Do We Want To Be Right? Or, Do We Want Health Care Reform?

Rate: 11 Flag

::A Call to Arms!::

If this resonates with you, visit the link at the bottom and follow directions; pretty please!

I was gently snoozing away during my Saturday mid-afternoon nap when the stream of consciousness parsing all the important data while I slumbered began toying with health care reform.  Don’t you just love the dream state?  It can be so cathartic, and in this case, eye-opening (figuratively and literally).

My favorite political Salon contributors, to include Joan Walsh and David Sirota and new friends Norwonk, thewickedspear, Saturn Smith and Tim4Change (just to name a sliver of the beautiful political authorship here) since braving the blog world (Open Salon), are all right regarding this policy bottle neck on many levels.  The far right, and I mean to say far because I do believe in dissenting opinions to keep the governing process honest as well as keeping critical thought in the mix to create progressive solutions, and it’s pundits are holding hostage a very critical piece of legislation.  The left, and it’s way-too-slouchy middle are inadvertently caving to the GOP’s agenda for their own individual political gain – where is the Democratic leadership?  I don’t know many Americans, from both sides of the political party equation, who wouldn’t agree we have gotten way, way off course from the ideal of  “a government for the people, by the people, of the people.”  As my dear friend Renee says, it is now “a government for the market, by the market, of the market.”

So what are we, Obama supporters, or as not to mischaracterize, “health care reform advocates” (a neutral term we can agree on), “right” about?  Is the far right reaching into the hearts of the deep-seeded racist and pulling out their fear (masked as hate) for their own political gain (Walsh)?  Are corporations running congress on both sides of the aisle, subverting the value of the average American’s vote, or potentially even rendering it obsolete (me)?  Have the grass-roots movements been, well, up-rooted by their own strategic tactics to garner power in congressional parties rather than stay focused on the movement they set out to create ( Sirota)?  Is President Obama doing his job in a manner consistent to the change he promised to bring to Washington?  Are the likes of Senator Blanche Lincoln D-Ark so out of touch with the reality of what it means to be a member of the Democratic Party that she is willing to undercut a national agenda for personal political gain (with more to likely follow in their stead)?

The likely answer to all of the above is a resounding “yes.”  Yes to it all.  These are likely large pieces to an intricate puzzle to why this maze called health care reform is not only stalled, it’s divisive.  Whew, there, it’s settled. We’re “right”…

Right.  It’s such a short-term gain at times, isn’t it?  I’m not trying to minimize the benefit of the purview of our political horizon as it is essential to taking stock of where we are stand.  Remember, I’m including my own work and hard-earned insights in this remonstrance.  My frustration lies in my own, any maybe your, repeated expectation that, “this time it will be different.”  I know I’m not alone here.  I heard my new friend Grif say he’s lost hope in Congress.  Are we losing hope?

I began a dialogue with a gentleman by the name of thewickedspear.  His blog tagline reads “confessions of a recovering conservative.”  This intrigued me.  We began to chat after he left a comment about one of my political pieces.  After a few email exchanges, he said the following to me in private (printed with permission):

“For most of my life I've been a conservative and a member of the GOP. I've completely abandoned the GOP. I've not abandoned my conservative roots, only the GOP. There are so many people out there that are so nice and wonderful, and I've excluded the possibility of knowing them because of my ideological staleness. How sad for me.”

His words measured a sum of bravery I could not equate.  If he could reach across the aisle, why can’t I?  So we have begun a conversation.  We are trying to understand one another’s point of view, and it’s not too tough when you just listen a little and bite your tongue a lot.  Now, if we can do it, how hard can it be for these elected officials?  Ah, you see, we don’t have the corporate hand in our pocket waiting for the favor card to be pulled.  We have the freedom to conduct the conversation.  This helped me realize we are more powerful than Congress in one significant way – our vote is still “free.”  Its power may currently be compromised,  however, it is not purchased (thanks Tim4Change).

This is the conclusive point of my piece – if we, as Americans, don’t start doing this with one another, than I don’t think there is any hope for change.  Congress has had the opportunity, repeatedly, and was certainly primed for an exceptional opportunity this past January.  They are failing. Truly, if we can’t do it, why are we expecting Congress to do it for us?  It is time for round two; we did it last November and we can do it again!

