You didn't have to do more than a Google search Wednesday to be reminded it's a special occasion. . .Big Bird's birthday, the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, which premiered November 10, 1969.

Google did a special tribute to the BB on its search page.

Continuing to recognize the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, the Google homepage has been updated to feature Cookie Monster for Thursday.

(For those in the UK,  Google sported Wallace and Gromit Wednesday, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary, and like the US version is featuring Cookie Monster on their home page today.)

I was juuuuuust a bit too old for Sesame Street when it came out, and then juuuuuuust a bit too old for Electric Company when it followed up a few years later. But speaking personally, I never much liked Big Bird.
I wondered why my google had BB feet...thanks for clearing up the mystery.
I was too old, too, Douglas. Sesame Street was enormously popular when I was in college. The big children's shows for us were Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room.
I hate to say it but I watched the first episode. My goodness, has it really been that long.
Kathy you are old...like me;)
Kathy, thanks for posting this. I stil watch Sesame Street every day and sing and dance along with the fun. :)

Hope
Big Bird is one of my nicknames, so hell yeah! happy Birthday Big Bird!

Wallace and Gromit rock, too!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG BIRD!! AND SESAME STREET!! !YEA!!!! Count em, nine trips to the bathroom. Hahahahaha!!

Sorry, Conan Brian did that gag on his show last night. :)
I liked the interview I saw of the guy inside. His arm would get real tired.
wow--it seems like he is ageless. :-)
Happy Birthday Big Bird indeed.
Beautiful tribute.

Rated.
It's always comforting to know there are others around who are old. . .like OEsheepdog. . .and me. For those who enjoyed Sesame Street as children, salute. For those who were too old, double salute. One of my favorite things about Google as a company is that it has a sense of humor, and generally great sensitivity, in featuring timely cover doodles.

I stumbled across Jim Henson's book in Publix late last night while grocery shopping; it was sitting on the floor of one of the aisles, I picked it up, put it back on the rack, and smiled.
Today "Google" is made out of chocolate chip cookies and Cookie Monster is eating it. So I'm guessing today is his birthday.
"Rated" because this made me smile.
Yes. I love the Cookie Monster doodle today. Hungry!
Just hearing Big Bird's voice makes me happy. I'm sad that my kids are too told now to watch it. I was 7-months-old when the show started and it still gives me joy to watch. My brother recently met Maria from Sesame Street at a kids' concert in NY city (he's a musician and she was singing too--it was a tribute show to Ezra Jack Keats). I was more excited than I would have been about any other celebrity!
I watched Sesame Street with our kids. I got up early Saturday and Sunday mornings with them, first so the wife could get some sleep, but second because the PBS station played two SS episodes back to back each day, so I could catch up for the week!
