I've been an editor at Salon in various capacities since January 2000. You can reach me at: kerry at salon dot com. I post Open Calls on my Twitter feed, too (kerrylauerman)

You can now search on Open

Rate: 2 Flag

You can now search all the content (or just the names, posts, tags you specify) on Open Salon. There's a search bar at the top of every page.

On the results page, we also give you a variety of ways to slice and dice the information.

More news and updates:

• You can now Blockquote text -- setting off text as an indented block quotation or for other material you would like to set off, as I'm doing with these next several paragraphs.
The html code is pretty simple, just use this:

blockquote

• The problem some of you reported with images not aligning properly should be fixed.

• The bug that prevented some of you from changing your password? Also corrected.

Check it out -- and report back in the Comment field below. We're very excited to have a beta Search up and running, and we're eager to hear your thoughts.

great, but honestly, is it just me? I cannot seem to get spell check on posts, comments yes. Have I turned something off?
The search feature is a great addition to the site. I was wondering if there are plans to also make the comments searchable in the future?
We actually don't have any spell-checking programs installed on Open Salon at all. We'd like to offer it somewhere down the road.

No immediate plans to make Comments searchable, but I'll look into that, Designamator. It's a good question.
Odd, cause I get a spell check on comments. Thanks for the answer. The search is dynamite.
Kerry, you may not want to do this because of expectations vs implementation, but is there a chance to see a general timeline--what you have targeted for goals on features? Also, is there a general idea when it would go out of beta? I need to make a decision on where to keep a post or delete it when we change from beta.

I forget if I had mentioned before, but I'd like to see a page list of comments made on my blogs, and a page list of comments I've made, simply to help my poor memory on where and what I had said. It's good to be able to track a conversation too, instead of burrowing down into places where you feel likely you've commented but can't quite remember.

Thanks so much for all your help in shepherding us in the right direction.

The spell check feature must be a Firefox issue. It works for me in comments, but not when I'm composing a blog post.
thanks for the update, but according to all who try to send me messages, I still don't exist!
thanks Blake, I was starting to feel like I am losing it, but then again....
My dear Monsieur Lauerman ~

Thank you for the marvelous effects and geegaws on the bloggery! With all the cybertraptions and what-have-you I've been making a spectacle of myself!

My only difficulty — perhaps a trivial one — is that I cannot seem to discern who is who! Why do the author names differ from the usernames? In one format one gets the username, in another the author name — and I have yet to match the two of them up from memory!

Just seems an added layer of confusing nonsense.
Some quick notes:

Public beta launch is coming fast -- I'll blog about this either today or tomorrow. But if you're deliberating about keeping posts up or not, I'd urge you to make a decision soon.

Spell-checking: Yes, Blake's got it. Some browsers do it for you, but we don't.

Names vs. screen names: I agree, it's needlessly confusing. We've given the screenname option primarily for members of our Communities (Table Talk, Well) and our Salon letter writers, who have pre-established identities or handles. But on Open, we really do prefer that members use two names, and preferably their own -- unless they're purposely creating an alluring persona, Monsieur.

Sandra: You've exposed a bug in the system, and we're trying to figure it out. Someone will be in touch with you directly about this.
Sorry for the redundant redundancy, but do you have a handle on when we can expect the site to feed us cookies? Unless it's just me, even though I dutifully check the Remember Me box, I still have to sign in every time I sign on and often again after I've been idle for even a few minutes.

Thanks for the updates, the rollout of new features and your hard hard hard work.
who will be able to read, blog and post comments when it goes to the next step?

I need to know to determine which posts to leave up.