Will there still be the lunatic fringe trying to get their message “over” heard?   Of course, they are scared.  However, this fear is mostly irrational and when a voice of reason and force comes from within our nation, we will overcome.  What does someone do when they are afraid AND they don’t understand?  Generally, they start shouting, hence all the anger we’ve seen and felt.

So, how can we change the conversational tone?  First, it’s time to put down any hints of a wise attitude and talk in simple terms.  Let’s state what we need, not what’s wrong.  Let’s talk, not demand.  Let’s divert the attention back to the change we need, not the fears we can’t conquer.  Let’s work together to send a message to Congress that America will not be duped so easily – we can prevail.

HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO AWAKEN AMERICA’S VOICE:  A Facebook page has been created named “America Chats”.  It is an invitation to voice a civil note to our elected officials from both political sides of American society on what we need done for health care reform.

Could this turn out to be a complete idealistic flop?  Yes or No.  Or, how about…No or Yes?  I believe this is the grass, grass roots effort we need to send a message of solidarity to the White House and Congress before the President’s speech Wednesday.

What have we got to loose?  It can work.

Once you post a message on Facebook, please share with your “friends” to get the momentum going.  This is a talented and informed audience, let’s lead the way!

Kate, I have thought very hard all weekend on what to do.
Here are some statements for you to consider.
We are now sheeple.
We are all right where the big corporations/military industrial complex want us: on our knees, begging bowl in hands, saying pretty please. The recent economic credit crisis has us down, but we are not out.
I personally do not think it is the left against the right. I think it is the greedy rich robbing us with both hands.
I may write about this later, and I will check out the Facebook page.
You might think about my comments, since I am a 'world citizen'.
Ms. Kate: Bravo, well done piece. However I do think you need to consider one point. You blame the far right for killing health care. Not so. Democrats have 60 in senate and wide majority in house and the while house. If health care doesn't pass, or for that matter any legislation doesn't pass, you need to check with Mr. Reid, Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Obama. The republicans are just as impotent now as they have been the last 15 years. No, this is not a failure due to the far right, it is a failure of democratic leadership to take advanatage of their electoral majorities.

As a conservative, I want people to have health care, who wouldn't. I would ask a couple of basic questions to start with:

1- Who doesn't have insurance and
2 - Why don't they

I think answering those two questions will give us a great idea on how to start to correct the problem. I don't think you can solve the problem at all until you at least understand those 2 questions! Once we understand why that problem exists, then we can proceed to solve the problem!

