A winter walk to a hidden lake
A looming deadline to turn in our tax planner to our accountant, prevented us from frolicking with the grand kids on this sunny, springlike winter day.
No stranger to the frustrations and tedium of tax preparation, we hit the files, receipts in piles, extra strong coffee nearby and began our day, pencils poised...calculator noise; a delayed breakfast. It had to be done.
Knowing the grand kids dearly desired to spend the day at grandma and grandpa's, sledding down our big backyard hill, we had to defer to mom and dad to carve out the much needed time to face the music of the IRS.
Done. Faxed. Relaxed. Got to walk with the dog this afternoon and even take a post tax-prep nap. Blankets pulled tight to our chins, fire flickering in the corner stove, puppy curled in a tight circle, light snoring from somewhere, is how we spent the afternoon.
No TV, no computers, no video games, no DS, no distractions but the sounds of the wind rushing through the pines, the trickling of the lake breeze; the sound of a skipping stone or stick, whichever was at hand. Kids at play near a home that embraces nature games, the great outdoors, the smells of the earthy mountain moss and the sounds of laughter.
No traffic, no congestion, no smog, fog or noxious fumes; no rumble.
Running free, gathering speed, a magic stick to poke and swing in the sunlight. Shadows of childhood, unencumbered by boredom and useless passtimes without the scent of fresh air. No boundaries in the God given spaces and places where imagination sparks the flames of fun.
Sister following, close behind, picking up speed; peddles faster to the lake, no tripping in the weeds left by winter's freeze. Whether for boys or for girls, there is no difference in this natural paradise, where all play the same while making up each game, forever free.

The teachings and treasures of a child's spirit, are the most precious lessons to me.
Thank you Graydon and Sydney,
and the parents who blessed you with life.
A life that defines the very important things,
And the daily reminders of love, laughter and playtime in Earth's most precious play ground.
