Sister Under Siege: Operation Rescue Goes to Albuquerque

My sister does not run into burning buildings. She does not tiptoe across steel girders at high- rise construction sites. She is not called upon to resolve domestic squabbles or chase down carjackers. She does not spend her days in the deep belly of the earth, mining for coal, or out on inhospitable seas, trolling for fish. My sister Martha does not have a job that would typically make the “top 10 most dangerous jobs” list. Still, every day when she goes to work, I worry about her just a little.
Martha is the head of security and public affairs for Planned Parenthood of New Mexico. On any given day, she deals with miscreants, protesters, religious freaks and various other individuals and entities that take issue with the work of her organization. They are daily fixtures. From time to time, she has to chase them off of the Planned Parenthood property or call the police if they are harassing a patient. One of the mainstay groups is Project Defending Life, which has its headquarters just 30 feet away from Martha’s office. Their leader, “Father Stephen,” holds mass in front of the Martha’s building every Tuesday. For the most part, Martha and her team can ignore the anti-choice riff raff. It’s all in a day’s work; these pests are an unfortunate but relatively benign part of the scenery. However, of late, Martha and her Planned Parenthood co-workers are dealing with a much more menacing and potentially dangerous problem: Operation Rescue.
Operation Rescue is a domestic terrorist group that uses intimidation, harassment and violence to attempt to deny women in the U.S. the right to choose whether or not they have an abortion. They have been linked to a number of violent crimes against clinics and abortion providers across the U.S., including the recent murder of Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, KS. There also seems to be a troubling cross-pollination between Operation Rescue and other lunatic fringe groups, such as Army of God, that do make an outright call for violence and “justifiable homicide” against those they deem “baby killers.” Troy Newman, the current leader of Operation Rescue, recently claimed that they do not condone violence, yet in his own book “Their Blood Cries Out,” he discusses the “bloodguilt” associated with those who provide abortion services and claims that the Bible says the atonement for bloodguilt is death. Cheryl Sullenger, the senior policy advisor for Operation Rescue, spent two years in prison for plotting to bomb a clinic. For every abortion provider that has been murdered in the United States, Operation Rescue has, in one way or another, been connected. Troy Newman’s claims are not merely disingenuous; they are outright lies.
Operation Rescue has recently set its sights on Albuquerque as a new arena for their tactics. They were previously quite active in Wichita, where Dr. Tiller was one of the few providers that performed late term abortions. In 2009, Dr. Tiller was gunned down while attending church services at the Reformation Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Scott Roeder was convicted of his murder. With Dr. Tiller’s death and subsequent shutdown of his clinic, Operation Rescue is now turning its focus to Albuquerque and on Dr. Curtis Boyd, who also performs second and third trimester abortions. Operation Rescue is slowly increasing their visibility in Albuquerque, which they refer to as the “abortion capitol of the world.” Henry Bud Shaver, an Operation Rescue “missionary,” has recently been picketing Martha’s office, and Operation Rescue’s “Truth Truck” has been parked in front of Dr. Boyd’s clinic. Although Planned Parenthood has no affiliation with Dr. Boyd, it are still being targeted by Operation Rescue. It is troubling to note that the driver of the Truth Truck is also a member of Project Defending Life. It would seem that existing anti-choice groups in Albuquerque are convenient bedfellows for Operation Rescue.
Martha has been working on behalf of women’s health and reproductive rights for well over two decades. While living in New York, she was an active volunteer for the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL). She went on to become a paid staff person at NARAL’s Albuquerque affiliate, and has been with Planned Parenthood for several years. Throughout her career, Martha has seen it all. Clinics have been set on fire, vandalized and shot at. Cryptic notes have been left on Planned Parenthood office doors and on the windshields of vehicles belonging to its staffers. Martha has arrived at work to find red paint splattered on the sidewalk in front of her building. She has been subjected to taunts by probably hundreds of protestors. “Baby killers” has been spray-painted across clinic entrances. Martha has regular meetings with the FBI, as well as other law enforcement agencies. She is briefed on the activities of several anti-choice terrorist groups and the militant and dangerous fanatics that associate with them. The threat is very real. Operation Rescue has an observed pattern of seeking out unstable loners, inciting them to violence and then, when a crime is committed and that individual is caught, distancing themselves from the offender, denouncing the act and denying any association whatsoever. It is this maneuvering that I find especially troubling because so far, it seems to be working for them.
At its core, Operation Rescue is about misogyny and controlling women through violence and fear. When any group or entity would attempt to dictate what I do with my own body or to limit my access to health care, it is a political affront and an outrage. However, if any group or entity would threaten or harm my sister, it is a personal violation of the greatest magnitude. I absolutely will not have it.

Footnote: In response to Operation Rescue’s move into Albuquerque, the pro-choice community is planning a rally for July 30 at the Planned Parenthood of New Mexico office site. Citizens, legislators, students, families and activists are coming together to send the strong and unambiguous message that Operation Rescue is not welcome in the state of New Mexico. For every rate that I receive on this post, I will donate one dollar to Planned Parenthood of New Mexico. This is not about me. This is about my sister.

