Like many, I was initially cynical when I heard that Sir Elton John was the surprise entertainment at Rush Limbaugh's fourth wedding this weekend in Palm Beach.
Reports began surfacing shortly before the nuptials between Rush, 59, and Kathryn Rogers, 33, that the famous British pop singer played to standing ovations in The Breakers Hotel's Ponce de Leon ballroom for the 400 attendees Saturday night, including James Carville and Mary Matalin, Sean Hannity, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson, apparently for the tidy fee of $1 million.
As soon as the news hit, the Internet went wild with disappointment on both sides. "Say it isn't so," and "Why I'm disappointed," or "Is it okay to hate X now" were common themes.

But I thought, after a minute to catch my breath. . .doesn't this give hope for our too often divided, and divisive, civilization?
Rush is the radio darling of the right, and outspoken against gay marriage. Elton is polar opposite (noted by conservative author Matt Abbott of Renew America, who called him the "anti-Christian queen of pop-rock"), and unapologetically advocates for gay marriage as one who is both openly gay and legally joined to his partner, David Furnish, since 2005.
Then I read Heather Higgins at Ricochet, who attended Rush and Kathryn's weekend wedding in Palm Beach. Higgins shed more light on how the unlikely pairing came about.
According to her sources, Sir Elton John and Rush Limbaugh were both staying at the same Hawaiian hotel when Rush took ill. Apparently, Sir Elton became concerned and expressed that through hotel management, which led to Rush's intended bride Kathryn asking if the famous singer would be willing to perform at their wedding. John is said to have rearranged his schedule just to accommodate the event, which he was happy to do.
Higgins notes: "While both are fully cognizant of political differences, Sir Elton is genuinely open minded about getting to know people of different viewpoints and sees himself as a bridge builder. . ."
That's a mighty big bridge, Heather. Kum-ba-ya.

When I first heard of Elton playing I was disgusted. It is like he is supporting the big liar and mean man. The marriage itself boggles my mind. The hate that spews out of that man's mouth on air does not blend well with women or gay people. Yet there they are supporting him. No, I still dont like it. It makes me not trust the world at all. People like Rush should be alone on a desert island.
Rush Limbaugh makes a living bashing the "gay agenda," meaning everything Elton John stands for. Hey, I don't wish Limbaugh or anybody ill health, but that doesn't I'd want to work for him. By taking a reported $1 million to play Limbaugh's wedding, he's putting money (that he doesn't need) over principle. He's lost a lot of status in my eyes.
What I am sure of, as well, is that he didn't do it for the money. His net worth is up wards of $500 million, so a million bucks one way or the other ain't no big thing.
I thought that it was necessary to spell that out. Rush is worth $400 million from his radio contract alone. To all concerned, to his new wife and to Sir Elton, a net worth of $400 million is clearly a more important factor than his homophobic and sexist radio show and his de-facto leadership of the Republican Party, and thus the leadership of all those who would see them dead or enslaved.
It's music and marraige. Does anyone think Elton actually tried to defend his position with all those conservatives there? No. Does anyone think any of them tried to make him? No.
Don't you think the bride looks an awful lot like Ann Coulter?
Does Elton really need to whore himself out for that extra million? It seriously pooches his credibility when he's speaking out about homophobia on one hand and then playing court jester to the likes of Limbaugh. Barf.
