Dancing With the Stars Season 9 finalists Donny Osmond, Mya and Kelly Osbourne learn their fate on Tuesday night's show.
Dancing With the Stars' coveted mirror ball trophy was awarded Tuesday night to Donny Osmond, a surprise outcome at the end of the ninth season of the hit ABC reality show.
Entertainer Mya had been favored to win the competition after ten weeks which found her, Osmond and Kelly Osbourne as the three finalists.
Kelly Osbourne became the Cinderella story of the season, transforming from troubled daughter of rock royalty to ballroom princess. For her final dance she recreated her first dance of the season, a Viennese waltz, charming the audience and the judges with her emotional performance.
Osmond's Broadway-themed freestyle routine on Monday night was awarded three perfect 10's, edging out Mya, who disappointed the judges with three 9's for her "Hairspray" freestyle. The 51-year-old Osmond also received a perfect score of 30 on Tuesday night for his encore Argentine tango. That, combined with fan voting, put him over the top for the win.
His sister Marie was able to get to the top three with a loyal Osmond fan base in a previous season, but her rag doll freestyle failed to impress.
Donny Osmond is not the first Utahn to grab Dancing's mirror ball trophy. Former Utahns Julianne Hough and her brother Derek have both won as professional partners in previous seasons. Pro Chelsie Hightower and her snowboarding partner from this season, Louie Vito, also live in Utah.
Osmond was drafted into double duty during Tuesday night's award show to sing his teen idol hit "Puppy Love" for Hightower and Vito's encore dance.

Kellylark, I understand completely. It helps to keep in mind that Mya's freestyle scored three points behind Donny's, and her performance last night also came behind his. That hurt her ultimately, and it might have been closer had she nailed perfect scores both nights. The freestyle seems to be fairly determinative in past seasons. No doubt Osmond fans put Donny over the top, but it would have been harder to do if Mya had received perfect scores both nights. Gilles Marini had the same problem with his freestyle, might have won the competition otherwise.
I cannot tell you all how happy I am that this dreadful season of DWTS is finally over. If it hadn’t been for the commitment to write those corny RECAP’S…I probably would have stopped watching it back about the third show.
Although I went to bed in a rage last night, I woke this morning feeling that I am happy with the way it ended. With a very few minor exceptions, the season stunk to high Heaven; it was appropriate that it finished on a particularly rancid note.
There is absolutely no way those judges should have scored Donny higher than Mya on Monday night…and even less reason for them to have scored that supposed dance he didn’t do last night higher than the dances either Mya or Kelly did.
Donny should have come in third in the last dance category…not first. He did absolutely nothing during his dance except have Kym dance around him. He was just standing there! Kelly did a much better dance than he…and Mya out-danced Kelly by a mile.
Look…when Adam Lambert lost to that other guy on Idol (can’t remember the name, but I think it was Chris)…no big deal. I think everyone figured that Adam would make it big no matter that he came in second. But in DWTS…the contestants are already made people. They are, by definition, STARS already. The trophy is important.
Mya earned that trophy; she was BY FAR the best dancer of the season…the most entertaining…the most consistent.
Perhaps it was, as Suelle mentioned in her comments yesterday, a bit unfair to have Mya as a contestant considering her background. But she was a contestant! As with Kristi Yamaguchi, with whom Holly had a problem, she was INVITED to participate…and the judging should have been fair.
The judges showed themselves to be whores to whatever pressures were brought to bear on them to have Donny win. Without their high judging scores…I doubt the results would have been the same.
The show should begin a downward spiral into television history immediately.
It is not worth watching!
that kelly osbourne could learn to dance that well in 10 weeks? amazing. mya whoever she is (i'm not up on singers -- was she a singer? -- in whatever genre she does/did occupy) was a great dancer but her personality was like a piece of cardboard with an attitude. and donnie osmond winning? he's old! i'm old! he dances like a kid. ya gotta love it.
Mormons don't deserve prizes. They should get prison sentences for fraud!
I too was glad that he won, it confirms how ridiculous and utterly boring this show is. He is a marginally better dancer than Jerry Springer.
Granted, there are many individuals out there who take DANCING WITH THE STARS far too seriously, forgetting that the show is first and foremost intended for entertainment value; and even the media reports the events of the show as if reporting serious journalism.
That being said, this is what I feel as to the outcome: Kelly truly put her heart and soul into virtually each and every performance; and truly shined in both the semi-finals and finals: She is a warm and loving individual with a great deal of heart and has mastered the art of perseverance and the ability to show grace and agility even under intense pressure (much of which may have arguably been self-imposed in her case). Yet, for reasons unknown, she did not garner favor with the judges as the all-around favorite. I don't think that the judging of her final dance Tuesday night was right at all: Kelly should have been placed in at least second place; and awarded at least 28 points for that Viennese Waltz of hers.
As far as Mya goes, I don't know what happened to or with her. While Mya has recently alluded to her prior ankle fracture and apparently related ankle sprain as playing a role in whatever limitations she may have been confronted with, for the most part I personally was unable to connect with this celebrity emotionally during many of her and her partner's performances; and that likely was experienced by many of the viewers as well, thus leading to her downfall, so to speak. I did enjoy Mya and Dimitri's jive on Tuesday night; and while that performance may not have been scored right, there is no doubt in my mind that when Mya's freestyle did not get any tens, she threw the door wide open for Donny to win (or even Kelly to prevail, for that matter).
I was not a fan of Kelly Osbourne's prior to DANCING WITH THE STARS. Kelly herself has acknowledged that she made mistakes in the finals; and that while she may not be the best dancer, she has still set as a goal being the best that she personally can be.
I did have a feeling that Donny Osmond might win, especially when he was awarded all tens in the freestyle performance; and I applaud Donny winning the competition in spite of his age, almost 52 years of, and often-demonstrated below-average stamina. I am happy for Donny Osmond and applaud his win. In all honesty, I might just be happier for Myna not winning than Donny winning. As for Kelly, I certainly hope that she will continue to dance, with her partner, Louis, or otherwise; and I think, if she chooses to participate in the same, will be absolutely fabulous in the upcoming exhibition tour of DANCING WITH THE STARS.
