The Maltese Cross: symbol the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America

(Chartered by Congress)

Excerpt from the preamble to the United States Constitution:

" ..to Insure Domestic Tranquility... To Protect <*in this specific case: non-violently> the *Constitution of the United States <*The Guardian Goddess: Columbia >, from all Her Enemies, Whomsoever : be they Foreign or Domestic."

More will be said of the Cross of Malta near the close of this introduction.   May it suffice for the moment to clarify that this frequently unrecognized and misunderstood symbol - and a number of variations of it (Re: Carl Jung & Symbology) - is beyond the age of a millennium, while it was adopted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States in 1899.

Noteworthy that the majority of recently polled adult American Citizens alternately do not know the meaning of the symbol of the Maltese Cross. Whereas, a minority of those who do, frequently associate it with the popular icon of a 'moving van & trucking company', or the Fascist Reich of W. W. II.

About 4% of polled persons called it the 'surfers cross' and offer no more information of their interpretation of it...

In more western portions of the United States, the abbreviated initials of 'V.F.W.' are of mis-read as 'U.F.W', and construed as being the abbreviation for 'United Farm Workers'.

It is unfortunate that the military Veterans of Foreign Wars and their symbol - their very existence as a Congressionally Chartered paramilitary organization is 'confused' as meaning Dictatorship & Facism - the V.F.W. having, by definition, sacrificed more than any other American veterans organization.

In late 1984; well into 1985, VFW POST 5888, stationed in the downtown Memorial Bldg. of Santa Cruz, California, was brought to international attention as the first  Congressionally Chartered VFW post (in a century of that   organization's existence) to diametrically oppose the standing policy of any United States President.

THE IRONY OF THE IRON CROSS

A large portion of polled persons associate the symbol of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.) of the United States, with 'the Fascist-Nazi Iron Cross and/or swastika'. The irony here being, of course, that the the so called 'Iron Cross' of Fascist Germay symbolized the exact opposite of the 'Maltese Cross', or, 'Cross of Malta' as a collectively allied European and American  symbol of combative warfare and military combat zones or expeditions, far preceding the foreboding Nazi icon it seems most recently remembered as and associated with.

........................................................
(May it be kept in mind that in this era, although the VFW ranks were - and still are - dwindling , there are  10,000 posts in the United States, worth an estimated thirty billion dollars - with a corroborately influential - formerly two million, now approximately one million -  Memberships (amounting to a formidable 'political bloc') to be won over as votes for any major political office, on a national scale and minor political offices on whatever more localized, State, District, County and Municipal political talleys. Notably, many individuals holding public office, as well as law enforcement officers and judiciary officials are also VFW members, and/or former military men and women - and or partisans -  who are fully aware of unjust social stigmas, too often projected upon and borne by U.S. and Allied veterans of all ranks, duties and National Ensigns.)
.....................................................
VFW - Bill Motto - Post 5888's Destiny...
This was before, during and after Lt. Col. Oliver North, under oath, perjured himself repeatedly in a series of congressional hearings, in what became world renowned as the "iran Contra' imbroglio. or more colloquially as 'Ollie-Gate' - gathering its sobriquet from the Nixon Watergate debacle.
In the subjected era, the presidential office was held by Ronald ("I am a Contra') Reagan, along with Vice President George Bush, who supported - the status quo defending - 'neo dictatorial Contra' - opposition to the 'revolutionary Sandanista rebels (a popular army of severely oppressed people - not unlike American revolutionaries in the War for Independence: only, much worse.)'.