It should be decided by women!
(R)ated for having such a brave and compassionate sister!
This is it in a nutshell. Abortion rights are human rights. The right to safe reproductive care should be the right of all women. No person nor government has the right to make a decision for a woman regarding her reproductive health. Women, with the counsel of those they chose, their doctor, their spiritual leader, their spouse, etc. are smart enough to make decisions for themselves. As a Dr. Tiller had said, "Trust Women."
It confounds me that women cannot make these decisions. Even Sarah Palin practiced the right to choose. She chose to give birth to last child, but considered ending the pregnancy without telling anyone. This was her choice. This is the same choice that some would take from women.
Having been closely involved with this volatile subject publicly for several years, I can say in all honesty that I understand what your sister is doing everyday and I applaud her for her work. You honor her by sharing this story. There is no religion that respects women that will condemn her for decisions she makes based on her health and often a doctor's recommendation. No one here is saying abortion is not without consequence, but that is not the issue. It is the right to make a choice about one's own life and health.

I sent $25. Who's next?
I lived in Santa Fe for a number of years, and can tell you that, with the heavily Catholic population, abortion is rarely viewed as a viable option. "Abortion capital of the world" my left ***.
Also, if you talked to these Operation Rescue people (assuming they are able to talk sensibly), you would likely find that they are engaging in this intimidation based on "the sanctity of life." At the same time, most, if not all, would claim the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are "the work of God."
Can you say hypocrisy?
For a true understanding of consistent views on the sanctity of life, I would suggest contacting the Catholic Bishop for the Santa Fe Diocese, or the clergy for St. Bede's Episcopal Church (San Mateo Road, Santa Fe). Both of them would be more than happy to explain that truly claiming to support the sanctity of life means that ALL (maybe Operation Rescue needs to hear it again - ALL) life is sacred. Additionally, both of the above mentioned clergypersons wrote editorials to the local paper (the Santa Fe New Mexican) in strong opposition to President Bush's "pre-emptive strike" in Iraq.

The NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC) has written to Archbishop Michael Sheehan in Santa Fe asking him to order Father Stephen and Project Defending Life to distance themselves from Operation Rescue but he has failed to do so. In fact, Operation Rescue proudly displays photos of Father Stephen with Newman and the Shavers on their website. NM-RCRC has an online petition asking the archbishop to act and I encourage you to sign it at http://www.nmrcrc.org/action.php
Meanwhile, we're gearing up for our Rush Hour Rally Against Clinic Violence this Friday and invite you to join us in spirit on Facebook - Katy provded the link in her post - and on Twitter @ppnewmex. Sincere thanks!
So no child should be unwanted and left for someone else to not care for.
My big sister interned and then worked at Planned Parenthood in VA. I don't think I could deal with the tension, the threats and the terrorists (more people need to realize that's what they are) on a regular basis. Again, thank goodness for Martha & those like her.
Planning when and if you will be a parent is what we can and should do. I can't understand how people, Americans, can be against that.

I'll say it again, Operation Rescue is about misogyny and hate. If they were interested in the sanctity of life, they would be putting their efforts into HELPING THE LIVING.
O.R. is a violent, terrorist group. Nothing more. Thanks to Roe v. Wade, abortion is legal in the U.S. and American women have a right to choose. However, murder and terrorism are not legal. O.R. continues to tread on the wrong side of the law of the land and of the moral law of humanity.
Who are these murderous misogynistic scum who terrorize, intimidate, threaten and distort the issue of privacy and life and try to TAKE AWAY any one's right to go about their business in a lawabiding fashion? How fucking dare they?
These terrorist bastards should be in jail, every last one of them. And I'm fed up with the federal government allowing them free reign to harass decent Americans pursuing their private lives, making private choices.
My heart and support go to your sister and the Pro Choice Movement.
Katy, You're lying, grossly deceptive and slanderous in your rant against Project Defending Life and Operation Rescue. Troy and Cheryl are law-abiding Christian people. PDL is supporting over 50 women in crisis pregnancies whose babies will be given the gift of life. Your poison-tipped pen will not hide or distort the fact that
you're defending the freedom to choose ... to what? Destroy innocent human life. Misogyny? C'mon, Katy. There are more women in the pro-life movement in America than men. I, for one, pray, before you meet your Creator, that you and your sister, Martha, ask for forgiveness for the lies, deception you have instigated, and for your twisted thinking about the sanctity of human life. You, your sister, Martha, along with Boyd and his hired abortionists and Planned Parenthood will be on my prayer list.
Remove me from your prayer list.
I just moved back to Colorado having lived a year and a half just north of Santa Fe. There, the "pro-life" (forced birth) movements were also opposed to birth control and to anything which seemed to them like "socialized medicine" - giving medical aid to those who needed it, including mothers-to-be and their children. I cannot understand how someone can call themselves "pro-life" if they are unwilling to help children who are already born..... But that can be for some other post at some other time. I admire those, such as your sister, who put their lives on the line so that women do not die due to botched abortions.
I still have friends in Albuquerque. I am going to forward this to them.
