Phenomenal Choice by Obama for Energy Secretary

Rate: 9 Flag

Numerous sources indicate that Obama has chosen Steven Chu, a nobel winning physicist, to be his Secretary of Energy. This choice is arguably the best choice yet in a string of superb cabinet picks.

Not an industry insider, not a fellow politician, not a celebrity, but a true scientist. Its not just a demonstration that Obama is serious about creating energy solutions, this is a win for all of us who are sick and tired of a president who has treated science like a foreign language. Its safe to think in the White House again.

Chu is a perfect start to Obama's ambitious plans for alternative energy development, and should be an inspiring choice for those of us who see our country's future closely tied to our energy economy.

In my opinion, all his picks so far indicate that he is serious about everything. Say hello to "thinking"...it's been a long time absent.
"Its safe to think in the White House again."

And diehard folks are saying that this isn't a revolution...
The "diehard folks" seem to have forgotten that their candidate won the Presidency... not just a Punditry. If they had their way, then Obama would be proving all the Republican alarmists and fear-mongers correct with radical appointments to the cabinet.

I roll my eyes when people criticize Obama for being too practical "instead" of Liberal. Practicalism IS Liberalism!
My only hope is that he'll be a good administrator. There is a big risk whenever one does something like this that you'll end up with someone who will put people off to the entire class of people like that if anything gets screwed up.
"Safe to think in the White House again." I believe Bush's failings can all be attributed to his anti-intellectualism, his willful ignorance. Don't bother me with the facts, I've already made up my mind. Thanks for highlighting a move which may have more long-term benefits than his other picks.
Thanks for posting this--I wanted to write about it also. I am very excited that an actual scientist, a physicist with strong global warming research credentials, will be heading up the Department of Energy. It shows Obama really is serious about changing government and attacking climate change.
I am really excited about this, also. It is not like Nobel Laureates grow on trees. He's in research like KP notes, he is genius, he is interested in turning the world green. I congratulate the President Elect but I really congratulate Chu. He would make more money on the outside, he would not be attacked politically. This is another example of public service. All of these talented and bright people who are attracted by Obama's new perspective. I am full of hope for the first time in many decades and I think a lot of other people are too.
We should not take a mild approach to combating anti-intellectualism. It reached a high point in this country under Bush, peaking in the presidential election. And now of course, it is embodied primarily by Sarah Palin.

Anti-Intellectualism is nearly as corrosive a force as racism, nativism, or any other such bigotry that denies a society a means to betterment. It should be treated as such.
Actually, his Nobel comes for some more obscure stuff (slowing down atoms using lasers^%*?), but his current position is hard as nails, administrative and goal-oriented. He's Perfect!

The other day, we're driving down the road (my charges are hormonal, crazyinsane tweeners) and, apropos of nothing, I swear, I say, "Should stupid people be allowed to reproduce?" And the won't let me forget it. They say I'm intolerant. They say I'm biased. I say... um, yeah, but....
