Bio
Once again it's time for a change, figured I'd use a real pic of me. Of course this one is much more pleasant, than how I look these days. Politics, Gay Rights and the Environment are still very much on my mind. I'm still fighting those evil Lawn Nazis', and I have all but given up on the intelligence of the average American, but will continue to express my opinions -- over and over and over. Until it makes you or me sick, whichever comes first! Hopefully someone will listen!

Goodbye Salon!

Rate: 12 Flag

Well, today was the last straw.  I unsubscribed from the Salon main page.  It is totally impossible to read anything on Salon, or to even try and contact them!  Every time I go there, my browser crashes and I have to restart my computer.  Don't they understand about advertising, and how it slows down things?  What idiots constructed this website?  Well they lost one reader, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Hopefully they won't decide to improve Open Salon.  I would hate to have to give it up!

I just looked at big Salon after reading this.

HOLY KRIPES!

It looks like someone's high school project after a few joints. A postmodern nightmare if I have ever seen one. Alas.
Yeah, I hate the new look and I have trouble getting to some of the stories and especially the comments.
Who could blame you? r.
To all, thanks for the comments!
It's all those damned video adverts that overwhelm my browser. The page never finishes downloading, because of the damned ads that keep popping up constantly. Don't these people know what malware is?
Very often crashing mine as well (OS). Seems to coincide with the flood of spam on the weekends but not always. Have to cleanup cookies/browsing once in a while too, all in all, really have to wonder what it's worth being a participant with such treatment (apart from the pathetic editorial bias) etc. Very little holds me here, have to say. Saludos.
Kenny, I have had problems with Big Salon since the new format came online, too. I can't view or leave comments. What's strange is other people can leave comments. A couple of staffers from customer service wrote back, but haven't fixed the problems I am having so far. Maybe you'll want to check back in a few weeks and see if the Big Salon problems are fixed by then.
Inverted and designanator,
Where my problem arises are the automatically generated video advertisements. As soon as the page starts to load, I end up with at least five of these going on simultaneously. They in turn bog down my computer memory and crash the browser.
posted as much.. yuck
Well I didn't have any trouble and I can't explain why, because I'm limping along on an old Lifebook going on 6 or 8 years with 760M of RAM. FB Games hate my computer, but Salon went okay, even with the advertising.

I have to disagree with "another steve s" though. It does NOT look like a high school student web page designed by some stoned kid. A stoned 16 year old would do a much cooler color presentation. That's way too monotone overall for someone stoned.

Didn't crash for me or cause undue overload. Still, I don't go to Big Salon very often. There are so many interesting voices here on Open Salon.
Hmmm.. just dropped in there, no problems here either, even clicked on one of the articles (that got an Olay popup but it was easily enough eliminated :). Actually it looks like they're trying for a magazine cover and inside page combination to me, didn't even mind the color scheme. I'm running a seven year old HP tower with XP Media Center, but I do have DSL.

Your concerns though are why I build web sites the way I do, with zero 'bells and whistles' - there are still folks in this world with dinosaur systems and dial up modems, I don't think it's fair to create an internet that not everyone can access just because it's 'new high tech and looks cool' :-/. But then that's just me ;).

Rated for where no man has gone - and probably never will.
I didn't even know about the change and I hardly ever read Salon, but looked at it now. You did good. :o)

R♥
I rarely go there, Kenny, and haven't seen the site since the changes. Now I have no interest in even checking it out. Thanks for the warning.
It's ugly, clumsy and hard to use. I'm going there a whole lot less since the change. (Have to go for Elle on Monday mornings, though.)
Stop the blinking! OMG that's annoying. It makes OS look so sedate and homey.
Oh. I meant Nelle.
I have complained several times to big solon about the site freezing my machine to no avail (and no response). It’s very predicable. The first time I enter Solon after a restart it will freeze my computer for exactly 55 seconds then it comes alive and works fine, until I restart. I’m sure its some add on that is being downloaded but what ever it is it needs to be fixed.

Think about how many people simply assume that their computer is frozen for good and cold boot it so the next time they click on Solon its frozen again – Time to go buy a new computer I guess (gasp).

The Verizon web site does the same thing and I have complained to them as well with no response.

It’s simply not acceptable, for ANY reason, that a web site will bring the entire Windows 7 OS to a grinding halt.
ONE YEAR LATER
And Salon still locks up my Windows 7 computer. It actually manages to stop the clock on the computer. Something that I thought was impossible.
Still the first time I call Salon it locks up for 15 seconds then its OK.
Still not acceptable for a web site to do that.
Still crap...
