"Where I'm From" - Open Call for Trudge164

Rate: 21 Flag

I am from...

Mom and Dad - PV

I am from two parents who loved me and loved each other dearly.  I am surrounded by the cherished memories, family photos in original frames, the old piano a bit out of tune but a reminder of the music that filled our home always.

I am from an old white house built on a hill with a round black and white TV in the living room, tasseled green satin sofa and a large picture window that looked out on my baby girl life.

I am from the tree house my father built for me where I made 'poison berry pies', spied on the neighbors, kept my younger siblings away from my perch and scanned the large back yard which framed my days of childhood.

I am from the midwestern sense of humor garnished by daily phone calls between my father and uncle, where laugh out loud jokes were the best medicine. From the lilt in my mother's laughter as she teared up with my father over shared secrets and an unmatched marital bond.

I am from starting from scratch, a strong work ethic, faith in God, life and myself, love of family bonds, "peace at all cost" and from  knowing I was merely "plain but had a great personality."  And, "Into each life some rain must fall."

I am from 'my mom-and-dad-mold' from which I had to carefully remove my skin and soul and remain in one piece.

I am from rainy days, galoshes and slickers, preferring to play outside with the boys to playing with dolls and neighborhood girls in Seattle. Living on an island (Mercer Island) was a great playground for a tomboy till the age of ten. Sunday nights with Ed Sullivan and Lawrence Welk, limited TV, unlimited outdoor play and for gosh sakes, sharing everything I had with my 6 younger siblings.

I'm from Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Greenwich, Queens (Stew Village), Northern Jersey and Lake Tahoe, California.  The Mayflower to Michigan meets Grand Forks, Washington D.C. to Seattle, completing the first of many circles to come.

From my father whose heritage rang in seven signers of The Mayflower Compact, all men, who came to America to find a better life, a release from the Church of England and the rule of a monarchy.  Mom, a poor Irish immigrant boasts  lineage from King Brian Boru of Ireland and therefore crowned her daughters the Irish Princesses with "Blue Blood," complete with a dowry of Irish Lasagna and German Pot Roast fit for King Henry VIII, from whence we came?

I'm from a melting pot of German-Irish-British recipes, stories passed on from fathers to sons, depression babies, a daily dose of "We had to put cardboard in our shoes to cover the holes in our soles so be grateful for what you have" mantra, mixed with "Be thankful for not being a poor starving child from Biafra." And, daily Rosaries during Lent.  Lest we forget the annual singing of Christmas Carols in our neighborhood, led by our proud father.

I'm from West to East and everywhere in between, from all of the above and much, much more...then and now.

For all of it, I am filled with gratitude and blessings.

Goes quietly...bump into the nocturnal feed of the sleep deprived and restless minds.
"...unlimited outdoor play and for gosh sakes, sharing everything I had with my 6 younger siblings." This is the only time I sense a giggle in the flow and it's perfectly placed.
Wonderful post. Such a grand family. It is fine to see where your strength and skill originate. Thank you for sharing.
Rated.
What a great glimpse into where you are from. Great photos.
Thank you for sharing your sweet self with all of us! This explains alot.
Cathy this is genuinely very interesting. Ummm my people didn't come over on the Mayflower too busy running from Cossacks :) r.
Thanks for PMing me.. I would have missed this other wise when things are posted that go bump in the night..:)

Living on an island (Mercer Island) was a great playground for a tomboy
My grandparents lived on Mercer Island and we went there for a few summers. Used to hit the DQ singing Four Seasons songs..:)
This was lovely..the parents picture..priceless. So nice to know such a lovely person as you are. Really enjoy. Gottta put garden to bed..glad I stopped.
Loved this post. Smiled at how it would read differently if I were writing it and each one of our five other siblings. Many similarities and many differences. All that make up a wonderful family. We lost Mom and Dad way too soon and for that, I'm still sad but thrilled I have you. Thanks for this wonderful read.
heidebeth - Thanks for finding the humor and coming by!

Cindy - Lovely comment, thanks!

Mary - Glad you liked this one and would love to see your take on this exercise! Miss you!
Awwww, yeah . . . what an excellent mash-up of origin! I love it.
so beautiful in every way. r
This was wonderful, Cathy.
You are a wonderful girl who comes from wonderful parents and wonderful places. WONDERFUL. R
Beautiful post, cathy. I am in awe of you & your family...
Owl - Yes, just a mish mash of a mut with some dubious blood lines. Them Brits got with the Native American women and gave us our angular bone structure and eye shape, some psychic historian told me some years back. Whatever...

Bernadine - Thank you so much!

Trilogy - Lovely of you to say so!

Sheila - Well...not always so wonderful but sure do appreciate the shot in the arm. Never hurts like it did when I was a kid getting those horrid polio shots!
So what you are really saying is that you are a blue-blooded mutt with a pronounced sense of place and a case of wanderlust?
Fun read Cathy.
So beautiful, strong, cherished.
Your mom and dad are a striking couple. When I compare your essay to some of the others who come from dysfunctional family of origins and empty shell marriages, it becomes even more refreshing. You were blessed...and very fortunate to have such a rich familial history.
Caroline marie - Thank you and do know that our family had its many quirks as well.

Tim4change - Yep! That pretty much sums it up! Th!

Connie - Thanks, hun! We need to meet!

Cognitive Dissonance - What a wonderful comment and compliment to my clan. I do cherish them, with all our warts and scars...as we do have them as well. Thank you!
What a captivating slideshow of memories, Cathy. You make me feel achy for the simple delights of childhood. xoxo
This was a pure delight to read, you are from good stock as they say.
How marvelous, all that is wrapped up in you. Thank you.
