Apple Confirms Suicide After iPhone Prototype Disappears

Rate: 9 Flag

Apple has confirmed the suicide of a worker for Foxconn Corporation in China who was interrogated last week after the components of an iPhone prototype on which he was working went missing.

Sun Danyong (Yong Sun Dan), 25, was reported by multiple sources to have jumped from a window on the 12th floor of his apartment building in Shenzhen last Thursday at 3 a.m.  After several days of speculation in the Chinese press, Apple confirmed the suicide in a statement issued to reporters earlier today:

"We are saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death.  We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect."

Chinese media reported that Danyong, a recent engineering graduate, had been detained and beaten by a senior security official for Foxconn after some of the prototype components for the iPhone prototype went missing.  Danyong is said to have been working on the fourth generation iPhone prototype for Foxconn, manufacturer of iPod and iPhone components for Apple in China.

Three hours before his death, Sun Danyong was chatting online with friends and posting on an Internet forum, describing the investigation over the missing iPhone "one of the most humiliating experiences" of his life.  Danyong reported the components missing three days after he was supposed to turn all of them over to their receivers from Apple on July 10th.

James Lee, spokesman for Foxconn, a subdivision of Taiwan's Hon Hai Corporation, apologized to Danyong's family yesterday and expressed sorrow for the incident.  He told China Daily Danyong's suicide "for whatever reason, reflects a management defect on the part of Foxconn to some extent especially over the troubles faced by our young employees."  Li Gimming, general manager for Foxconn,  has also apologized for the incident and states the supervisor involved has been suspended pending an investigation by police.

China Daily reports that Danyong was from a poor family in Yunnan province and had not fully paid back his loans to Harbin Institute of Technology, from which he graduated last year.  The suspended security officer could potentially face charges if police determine that his interrogation of Danyong was violent.

This is really really sad. How materialism drives people!
It sounds like these places are the technological equivalent of the apparel-industry sweatshops we heard so much about in the 90s. Somebody call 60-minutes!
yikes! scary how much pressure workers are subjected to in China. Makes our 12-14 hour work days, juggle 3 jobs seem like child's play ... I somehow doubt this would've happened here given similar circumstances. now, a jilted lover ... sure, that calls for suicide, homicide or both (McNair is but one sad example). But missing prototypes? I don't think so. Poor kid.
This is just horrible. I can't believe that someone would react to this situation in such a final, irreversible way as the man did. Its just sad that this his how horrible he felt. It makes me so angry that this young man was beaten and treated so terribly all for a dumb IPHONE. Think of how many people in the world would have bought back that last I-phone just to save his life. I know I would've. I hope people realize how disgusting this situation is and how a life with potential has ended due to materialism and greed.
It sounds to me like this man was troubled before this happened. I can't fathom why someone would commit suicide over a phone application. I feel for his family and friends, but I wonder if this is the whole story when it comes to his depression.
This is not at all surprising. I work for a competitor of Apple on similar products. Even our CEO has complained about the need for a "police state" atmosphere in which he cannot trust his employees to keep company secrets. We have security gorillas roaming the halls and people have been fired for inadvertently leaving stuff sitting around in the open. Tech blog writers and corporate spies are paying engineers fees for disclosing secrets. In this kind of environment it is not at all surprising that frustrated security supervisors take out their frustrations on a hapless junior employee. Very sad. Very predictable.
Mother (above) offers a very interesting perspective. So tragic, and I wonder how much this reflects the larger reality of overseas companies that make the products we covet. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
That was terrible, that is how materialism drives people in a different way. After all, Danyong was from an indigent family in their province and might need to create a little extra cash to pay back his loans to where he graduated. If his family has extra cash lying around, it's better to put it to use than have to worry about unsecured personal loans.
Heartbreaking and terrible. Rated and posted for friends
Getting beaten, physically beaten at work over iphone components? This is both sad and sickening.
How can we confirm this, is there a link you can offer Kathy?

Did this man jump from his 12th story apartmewnt or was he thrown?
Is this a coverup for another corp move?
I abhor violence and victimization.

My feelings are with his family and friends.

Apple should investigate this, its the least they can do for Yong Sun Dan.