WS--it's not the poor who aren't being covered. They have medicaid. It is the independent small bussiness owners and their employees. And it is those working part time jobs---sometimes two or three---the single moms---who don't have coverage. The media has made the implication that opposing healthcare reform hits those who are poor. Let me tell you there are plenty of families making 50 to 60 k who cannot afford coverage. Those are the people we need to look at.
Looks like you have awoken and found your voice, Kate. I will check out the FB.
A couple of weeks ago, I did a cut and paste with some friends of a blog post by Thom Hartmann on the idea of allowing us all to buy into medicare as our insurance pool. It would happen at a rate that would allow it to be revenue neutral. I thought it was brilliant, and asked for feedback. In less than a week, there had been around 50-60 emails generated from that one (using the reply all button). I have both some very conservative friends and some classic union card carrying liberal types in that list. It was a great conversation.
You are right - this is what needs to happen. We need to talk AND listen. And we need to remain on the field until the battle is won.
Before I go to FB, I want to comment to wickedspear.
I agree with your assessment regarding why something has or has not passed this congress (or any other for that matter since Teddy Roosevelt first broached the idea of national health care). But your first question assumes a bias common in the debate, but not necessarily true.
To assume the problem can be solved by learning who has insurance and why someone might "choose" to not assumes anyone would want the minimalist and often substandard care an ER would provide. This is fine for the "personal responsibility" crowd but does not take into account real human suffering and tragedy.
For my money, the first question is "Why have we allowed health care to be delivered by for profit corporations of all stripes (insurance, hospital corps etc)?" Why do we have a sickness industry in this country rather than one that supports "Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness?"
Pink-slips for Congress and corporate CEO's, novel idea! Recently George Will was asked the question regarding his thoughts on the cause of the downfall of the financial system and and related entities. His answer......" 400 million Americans ". You and everyone else seem to come to the same conclusion that the American public needs to unite as one to stop this "insanity" before it gets worse. It seems that most Americans have this wish now but in effect have been living with " Attention Deficit Disorder " most of their adult lives. When news is read or listened to it is only snippets of the picture. When it doesn't really affect them at the moment they don't care. When crisis befalls them they become emotional. Small point, back when Hillary Clinton was pushing health-care reform, Rush Limbaugh had the audience. American's still have a weapon but it seems to have been in mothballs, it is called the vote. Sad to say rarely used with effectiveness. Politicians know this, corporate America knows this, why do they keep getting elected? Our so-called information age, if you look, consists of advertisements, on everything. How about those Ad-Sense, look at them carefully, they are everywhere, they tell you what you need. Ever see the movie " Needful Things ", quite interesting. Good post. My thoughts......Older
Your friend "Renee" who says "it is now a government for the market, by the market, of the market." is right on the money with her comment. Government has always been in the pocekts of the elite, and there's not too many indutries more elitist than, not just big insurance but MASSIVE insruance. What other industry can boast of losing 47 million customers and still not feel the pain?

Insurance companies stand to lose most, it's a massive business. Look what they've don to health care beginning in the late 1970s, ealry 1980s. And heatlh care is a massive business in its own right. Two behemoths, hashing it out while the industry implodes upon itself, leavin 47 million people in its wake, without insurance, filling the already swollen emergecny rooms with non-paying patients with colds and other minor health problems?

Great post.
Way to get us moving. I'll go to FB later this evening when I get home. I'm even willing to suspend my belief that this Congress is so inept that nothing short of a total overhaul (elections!) will make any difference. I can feel the vibrations of "We Shall Overcome" shaking loose.
Kate: "Democratic leadership" is an oxymoron. That explains much of the problem.

As for George Will: "400 million Americans " is off by almost 100 million. As usual, he has his facts wrong.

1- Who doesn't have insurance and
2 - Why don't they

As Michael Moore, among many others, demonstrated, almost no one has insurance, because their policies can't be counted on to work when they're needed.

The second question is even easier to answer: Because corporations are in business to maximize their profits, not to help people. Hence, until profit is taken out of health care, the system will not get better.
@Mission-Yes...and, I hope NOT!
I'm with you, "not out!". I think it may be left against right at the political level but not so much at the American people level. I have talked with a lot of conservatives (99.9% of my in laws and it isn't about the economics for a lot of them). It is a deep-seeded psychological, dare I say "brain-washed" in their instance (certainly not all conservatives - it is a demographic thing).

I appreciate your world citizenship. Would love for you to say what you "want" - send a message to the people running this message, whatever you want to call them. Then, please pass it on!
------------
@thewickedspear: thanks again for being willing to have the conversation - it is SO important and I am deeply grateful.

I think you misinterpret my message, I did try to keep it very simple, so it could be me. I am not trying to "blame" anyone. I think I clearly said it is a complicated puzzle with a lot of players, including your comment about the super majority failing to do it's part - Blanche Lincoln, my ref to my previous piece. I do think the far right is preying on the fear of people, which get's ratings, and has an upper hand in the conversational tone. That doesn't mean they are to blame - in fact, they fully believe what they are saying, and that's their right to do so. It's our right to talk back AND WE HAVEN'T BEEN DOING IT! We've been relying on inadequate Democratic leadership, as you mentioned, a Congress purchased by Corporations and on and on and on...

It's time for AMERICANS to reclaim THEIR VOICE and start by restating what they want and need and not stop until they get it. That is you and me - from both sides of the "American Aisle."

Blame mongering works for political campaigns; policy making is about the truth.

