The Horror...and Piers Morgan's Righteous ROAR

Rate: 6 Flag

I am not a Piers Morgan fan.

Every now and then, I tune in to see him interview someone I really like, and then he gets to that inevitable and oft-lampooned moment when he smiles that…obsequious little smile that makes me shudder, and asks:

“So…let me ask you this, Dalai Lama…how many times have YOU been properly in love?”

And I reach for my remote…

But last night, Piers Morgan roared.  I mean, he ROARED—not for show, not for the ratings or the cameras or anything like that.  I’m sure of it.  I could feel it.

I don’t know if it was the old British tabloid reporter spirit rising up inside or just serious righteous indignation—no, it was more than indignation.  It was pure, Grade A, full on, “fit to be tied” rage.

Faced with the same totally illogical—and undocumented—“If everybody had a gun we’d have less violence” prattle from one of the strangest gun enthusiasts I’ve ever seen, he just…reached his personal limit, I guess.

And so have many, many, many of us.

I wept with Obama yesterday.  And again and again and again all day long, and I live nowhere near Connecticut.

But I live in Tucson, and we had our saddest day not long ago.  So…some of what I felt was about that.  And one of my daughter’s friends went to that elementary school, too.  So that “six degrees of separation” thing was more like…two degrees, for me.

And when I heard this gun guy first of all lying about the statistics for murders and violent crimes in other countries who have always had or have just passed strict gun laws, I was mad enough.

But when he said that gun laws kill people more than guns do…if Piers hadn’t roared I would’ve.

In fact, I did, but Piers got so loud and so angry that I shut up and just watched in utter amazement.

And awe.

I have written this before and I will probably wind up writing it again, but…here goes.

The policemen who came to our school when I was an administrator did NOT want everyone on campus to have guns.   They were kinda hoping--all but one particularly interesting one who felt that even the kids should arm themselves-- that there would be stricter gun laws someday.

Here is why.

If you are a police “first responder,” and you get to a campus and see someone with a gun, you are probably going to shoot that person.  Because it’s a campus full of kids and if someone has been shooting at those kids it is your duty to shoot that person.

But…if all the teachers and everyone else are armed…you don’t know who you’re shooting.  You have to shoot, but…it could be a guy with a gun shooting at the guy with the gun who was trying to shoot THE guy with THE gun.

And you have to live with that.  Every day.  For the rest of your life.

The cops I talked to were well aware of this.  And did not want to be “that cop.”

And, I’ve said this before, too:  not one person who had a gun in any of these situations has ever actually shot back at someone who was shooting people.  Even here in AZ where it seems as if you can damned near carry a cannon on your back if you want to.

Not one.

Here in AZ people did wrestle the gun away from the guy who shot Gabby Giffords and so many others—including a beautiful child.  But some of those people knew how to disarm that weapon because they own guns and carry guns.

They didn’t run and get ‘em outta the car or their purses or anything like that.

And if a crazed gunman didn’t get shot fulla holes in Arizona…it ain’t gonna happen anywhere.

It’s kinda like that argument that rich people shouldn’t pay taxes because they’re the “job creators.”  We don’t seem to be seeing many of those jobs being created right now, before those taxes go up, do we?

We also don’t see a lotta people who carry guns shooting the bad guys while our currently inadequate gun laws are still in place, either.

Ah, but…Piers roared last night.  On behalf of all of us who are just as fed up with hearing the same old same old.

And you know…for a few very tense but eventually very soul satisfying moments…

I think I was properly in love.

What a MOMENT this was! I was galvanized--go Piers!
Excellent. Go Piers!
Who was the first person who went all bobble-headed and said "nailed it" with that inflection and everything? I don't even know. "Bob's your uncle," I'm going to use it anyway.

Yes, Piers has grown some here. Perhaps, "breaking news."

Mad.

In a word.

Could someone ask Jake to fix the repeat comment thing?

(Sorry.)
Yes Keka, hated the Dalai interview (except where he exposed the goofy DL's affection for the Bush clan... hm... revealing, ) but apart from Piers's usual shtick, yes... it did seem like he truely did... roar ...

...and bully for him, that !
Felt the same way you did when seeing that Show. That guy made me sick with his statistics. Statistics won't help this problem. Hunters, Cowboy Wannabe's & Gun Collectors have to find a NEW Hobby! R
Hi Keka --missed you since have not been here much. I have a Gun Story that is only tangntially related. Actually it would make a better column but here to say:

I don't watch TV except during elections and then msnbc. But. U=I swear this to be true: I was visiting a sick friend in her living room and in her bedroom we heard the TV go very loud. And there was Piers Morgan having a rage attack (for good reason as you just taught me.) Since I never watch CNN I said to my friend, what is with TV? is louder the better? She was too sick to respond but you just clued me that I watched him for a few seconds in analogous mode. R
