fall. This isn't fair. And I just got the pumpkins! Hope they make through this cold spell!
Beautiful pics - on the one hand, the snow is gorgeous, and on the other, well, it's pretty cold!
I made a semi-naked Mud-Angel at ACL while listening to Dr. Dog...my oh my.....Rated & Cheers!
The first few days of October is too soon for snow! Here on the Olympic Peninsula it's been getting chilly at night (40s) but bright and sunny in the day, this week in the 70s! The flowers are blooming their hearts out and I am hoping the roses will keep on blooming through the month. I've never seen so many apples, pears and plums, they're everywhere!
JC- Terrific photos! but...brrrrrrrrrrrrr! Makes me brace for another Midwest, hard winter... my 61st. Must be something redeeming about them. I'm still here. ;0)

I'm up for Remos Fizzes and a soak, then making naked snow angels and then let's repeat it all!. I like the pics--but then I always like snow in pictures better than in reality.
Amazing first snowfall, and what a lot you got! Glad, though, that it will soon melt so you can get back to Fall!

A little early Christmas magic......so enjoy the brief encounter while you can.
This pleasant melancholy gets me; it is my thing. I copied all pictures.

Very beautiful, Cathy.

I love your area anyway, but the first snow is really something. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Owl - Hi! Yah, it's been pretty cold, yah! Dang furnace on now and also the gas fire place and my heavy fleece, blankie on my lap! Real cute visual!
Texas Bubba - "Semi naked mud angel..." OK, that works!
Ablonde - So many flowers and fruit! That's mouth watering and I want my Autumn back!!!
Mothership - Thanks! I can't complain. Midwest winters are the bear! I remember snow days and not being able to open the front door with snow up to the roof! But I loved those years in Illinois.
Mypsyche - You're on!!!
Debbs4 - So hope you are right! Want my warm Autumn and Indian summer back. Now!
JD - Very nice way of looking at this early intruder. Hope it's brief.
Thoth - Glad you liked the snowy pics! I want it to melt! Not ready for winter! Want my warm Indian summer days, the windows open and no furnace clicking on and off 24/7! OK, the snow is beautiful.
Buffy W - You're welcome. It was too pretty not to share, but now it can melt and go away. Not into it and need my favorite season to last more than 2 weeks!
Damn you, woman, I wasn't ready to SEE this either!!!

Still, those are some great shots, Cathy. I see that nature isn't watching the local news near you either. We don't have snow yet, but they called for rain yesterday and all we got was a bit of a sprinkle (not that I'm COMPLAINING, 'cause I'm not!).

*SIGH* Seasons change. It's been weird the last ten years, hasn't it?
The kiddie pool covered with snow is especially melancholy. Lovely photos!
Oh, I'm so not ready for this winter. ugh.
Beautiful pictures...but definitly not ready
Hey, I'm not ready for this either, but I went out in my jammies to take these cool photos for ya'll! It's sunny here today but burrrrr coldie!!
The pictures are beautiful and Nick is having so much fun in the snow. But I'm still grumpy from a late April snowstorm and stubbornly refusing to get excited about snow. Geez...early October...but the skiers will be happy.
