South African President Defends Semenya Amid Media Leaks

South African President Jacob Zuma today went to bat again for 18-year-old runner Caster Semenya, whose gender has been the subject of recent controversy.

Semenya, a South African, was instructed on the order of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IIAF) to undergo genetic testing in the wake of her recent gold medal win in the 800 meters in Berlin to determine conclusively whether or not she was a woman.  In recent days, leaks to media sources in Australia have suggested that the test results indicate Semenya is a hermaphrodite, although the IIAF has refused to comment and will not confirm this, claiming the results will be announced in November.

Zuma has been outraged at Semenya's treatment amid the gender controversy, insisting doctor-patient privilege should be respected.  South African Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile has escalated the dialogue to include the word 'war,' indicating that's what would result if Semenya is prevented from competing in the future.

Caster Semenya, the young runner at the center of the controversy, has withdrawn from competition tomorrow in the national cross-country championships in Pretoria, South Africa, where she was slated to run in the 4,000 meters.

Zuma's comments came at a press conference in Kleinmond, where he was meeting at a summit with leaders of the European Union.

Please read Lauren McLaughlin's excellent commentary, "Let Caster Run," from earlier today, if you haven't already:

Interesting story and he's right to stand up for her. But what the hell are the rules if you're a hermaphrodite? Is that even covered?

R.
I wondered that myself, John. Is Semenya effectively disqualified from competing as either a man or a woman if found to be a hermaphrodite? It's a sticky wicket. I am concerned primarily with what this is doing to a human being; it's quite a different situation from taking performance-enhancing drugs.
If that poor girl has testes then she/he/it should run as a man. I know that it's not the PC thing to say but if her testosterone level is that high, she's not a girl and the rules are pretty cut and dried about that. To bloviate about anti-Africanism is asinine.
Good to see President Zuma standing up for a gender-different countryperson. It's a big issue in South Africa, where despite legal rights there are serious problems with cultural discrimination. Zuma has been homophobic in the past. I hope this indicates he's grown in backing dignity for all citizens.
Darryl,
Yours is the comments which is absolutely on point.
You are correct about the INVENTION of anti-Africanism for this purpose, invented to dodge the issue(s).

Also, exactly how much has "PC" cost us ALL in freedom of expression, accuracy of definitions and $$$$$$$$$$$$$?
"PC" is BULLSHIT!!
I prefer someone to speak to ME in directly clear terms without the cowardice of "PCness".
If you think I'm an asshole, tell me THAT.
Do not try to euphemistically use, "You are anally challenged".
Fuck all that.
If this person has nuts, it's a male.
Western Civilization is so fond of the Greek, ther civilization and and the Olymics which they fostered. Athena is one of the major gods of the Greek Pantheon. In fact Athens is name after her. Athena was both female and male and the Greeks, male and female revered her.

If there were no DNA testing, what would be Casta's fate? The Committee was serching for durgs. They found none. What they are titlized about is sex. The West has never gotten over the question of "Who owns the pussy." This is the fuss over abortion and over whether Casta is male or female.
And I wonder how she feels. To discover your gender is odd, that you fall into a category of ployglot sexuality, in such a public way. This poor woman had her sexual identity and the sport she loves torn to pieces in the most public way possible, literally overnight. She must wonder why no one is talking about how she isn't a liar or a cheat, too.

We have to invent a new term for inhumanity, since hateful intolerant attacks come so easy to us, and we so readily forget the human beings in out sights. This crap is intrinsic to our "humanity".

What are we?
The entire thing - from the beginning - made me hurt for Caster and furious at the people who are treating her in such a callous manner. I hope she gets to say 'I told you so.' Thanks for this post.
This is an argument for unisex sports. Women have become much more competitive and capable over the past century, and it's time to make all sports co-ed. Yeah, some would be dominated by men, but other sports would be dominated by women. But ALL (including hermaphrodites and cross-gendered people) could compete according to their ABILITIES and not because of their SEX. Hey, wouldn't YOU like to see a female tight end catching the game-winning TD in the Super Bowl? I know I would.
