Open Salon Weekends: Bad Hair, A History

Rate: 21 Flag

I had this in the hopper the day iamsurly posted her now famous post on bad hair (great minds), and held this back as a result.  Since it's the weekend, it seems like a light and fluffy time to let it fly, no tiaras.  Just lots of silly trendy (and some not-so-trendy) hairdos.

Four Generations

Starting out life with a full head of hair, aspiring to be a Gerber baby.  Four generations.

Kathy Toddler

Ringleted toddler with home-cut bangs.  I've graduated to the Northern Tissue girl.

1960's.  Barbie had a bubble cut, and Hayley Mills was serving up double trouble in the original Disney film version of "The Parent Trap."  My mother added a headband, and voilà.

1972.  I'm sure I didn't intend to be channeling Jan Brady here, since I didn't even like her (Marsha, Marsha, Marsha)--more likely Catherine Deneuve (below, in "Belle du Jour") or Jean Shrimpton.  Oddly, the pics that survive of that hairstyle from the late '60's early 70's are all of, you guessed it, Jan Brady.

1979.  Bette Midler's Thighs and Whispers was flying off the shelves, and I had my first of many unfortunate passport pictures taken.  (Note to would-be forgers:  This isn't my legal name or my signature anymore, so have at it, won't do you any good.)

Early 80's.  The Carringtons on Dynasty were the hottest thing to watch on Wednesday night television, and I was rockin' that Linda Evans hair.

Kathy Quebec

1991.  Channeling Kathy Ireland, who was doing a lot of over-the-shoulder come-hither looks for SI.

Kathy Tahiti

Ditto 1992, Tahiti.  Frederique van der Wal was also doing it for Victoria's Secret then, and still more Kathy Ireland.

1997, Princess Diana was still with us, and short hair was glamorous.

I said no tiaras, but I lied.  Here's the tiara photoshopped pic that Will Someone Feed the Cat just sent me.  Thanks, WSFTC:

Since it's the weekend. . . something light and fluffy and filled with air (with apologies to iamsurly, who knows why and is expecting this post).
I'm doing the Phil Spector look right now........it scares the hell out of my cats. (and my husband.)
I've done the Phil Spector - it takes too much work to maintain the wild and crazed look that you have to sport with it - kinda like a when you wear those plaid punk pants with all the buckles and are forced to sport a Johnny Rotten sneer and spit.

The whole idolizing Kathy Ireland thing has me a little worried...
You look great in all the pics, but the last one might be a little too over the top. Although I did once get a perm and looked just like that.
I've had some of those styles as well! Oh dear. Going with the long straight side part thee days. A return to the long hair of the 60's. Gramma in denial, I suppose, but it's not gray yet!
I hear they found a bird's nest in Phil's hair. They left it in. The birds were so content.
R
I actually had Phil Specter's hair (almost) in the 70's. I'll try to find a pic. Fun post! Rated.
Those of you who are now sporting or have sported Phil Spector's hair, kudos, or condolences, as the case might be.

Cindy, if you're talking about the last photograph on the article, it's Phil Spector. If you're talking about another photo, you need to tell me which one.

surly, that was before Kathy Ireland was Kathy Ireland. I had to find pics that fit, but I was really more doing a Frederique van der Wal thing, and you can't find any of her pics that are fit to print. Plus, I thought the second Kathy Ireland pic sort of mirrored the pose. Or not. Maybe not. Never mind. The humor is there, but it's subtle.
Kyle, why did we think that was cool? I'm astonished even I had the same makeup, shocking. The bad rouge, too much on the cheeks, too much eye makeup, just laughing. I can still smell the KMS shampoo I used back then, NEFA and Cleans-pHree, and the UltraPak conditioner. Whoa. Pulling back sensory memories here. Bette wore the look better than I did, and I didn't even realize I was channeling her.
these are so great, I was thinking about my hairstyles over the years and I dont think I could do a post like this, I have wavy, thin hair and there are only a couple of ways it works. I love that you were on trend but you really looked good in all of them.
hee hee. I had a nearly identical permed look to your passport photo in the late 70's, as well. I have a Hall of Shame section in my photo box of my various hair-do's in that decade and the 80's. I gave up by the 90's and let my straight-as-string hair just do its natural thing, other than covering the gray.
Loved them all. I never followed the trends just went short to long to short. I am ,ok, was a blonde now I have what they call the frosted look. Just means white w/ a tad bit of blonde left....sigh
Einstein hair! Yay!