The central issue proved Lt. Col. North as an active liaison; trading massive quantities of Central American cocaine and weapons trafficked at large -  particularly, trans-oceanically - between, in and around El Salvador and Tehran.
The  judicial hearing and investigative proceedings repeatedly  proved Col. North guilty, also clearly revealing him as functionally 'above the law' ('following orders' from a conspicuously unidentified - ineffectively pursued - domestic American 'upper echelon'). The ex post facto resolutions of the solemnly relavant Nurenburg Trials were not actively engaged or issued; though Lt. Col. North was found patently guilty of a series of grievous crimes, including actions tantamount to treason: under special circumstances.
Defense tactics included purportations of Lt. Col. North as exempt from massive drug & weapons trafficking charges on the premeses of 'deep cover', cogent to investigative procedures. He was monikered  from 'scape-goat' and 'hero' to 'fall guy' (the latter of which he most certainly was; criminally shielded by constitutional law breaking,  so called 'drug-war' and justice mocking. massive and infrastructurally installed rogue U.S. government safety net)...
While clear thinking Americans witnessed yet another - severely dog-eared, chronically familiar - example of rogue elements at key stations of American government, seeing to it that justice was industriously 'slipped through the cracks' ...
Reverently if blandly alluded to as though this - often contrived - compromise of  legal responsibility and morality were a universal law of gravitation, endorsed by Sir Isaac Newton, or Clarence Darrow.
Lt. Col. - ('Drugs Czar U.S.') - North was delivered from justice: with impunity. Numerous perjury and other felony convictions were expunged from his record. by unrevealed 'higher authority.'  Uncompromising - sealed evidentiary - issues of alleged 'national security' were invoked.
Citizen North went on to run for governorship of the state of Virginia; although he did not prevail in this All American tradition of the (would be) democratic process, the point that no convicted felon may run for or hold public office was yet once again, emphatically thrust through the (expunged?) National Colors. along with the defiled and groped body politic of the Guardian American Goddess, Columbia and that of her likewise desecrated younger sister, Liberty (the physical abuse of women and children by adult men, including rape, being the fastest growing - least recognized - violent 'domestic' crime  in the United States; Re: AGAINST OUR WILL, by Susan Brownmiller, THE UNDECLARED WAR AGAINST AMERICAN WOMEN: Susan Faludi).
Refer, the colloquial military and corporate state hyperbole, alluding to sealed containers of 'whoopaz', labeled 'Don't open this', that remained criminally unopened; whereas, converse containers were unsealed and revealed when the pretentious advantage of doing so favored the surfeit defense.
..................................
It was within and around this chronological window that Post 5888 made public its *'Nicaraguan Resolution' - in protest to U.S. Military - pro 'Contra' - intervention in Central America, *authored by Post Member, Dean Metcalf (USMC, Vietnam).
The entire Post, forthwith came under grimly familiar socio-political Promethean fire from numerous hostile quarters, including VFW National, Wa. D.C., and qualified representatives of the 'media' and 'public polls'. Yet, there was likewise, a telling amount of favorable  response in support of Post 5888 from the public sector, and stations, chairs & benches of political office: in hundreds of overground mailed enveloped letters, as well as sympathetic small and large press & 'electronic media'.

"Its like being back in the bush  (Vietnam; in the field with the 'grunts') - we can't be sure who's friend or foe. It was that way 'in country' (Vietnam). It was that way when we returned. But now it's ten years later, and I'll be damned if it isn't still that way."

"If anything has been learned from all this, its a frightening, divided lesson. Perhaps the biggest tragedy of the Nam was, and still appears to be, we - not myself or my Comrades or our families and friends, but the rest of 'them' - haven't learned from it...
"The New Generation is remarkably naive-about and pliant-to what amounts to American Imperialism, by any other name.  It may - all too soon - happen again."

Ain't no need to wonder why! Whoopee! We're all gonna die! Be the first one on yer block, to have yer boy sent home in a box!"

(Just under 60,000 K.I.A. boxes and about ten years later...)
5888 membership collectively endured scathing broadsides from Nationally sponsored VFW magazines and dominant right wing newspapers, ranging from ambitiously asserted threats to revoke the 5888 Charter  (which was eventually if temporarily carried out),  and/or impose a federal injunction on their right to publicly and truthfully express themselves - to implied and direct threats of physical violence against collective and individual membership(s). All of whom, to one degree or another, out of love of country and patriotic duty to and service for the Constitution of the United States, had placed their socio-political credibility, if not their doubly jeopardized mortality, in harm's way.

VETERANS FAST FOR LIFE

"There comes a time when we must refuse to answer to our leaders if we are also to answer to our conscience."

- Sir Hartley Shawcross, the Nuremburg Trials, 1946

Such patriotic fortitude was most dramatically (stoically and modestly) demonstrated by *individual 5888 Post memberships who personally and publicly protested, via peaceful opposition against U.S. government approval of and military support for oppressors of the People of Central America, often at their own expense and certainly their personal peril.  Ranging from travel to, surveillance of and communication with residents and indigenous natives of oppressed areas of Central America. Including an endemically unstable, deteriorating Mexican government, displaced by martial law , especially the Mexican province of Guatemala and Central America's El Salvador and Nicaragua...
Peaceful North American protests included a 1 September, 1986 commenced life threatening 'water -only' nutritional fast of over three weeks duration,, on the steps of the United States Capitol building; carried out by passively protesting veterans...
 *Namely - in alphabetical order:
Vet, Post 5888 member, A.J. Liteky, certified recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor - the nation's highest merit for conspicuous gallantry, above & beyond any call of duty.
Vietnam vet: LITEKY, ANGELO J.
Rank and organization: Chaplain (Capt.), U.S. Army, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 199th Infantry Brigade. place and date: Near Phuoc-Lac, Bien Hoa province, Republic of Vietnam, 6 December 1967 . Entered service at: Fort Hamilton, N.Y. Born: 14 February 1931, Washington, D.C. Citation: Chaplain Liteky distinguished himself by exceptional heroism while serving with Company A, 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade. He was participating in a search and destroy operation when Company A came under intense fire from a battalion size enemy force. Momentarily stunned from the immediate encounter that ensued, the men hugged the ground for cover. Observing 2 wounded men, Chaplain Liteky moved to within 15 meters of an enemy machine gun position to reach them, placing himself between the enemy and the wounded men. When there was a brief respite in the fighting, he managed to drag them to the relative safety of the landing zone. Inspired by his courageous actions, the company rallied and began placing a heavy volume of fire upon the enemy's positions. In a magnificent display of courage and leadership, Chaplain Liteky began moving upright through the enemy fire, administering last rites to the dying and evacuating the wounded. Noticing another trapped and seriously wounded man, Chaplain Liteky crawled to his aid. Realizing that the wounded man was too heavy to carry, he rolled on his back, placed the man on his chest and through sheer determination and fortitude crawled back to the landing zone using his elbows and heels to push himself along. pausing for breath momentarily, he returned to the action and came upon a man entangled in the dense, thorny underbrush. Once more intense enemy fire was directed at him, but Chaplain Liteky stood his ground and calmly broke the vines and carried the man to the landing zone for evacuation. On several occasions when the landing zone was under small arms and rocket fire, Chaplain Liteky stood up in the face of hostile fire and personally directed the medivac helicopters into and out of the area. With the wounded safely evacuated, Chaplain Liteky returned to the perimeter, constantly encouraging and inspiring the men. Upon the unit's relief on the morning of 7 December 1967, it was discovered that despite painful wounds in the neck and foot, Chaplain Liteky had personally carried over 20 men to the landing zone for evacuation during the savage fighting. Through his indomitable inspiration and heroic actions, Chaplain Liteky saved the lives of a number of his comrades and enabled the company to repulse the enemy. Chaplain Liteky's actions reflect great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
"When leaders act contrary to conscience, we must act contrary to leaders."
-  Liteky, VFW Post 5888 - Congressional Medal of Honor.

