Don't Cry for Jenny, Argentina: Sanford Files for Divorce

Rate: 14 Flag

South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford appearing in a televised Barbara Walters interview earlier this week. Walters named Sanford one of the Ten Most Fascinating People of 2009. Sanford filed for divorce from Governor Mark Sanford early Friday.

After months of trying to salvage her marriage to the Governor of South Carolina, Jenny Sanford filed for divorce Friday in Charleston County Family Court.

In a statement, the South Carolina First Lady said, "This came after many unsuccessful efforts at reconciliation, yet I am still dedicated to keeping the process that lies ahead peaceful for our family."

The Governor, 49, became embroiled in scandal in June when he disappeared and told reporters he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.  It was later discovered he was in Argentina with his mistress, Maria Belen Chapur.  Jenny Sanford learned about the affair in January, and separated from her husband two weeks before it became public.

The Sanfords married in 1989 and have four sons.  Prior to her marriage, Jenny Sanford was a Wall Street investment banker.

It's kind of refreshing to see one of these women actually dump the guy!
it seemed inevitable with the "soul mate" discussion about the liaison in Argentina. It is just sad that the kids have to go through this.
The biggest mystery is why she stayed so long.
R
Based on her former job as an investment banker, I wonder if she will have to provide spousal support to the Appalachian Trail adventurer. Probably, John Blumenthal, the reason for staying so long, to avoid alimony.
She was a class act the entire time. After he said he was going to "try to fall back in love" with his wife I wondered why he thought she would consider that to be a kindness. How white of him. If it is true that the money in the family was hers he should be selling used cars in no time.
Good for her for taking care of herself and her sons.
Why is it that private stuff just can't stay private, I mean a hike up the Applachian Trial what did he think, he was Johnny Appleseed?
I might be in the minority, but I'd like to see Sanford chuck all political aspirations and run off to Argentina for a (yes, selfish) happy ending for himself. He clearly loves the Senora more.
If everybody followed their hearts instead of the money, I bet more people would end up in very different places than they are right now.
One of the ten most fascinating? Oh I don't know...
I see nothing in the least fascinating about this person.
I would have suggested a samurai sword. But this lady does show much class. ~R~
Good for her! Appalachian Trail my butt.
They are both better off and so, in the long run, are the kids. Maybe she can find someone who truly loves her because at some point they both came to the realization that he did not. It was just a matter of time after that, whether it came before or after the Appalachian Trail fiasco. He can figure out whether or not Maria really is the one for him now. I think she is but time will tell.
Mark Sanford has a great new defense: "At least I'm not Tiger Woods..."
She is a childhood friend of my aunt's. Grew up north of Chicago. The class you see is totally real. Don't be surprised to hear a lot more from her. Very impressive person.
I don't think this is good for anything. It just is, and too bad for the kids.
Good luck to you, Jenny. If he has to "try to fall back in love with you" I'd say that's a big red flag right there. The breakup of a marriage is tough, but staying married to a man you no longer love and trust is even worse. It's nice to see you have the self-respect to get out instead of making nice on the outside while seething on the inside.
The biggest mystery is how such a dope as Sanford got elected governor, oh wait, Governor of South Carolina -- that explains a lot.
Ya gotta love the AdSense ads on this page: "Marry Argentinian Beauty Queen & Find True Family Happiness!"
If she continues with the class, grace and independence she has shown so far, the kids will be fine. I'm so glad she's doing this.
I always thought she was an heiress to the skill tool company
As far as I was concerned when he made the "soul mate" comment about the other woman that was the final nail in his coffin. As if he really needed any more.

I couldn't believe the "soul mate" comment was made in the same sentence where he was saying he wanted to reconcile whit his wife!

Just another person/politition with no integrity.
I forgot to include the "fall back in love" comment he made with the other woman as his "soul mate". It was just to disgusting. I could'nt beleve what I had just heard come out of is mouth.
Walter's most fascinating people are chosen based on popularity and those willing to actually be on the show. I am sure the show's producers start with a wish list of people it wants to interview and settles for who will actually do it.

That is why the majority of those interviewed are "dance with the star" quality celebrates. What made Jenny Stanford a celebrity was not her actions, but her husband who could not stop talking about his affair. Don't get me wrong, she shows a lot of class for not dragging her family through the sorted details of their marriage.
But, face it in the end you have a husband who cheated on his wife and ended their marriage. It happens everyday, but the fact they were public figures only made it interesting not fascinating.
I have complete and total respect for this woman. I saw her interview and was impressed with her composure, reason and intelligence. And I couldn't help but thinking, "FINALLY!" And what a great message to send to her four sons.
I really enjoyed watching the strength of this woman. My life parallels hers. My x-husband, a commerical Airline Pilot, left me for a Columbian woman. He also asked if he could go see her and then come home to me and my children on a regular basis. We divorced. It has been very painful. It's difficult to overcome someone that betrays your trust and love. She is my new hero!
So very sad, but such a proud woman.