I tried the feathered, David Cassidy look for a while. It didn't work on me. Since 1983, I've had it cut short and parted on the side, like Jon Hamm. Now, if only I was as handsome as Jon Hamm . . .

And post fluff whenever you want, Kathy; Lord knows I do!
I'm just giggling at those of you who had the same Bette Midler poodle do. Kyle, I did go look at your post, very funny. Silkstone, hall of shame indeed. Lunchlady, smart of you not to be a trend follower. Ariana, takes a certain number of years I think to be okay with posting pics like these; I couldn't have done it some years ago. tai, Roger, JustCathy, Ginny, iamsurly, scanner, john, all of you, thanks for dropping by and for your comments and kind words.
Will Someone Feed the Cat just graciously sent me a tiara to wear, with a photoshopped pic, so I've updated my avatar accordingly for the week. Thanks to Shaggy who passed it along, and wore it well.
Your hair is fantastic in the 1992 pic, to be sure. But I am much more curious about the chair/blue background. Awesome!
Note: 1960's pic with Hailey Mills bubblecut now added, for those who saw the article before without it.

Douglas and Harvey, thanks. Will post fluff and go for the Phil Spector look, sure.

Lesh, indeed.

Ellen, that 1992 photo was taken in Tahiti aboard a cruise ship, and was a standard set prop/background aboard that ship. It's difficult to tell from that photo, but that particular dress has some sequins on it--not a lot, mind you, but a few.
The perm was my "fav". Thanks for the fun as always...
As I told Surly, I am victim to the "Ifro" or Irish afro, curly and gets bigger and more obnoxious as the night goes on. Can relate to all these do's only I have also straightened just for affect. Rock on. Rated for fun.
The only one you missed was the Carol Brady shag with the flipped up ends!

Love the tiara - very jealous!
Kate, that perm was high maintenance. Thanks for your kind words.

rita, I have Chicago Irish nieces with that hairstyle, know the one. Thanks.

mamoore, I actually did the Carol Brady look at one time, but it was more the Katie Couric incarnation, flippy ends on a short cut. Fortunately, I can't find pictures.
Kathy, thank you for this. That tiara suits is well deserved.

Hope
I really do need an editor right away. There is a word or two missing in what I wrote.

Hope
Shaggy locks I think pulls off that last 'do really well. If you do that hair style, just remember to duck when you walk through doorways.
Hope, you're welcome, and. . .don't we all? The one feature missing from this site is the ability to edit comments after posting (at least for those not on our own posts).

Jess, right you are about Shaggy, and he wears the tiara better, too.
I'm doing an intervention on you if you go with the Phil Spector look....
Phil Spector is innocent. A guilty man would never have let a jury see that hair.
So right, HSL. So right.
I just found this one. I think we've all had some form of the bad hairdo parade. rated.
Caroline, fortunately for the very worst I can't even find pics. I'm sure there's a reason for that.
Glad you directed me here. This is fabulous! You had me laughing but what a shock to see all the different styles. You rocked everyone of them. The come-hither look and Linda Evan both really suited you. Well they all did - 'cept forthe last one! That Phil Specter pic will certainly go down in history.
so long ago... yet such a short time. I do miss the photo album of all of the tiara wearing OSers and wish WSFTC had not taken her site with her in the night as she flounced off. She was a wonderful archivist and a great participant here while she lasted.
well, you might be a slave to fashion but you wear it well!