The FACEBOOK page is for comments for real Americans to state what they want - for us to see, from one another, that often we want the same thing. This is not a "send a letter to congress" page - yeah, that time has passed. I am sending notes out to again and again and again to the right places to page attention to the page. Now I just need people to post. Please help!
------------
@Arthur James - Love the metaphors. Please use the essential duty you speak of to speak out on Facebook and take "stock interest" in this "serious petition." You don't need to be informed to know what you want in the way of health care --- do you think care is compassionate? Do you think it is cost-effective? It can be that simple...just do your best..."pretty please"...I don't mind begging.
--------------
@John Moore - AMEN! This is me - we fall here - underinsured. Most families are one medical crisis away from this - it's the cause of most bankruptcies. Would love your support on the FB page - please let other Americans know what you want in the way of reform, your voice is the right one to be listening to. Every little bit counts. Blessings!
-------------
@tim4change - you made my hairs stand on end. Talk AND listen - on the battle field until we've won! Alleluia my brother in arms! Please do check out the page - it is a start. I am twittering, faceboooking, emailing, writing, posting, and commenting away. Would appreciate any and all support. Any and all company appreciated. Have I told you how much "you rock" lately?
--------------
@older/exasperated - Pink slips it is! :)

In lieu of that, let's get started. Unity it is! The FB page is in it's infancy, and certainly is a developer's nightmare (per my "knight" husband), but it is at least it's something.

Agreed on the ADD - and it's pandered to. The "vote" is worn and tattered right now, so let's find our voice. Please lend us your support...we need it. Your wisdom is immeasurable, and you can help lead the way. Be a part of the roots of the grass roots if you will. Please, pretty please, with "sugah" on top? You take the cake!
----------------
@Boomer Bob - you know what to do! T-T-F-N!
----------------

@Grif - Kumbaya my brother, kumbaya! I know you get this...practicing the principles in all...
Funny, I was actually watching a film with my daugther, "The Last Mimzy" (great, insightful to the universe flick) when they were explaining how to treat one another at one point from a spiritual place). And then I started thinking...and here we are. :)
-----------
@Gary ge: GET OFF MY PAGE AND DON'T COME BACK!
------------
@Bill Michton: I agree, I there are a lot of oxymoron's in this piece. You are correct. I was looking for some simplistic language so as not to be too "heady." The piece is more about what to do after we've named all the issues as to why HCR is not progressing...as in, "what are we, the American people, who this is affecting, going to do about it?"

What are you going to do about it?

As a point of note, when we engage those we disagree with, it may be wise to listen as well as speak. I'm not trying to be rude, but we can shout back and forth and one another all day long. We've been doing that for some time. Let's get out there and express our view and hear what others are saying as well...will you come express what you would like to see happen in the way of reform out on FB?
Kate,
Well done and nicely stated. I admire the call to civility. That's a new approach to the situation for which I shall cross my fingers and offer some optimism that it shall work. Hooray!
running the nation with referenda rather than elections has several advantages.

you get to vote more often, on things that you care about. this makes for a better electorate, who have a good reason to care about politics.

you can be on the winning side of most referenda, if you are in favor of things that benefit most of the nation. this creates a sense of community.

the nation gets better decisions. 50 million people acting as citizens are much more likely to get it right than half a dozen politicians starting a war for personal satisfaction.

this kind of society has a name, democracy.

nowadays, getting democracy is very easy, it really just needs a few million people to want it. hmm, maybe not so easy...
@Dave - thanks, and thanks for coming by FB and POSTING! Yay, your the first. Instead of looking at the glass half empty, I will see that as, "you are the first in a long line of many."
-------------
@al loomis - wow, I love the picture you describe, it is so hopeful. Wouldn't that be beautiful, isn't that the very "audacity of hope" Obama talks about? I have always believed it starts with one person talking with another who talks with another. So, in essence, FB or no FB page, it is already happening right here and now.

The conversation needs to change and we are the ones to change it. Congress is out to lunch in terms of reality - across both sides of the aisle.
Rated, on the fly. Glad to make your acquaintance and especially happy to read about the need to take action. More to come when I'm off work. Cheers
Such a thoughtful invitation...I'm impressed.
