Like so many other websites, Salon has finally sold it's soul!
What do I mean by saying it's sold it's soul. Well it has nothing to do about the new design, which is glaringly in poor taste.
My complaint is that they have integrated all their "social content" ( read advertising and Spam ) into the website. It's not bad enough that they had pop-up advertising before. Now the advertising loads, whether you want to view it or not. So what's my problem with that, you say? The fact is that it bogs down your computer. The page never fully loads, because of all the advertising that also has to load, much of it animated. I have a broadband connection. The damned page still never fully loads! There is no way to navigate as the page freezes. ( this same thing used to happen on porno sites, which is why I now avoid them! ) Once I navigated to an article, the page could not finish loading. There was no way to leave a comment, because of the page not totally loading, the links no longer functioned!
I wouldn't mind it so much, but I get a daily e'mail link Open Salon every day. From this main page, it is almost impossible to get to OS! Thanks Salon!
Just in case you do not understand what I am talking about. When the page is loading instead of seeing " Salon, loading". I see in my sidebar that "ad-meld" is loading. Then I keep seeing user selective advertising, and even articles that evidently think I only watch gay websites! these are the result of their "integrated" advertising. To see what I'm talking about, visit this link!

Do you have the same problems that I have. When the page loads the little side bar says " loading, ads-meld" and the page never finishes loading. So the links to not work!
I don't mind the ads -- I'm inured. They have to defray costs. But, this redesign stinks of the artsy-fartsy desire to win a design award rather than feature an array of content. I find it hard to believe that anyone considered the metrics, and readership, of various sections in choosing what to spotlight. Also, while I enjoy some of the featured writers I don't really think their namesand beats are sufficient to drive the design. Don't like it much, not at all. Will try to get used to it. Don't see me being a "core" member next time it's time to reup.
