Breaking: Trump Decides Not to Run in 2012

The comb-over real estate mogul best known in recent years for his high-profile firings on the reality television show Celebrity Apprentice has given himself the pink slip for 2012, narrowing the field of potential GOP candidates by one more.

The full text of his statement just released to the press:

For Immediate Release:

New York, New York: May 16, 2011

After considerable deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to pursue the office of the Presidency. This decision does not come easily or without regret; especially when my potential candidacy continues to be validated by ranking at the top of the Republican contenders in polls across the country. I maintain the strong conviction that if I were to run, I would be able to win the primary and ultimately, the general election. I have spent the past several months unofficially campaigning and recognize that running for public office cannot be done half heartedly. Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.

I want to personally thank the millions of Americans who have joined the various Trump grassroots movements and written me letters and e-mails encouraging me to run. My gratitude for your faith and trust in me could never be expressed properly in words. So, I make you this promise: that I will continue to voice my opinions loudly and help to shape our politician's thoughts. My ability to bring important economic and foreign policy issues to the forefront of the national dialogue is perhaps my greatest asset and one of the most valuable services I can provide to this country. I will continue to push our President and the country's policy makers to address the dire challenges arising from our unsustainable debt structure and increasing lack of global competitiveness. Issues, including getting tough on China and other countries that are methodically and systematically taking advantage of the United States, were seldom mentioned before I brought them to the forefront of the country's conversation. They are now being debated vigorously. I will also continue to push for job creation, an initiative that should be this country's top priority and something that I know a lot about. I will not shy away from expressing the opinions that so many of you share yet don't have a medium through which to articulate.

I look forward to supporting the candidate who is the most qualified to help us tackle our country's most important issues and am hopeful that, when this person emerges, he or she will have the courage to take on the challenges of the Office and be the agent of change that this country so desperately needs.

Thank you and God Bless America!

He certainly doesn't have self esteem issues. I'm grateful to you for bringing us this wonderful news!
Oh, too bad--I was looking forward to a really entertaining (as in comedic, not dramatic) election season!
Thank God. Thanks for the news Kathy
Best news I've heard in awhile...he never seemed to get the joke, glad he's come to his senses.
He's a joke. Thank you for bringing us the news, Kathy.~r
He is smart enough to know he is an idiot. Thanks for this news.
damn! It was going to be such fun watching all the mockery...
Say it ain't so! (I was so looking forward to the debates:)
I admire your courage in posting this.
i hear maybe he's waiting for the government's overthrow and his then way cool, my tv show is the most popular ever, i'm worth billions, and i'm nonsensical in a sensible way demeanor will sharpen for his coronation ... or maybe clown college graduation.
Thank the Lord. :)
Ooo..... We're so disappointed... = -{
So glad to hear this! Thank you.
Can't say I'm surprised at this turn of events, but I sure am glad the national nightmare is over...or is it? Just because he's not running doesn't mean he won't continue to run his mouth.
Well, of course he isn't. He never was, IMHO. He was just stroking his ginormous ego for a while at the expense of serious contenders. Jerk.

Hey Donnie, I have a quarter that says you'd lose. I have no respect for Trump, the man,s a D**k with a capital D. What arrogance. That anyone could consider voting for a man who's personal wealth is so tied up in bad debt is beyond comprehension. Isn't the country in bad enough shape without trying to let this guy hand over even more cash to create the impression of wealth on a national scale? Do I smell a third party bid in his future?
Translation: he read the polls that showed he had dropped from 26% to 8% in one week, after Obama released his birth certificate, killed bin Laden and, oh yeah, mercilessly ridiculed Trump at the Correspondents Dinner and made him a national laughingstock.
It's kind of too bad. On the one hand, it would really make Republicans look like a joke. On the other hand, elections are too much of a joke now already.
Very interesting...I wonder if there is some bigger, hidden reason behind his pulling out of the race?
Darn. I was so enjoying Gary Trudeau's Trump in Doonesbury. He was able to diagram how the hair worked, and for that, I'll always be grateful. Oh well. When your fifteen minutes are up, they're up.
His announcement provided a brief respite from the bad news of the day.
Even if he had, I figured he was unelectable because: of his out in the open affair with Marla while still married to wife #1. And now he's on wife #3 with children with all 3 wives. America just doesn't have the palate for their presidents being Open philanderers [with the exception of Kennedy and Clinton] and multiple divorces. IMHO.
Well, in the words of Annie Hall "la di dah, la di dah........he is afraid of losing that's all. Too bad really it was so much fun to have him up there> I will surely miss him as will Jon Stewart no doubt.
Ohhhhh noooo! I was so hoping he'd run. Not only would he split the Republican vote, it would be so very entertaining to watch him frame his life's history within "family values" parameters. So. Much. Fun!
Every now and then, despite all evidence to the contrary, something decent happens.
He couldn't stand the heat so he got out of the kitchen. I wonder if the Press Club mockery was the last (and first too?) straw.

I was pretty sure the run was a vanity project and he'd bow out before he suffered humiliating losses. At least he kept in character on his exit; the absurd boast that he'd have won had he stayed in.

For any SCTV fans, this was surely reminiscent of a similar run by Jackie Rodgers Jr.
