Holding a Soldier Close

Rate: 13 Flag

autumntrees

It's enough to completely stop a heart.  The being told.

I heard again today, soldiers lost.

My heart stopped.

Not at war, they said.

Not off an ocean away, in the face of known dangers, presumed risks.

Home.

I thought of soldiers and soldiers.  My husband as he left for WWII, a young 19-year-old pilot, up to safe altitude then open your orders, Europe or Pacific?  Who knew?  Not until then, but an easy guess based on what was packed for the journey.  Off from a field in Indiana hopping across the Atlantic, Newfoundland-Greenland-Iceland, until finally, Ireland.  A mother left behind in Chicago, who went states away to pin his wings on him before he left.

And held him close.

His great-uncles.  Just landed from Ireland, then off to fight the Civil War.  Letters from the great battlefields.  A mother, holding them close, never intending to lay them in the cold ground of social conflict, a world away.

*******

Less than a week ago, I sat in a restaurant in Atlanta across from my oldest grandson and his girlfriend.  I wanted to hold on tight, and never let go.

Home in the middle of a second tour of duty, this time to an undisclosed location, first time to Iraq.  We make assumptions about where he is now, but he can't say, and neither could we if we knew.

I think of his dark eyes, dark hair, light heart.  I see him as a child, running through the forest, building teepees out of sticks, laughing.  Not a care.

And hold him close.

Powerful. Thanks. I remember stuff ... This from:`

The Moon is Always Female. - by Marge Piercy.
a poem:`
Armed combat in a cafe.
How easy for us to argue
shoving the ugly counters
of jargon across the table,
mah-jong tiles slapping,
the bang of ego on ego
feminist versus Marxist cant

To feel alienated
is easy, to use words
to hold self free,
clean from the taffy
of loving, from the wet
sticky hands of need.

We use our politics
as French papas put broken
bottles, jagged glass on top
of the walls of suburban
villas, so no prowler
can climb over.

What closeness remains
is that of samurai
in ritual sword dance
combat, each hoping to
behead the other and,
invulnerable and armored, escape.

Thanks for sad/sigh memories, alive.
some days the 'swords into ploughshares' thing seems so very far away... beautifully written, Kathy.
Well written, Kathy. In some fashion or another, I think we can all relate to this. Beautiful sentiment! R
Thanks for reminding us up close and personal about the cost of this. God Bless you and your family and thank your grandson for his service. Lovely piece. B
Coming from a military family, and having served time myself, I couldn't image what was going through the minds of people across this nation yesterday. If they are in a war-zone, it bad enough, but to happen before they even take off is as terrible as it gets. My nephew, who just joined, was there, starting his basic training and his Mother was going crazy trying to get in touch with him. Another shameful memory in American history!

Kathy -- your words reflect exactly how I felt yesterday. "My heart stopped"

Art James you are a genius.
I remember thinking, when I went off to war, that my mother had the worse of it...she was left to worry, to wonder, to hurt and I always knew she was holding me close.
Beautiful. thank you.
beautiful... this vet tips his hat. ~R~
Lovely and warm.
Thanks everyone for the kind and thoughtful comments on this thread.
A noble general once said: "No one love peace more than a soldier". I happen to agree. Thanks for your post.
Wistful and beautiful. What a lovely reflection!
