Danville and the Centre College is on high adrenaline rolling straight into the Norton Center for the Arts with the vice-presidential debate between incumbent Joe Biden, and the challenger U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan. It is a second time in a dozen years, Danville hosts a vice-presidential debate. There are benefits of doing it twice. For one, the name. “The Thrille of The Ville II” rings regal.
The media took hold of the ville yesterday. Abe Lincoln statue, now in front of the MSNBC’s oversized stage, is sporting a red, white and blue lanyard that comes with Lincoln's own media credentials, including his name and a recent photo.
One hundred Centre College students will see the debate in person. Their names were drawn by Centre College President John Roush after being rolled in an old-fashioned hand-operated drum.
Meantime, Megyn Kelly of the Fox News, also on location, is honing her debating skills with Delta Airlines guilty of losing her precious luggage, which contained the hand-picked and much deliberated outfit for tonight’s debate. In the absence of bare necessities Kelly went shopping to a regional Walmart for her second-choice on-air clothes.
The Fall, on the other hand, currently wearing its tri-color suit of red, yellow and bronze is at its best in Kentucky. The scenic drive from the Lexington Blue Grass Airport, with limestone rocks framing the road and the sweeping vista of the Kentucky river, is a living tribute to its natural beauty.
In Danville proper, the retailers’ windows show patriotic pride and the debate spirit. At Wayne and Jane’s Wine and Whiskey Bar the race is already on: “Biden’s Tongue,” containing Campari, ginger and soda sells for $7. “Romney’s Rickey”, a mix of bourbon, lime and crème de cassis (black currant liqueur) is $7.50. Yet, the bestselling drink, according to co-owner Mary Robin Spoonamore, remains “ The Undecided,” a combination of root beer and bourbon cream, $6.50. In case, the waiter is slow just holler.
While on numbers, I am personally interested in the significance of the number twelve for the outcome of the debate, considering the experts prediction: That it all won’t matter by Tuesday. “ Cruela The Ville”, what can I say.
