Mamma Mia Who Knew?

Rate: 14 Flag

I finally watched the entire movie tonight – that’s right – the much maligned Mamma Mia movie.  Who knew one could be so inspired by the epitome of schmaltz?  I’m not even embarrassed to admit it – Mamma Mia the movie inspired me.

All I want in the entire world right now is Meryl Streep’s energy and flexibility.  She’s about 10 years older than I, and if I don’t move on it NOW, I will be older and less energetic every year and have no hope of ever feeling as good as she made me feel in this movie.   I’ll be a moribund couch potato in 10 years.  I am pretty much a couch- and computer-potato as it is; I can’t tolerate how much worse I am going to feel soon!

Granted, Ms. Streep (and her co-star, the amazing Christine Baranski), have had the advantage over me all these years.  A very important part of their profession requires them to exercise and stay fit, and they are paid handsomely for their talents and get advantages I can’t hope for in the quest for fitness.  Make no mistake, I am not talking about diet and thinness, it’s all about stamina, energy, flexibility, and sheer pizzazz now that they (we) have reached that certain age.  Sure, they also have nips and tucks but I don’t want to look like them so much as I want to feel like them.  And move like them.  And flex like them. Sigh.

Towards the end of the movie, I got off the couch and started dancing to see how close I was to keeping up.  This, however, rather shocked my body that had been potato-ing with a few drinks for several hours, and I quickly needed a smoke break.

After the movie, I started playing my DVR recording of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert.  Oh holy Mom did I feel old when Crosby, Stills, and Nash opened THAT show.  I actually felt better about my energy level after watching them.  Disclaimer: I’ve already seen the end of the show where the Boss blows me away once again with his 60 year old energy level and was thusly extremely biased against the old guys opening the show.  U2 and Mick Jagger are in the middle so let’s see what that brings. Oh I see Sting is still looking and sounding damn fine.  He and Trudy have  released TMI about their tantric sex life though, in my opinion.

To sum it up, if I don’t get off my butt, get back to yoga, exercise my heart more regularly, cut back on the White Russians, and oh yeah, quit fucking smoking,  I am going to hate myself in 10 years even more than I do now! Help!

I'm with you on this, sista! Time to move the bones and remember how to LIVE!
Don't feel so badly! I've seen Mama Mia, the Broadway Play, live, five times! Saw the movie once. Both are very fun, musically contagious and high energy, as you so aptly described. I know how good dancing is for the body and it is a fabulous cardio and full body workout! Plus, it's so much fun and you can dance to whatever kind of music that rocks your booty! You go girl!
I loved this movie! So fun with so much energy. I love to dance maybe it's time to find a dance class. You go girl!
myspyche it's all about moving which then gets ya living isn't it? BTW I can't elieve I lived in Texas too!

Cathy, thanks for stopping in dear girl. I am not surprised that you too are moved by Mamma Mia. I almost saw the play in NYC but it got too late too get the tix. Funny, my sweetheart wanted to see the play, but wouldn't watch the musical movie. He doesn't know what he's missing!

LL2, we both need to try to dance more often me thinks. I will if you will xo
*Runs in with the paddles after a little bunny bingo* Awww... this isn't dead. Meryl Streep and Abba? Sounds like a party to me. I know how you feel though, I was exhausted just watching her dance around.
Care to dance, Kelly? xox
Care to dance, Kelly? xox
Done Cindy thanks. And do watch the movie, it's sheer fun.

Robin, I am always up for a dance, or two!
Is this a New Year's resolution? Good luck and stay happy, Nancy.
We might have to discuss this! I haven't seen it, but LOVE ABBA.
You have given me a reason to see the movie ;0)
Good morning Lea, Dorinda, Alison, and Janie! If you love ABBA, you can't go wrong with this movie - just be prepared for the idea that not all of the actors (who did their own singing) sound much like ABBA :-)

I'd like to resovle to get in shape, but so far that hasn't worked over the last 20 years or so! Maybe I have to buy Mamma Mia and replay it daily.

Janie I taped the Hall of Fame show on HBO. But the strangest thing happened. Last week, the ONLY part of the show I caught was a final 50 minutes or so with Bruce Springstseen and the E Street band singing and playing with various artists (Billy Joel for one, it was a wild night!). That's when I went back and set the DVR to record the whole thing, but the version I have now doesn't HAVE that Springsteen segment AT ALL.
I get all tingly when I dance to ABBA. Then I drop from exhaustion. ~R~
Get on up, girl, and dance! I do!
At 60 I decided I had had enough of my old life and am in the process of renovation! And just for the record, I am quite flexible....
Hope you're having fun!
Hi Chuck, thanks for the visit and the giggle :-)

Hi Sharon! I think you're very brave and your re-make seems to be gong very well. Brava to you, maybe you'll inspire me too.
It was a joy from beginning to end...
That's exactly what it was Gary, pure joy :-)