Vietnam Vet, Brian Willson, wilfully sacrificed both his legs, prostrating his body on the tracks of an ammunition train; which video tapes forensically prove, did increase instead of slowing its speed, upon seeing Mr. Willson's supine body on the tracks - near the ammunition depot in Concord, California -  protesting the massive transport of munitions,  slated for use against Central American citizens and Sandanista soldiers by United States 'proxy murderers' (Nicaraguan 'Contras', endorsed and supported by the Reagan - 'Iran-Contra'/'Lt. Col. , weapons for cocaine merchandising - Oliver North' - Administration. Directly responsible for at least 100,000 'intercine' - non combatant, civilian - man, woman and child mortalities in Central America, as of 1983:'collateral damage').

And, last but not least, Vietnam Vet, George Mizo.

At this time, the Santa Cruz, CA. based Commander of VFW - 'Bill Motto'/'Wage Peace' - POST 5888, was Steve Brooks, who represented the Post in consensus support of the above and below listed Veterans:
Dean Metcalf (Author of the 'Nicaraguan Resolution'), *Bill Watkins (Sr, Vice Commander), traveled  to El Salvador on his own resources, where they met, counseled with and presented Sandinista president Daniel Ortega, with Post 5888's NICARAGUAN RESOLUTION.
And, again, Brian Willson - and others like them - traveled to oppressed Central American regions at issue, brushing harrowingly close to and being confronted by itinerant 'government death squads (and similar 'nameless < 'para-military', 'advisory' > elements', including American mercenaries ('mercs') in and out of uniform, sometimes participating in combat; operating, utilizing and/or conducting instructive classes in American weapons, including 'Huey Six  helicopters>')...'

The V.F.W. is the worlds oldest and largest overseas war veterans organization. It is chartered by the Congress of the United States.

That charter states specifically that... "the objects of the VFW shall be fraternal, patriotic, historical and educational; that its members shall preserve and strengthen comradeship; that they shall maintain allegiance to the government of the United States and fidelity to its laws; that VFW members shall foster true patriotism, extend American freedom and defend this nation from all Her enemies;  whomsoever, be they foreign, or domestic".

The VFW is also joined by 750,000 members of our Ladies Auxiliary in our efforts. They foster true patriotism, and strengthen the institutions of freedom by word and deed. They improve their cities, towns and neighborhoods through community service. They give aid to worthy comrades and to the widows and orphans. They extend helping hands to the needy and ailing.

Partial List of Press Published Events: Anthologized, narrated & authored by *Kent B. Robertson, aka 'Ben':

*Post 5888 Co-Founder, Post Officer of the Day - Chief Warrant Security Officer / Charter Member/ Post Historian./ Nine years alternate Rifleman and Captain of Honor Guard Service w'  Capitola Post 7263/ Universal LIfe Church Ordained VFW Chaplain At Large.                                                        .........................................
William ('Bill') Theodore Motto was K. B. Robertson's room mate in Santa Cruz and Boulder Creek, California.
While serving two consecutive one year tours in 'the bush'  as a cross-trained Combat Medic and Airborne Soldier of the 173rd Airborne Division - 'The 3rd Herd' - Bill Motto was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and Two Bronze Stars. He perished of a massive coronary at age 32, while fishing  near the Santa Cruz Boardwalk (with a fish in his bucket and a copy of Doris Lessing's Four Gated City in his back pocket); less than 400 yards from where he lived with Comrade Robertson. Motto was posthumously awarded 100% disability payments of $2,400 monthly for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This belated award was granted to his Mother, who signed it over to permanent monthly charity for distressed Vietnam Veterans.
