Ads on Open

Rate: 12 Flag

A few members  asked what sort of advertising plan we have  for Open Salon. Social content sites are relatively new; there's no obvious path toward making money on them. (And to state the obvious: In these times as much as any, we need to make money.)

We're going to continue to run sponsorship programs on Open, as we did earlier this year when the education non-profit Strong American Schools sponsored weekly Calls and spotlighted related features on the Open cover, and popped up around the site in the different listings, always identified as a Proud Open Sponsor. This sponsorship program continues later this week when Shell comes on board, and we'll continue with more sponsors into  the new year. We're excited about the sponsor program because we think it's integrated into what the site already does -- creating discussion around issues that are important. We're proud they want to sponsor Open members' great work, and we're really grateful for their support. That's not to says we won't consider other ways to advertise on Open Salon in the future, but the sponsorship approach is the one we're offering, and most excited about.

Also, we are actively planning ways for members to host advertising programs on their Open blogs in the new year, if they want to, as well. That way you would be able to make money based directly on the amount of traffic that comes to your blog page. It requires some buildout, and there's much more on that to come, but wanted to make sure members know that's high on our priority list, too.

Advertising Open: Some of you might also have noticed spots promoting Open Salon on IFC (they're also running, occasionally, on Salon.com). It's through a partnership we have with IFC, and they run throughout IFC's programming and highlight our featured weekly Open Call. They're cool little spots -- if you catch one, let me know what you think. I'll also try and find a link to one, so you can check it out.

You deserve a happy holiday break.... :)
As a publishing-type person, I feel compelled to point out that the initials of Proud Open Sponsor are P.O.S.

Otherwise, more power to Salon if money can be made by this model.
The same Shell that was partially responsible (and some say played a major role) in the hanging of Nigerian poet and environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa on November 10, 1995? Not sure I can still be a member here if that's the case.
Good luck with this and future plans. The business model for Open Salon has to make sense - make money. No one expects it to be a charity.
If it makes the site stable and happy, I'm all for it!

Thanks for keeping this place up and running.

Actually, I thought Strong American Schools was poorly integrated as a sponsor. I found myself skipping straight over it rather than zooming in on it because of the funny way they showed up in the list of activities. I hope they thought it was successful, since funding is good, but my sense was that it seemed like it could have done better. I also think it had an odd presentation with the flags flying the American flag beneath another flag—I know people who that put off immensely. You might take advantage of the blog format to get periodic feedback/suggestions on how to improve the quality to us and the quality to the funder of participation. There are a lot of good ideas and idea-makers here, and some of us will talk anyway, but many won't unless you ask them.
Didn't I see an ad on the Current TV network, too?
all sounds good. thanks for keeping us posted.
"...make money based directly on the amount of traffic that comes through your blog page..."

Kerry, I'm all for exploitation.

Also, I once heard mentioned "spiders." What is this? And why do I want it on my blog?
Clearly many writers would like to monetize their efforts and OS has quickly become a platform where such could occur. My concern is that with a marketplace comes marketers which may require some to put out the "No Solicitors" sign.

I fear the uniqueness of OS will yield to commerce rather than integrity of vision...already the cracks are showing. I think the sponsorship approach to pay the bills makes sense but personal blogs ads will certainly change the dynamic of the community.

Food for thought...read "The Starfish and the Spider"...the unstoppable power of leaderless organizations.

Basically the message is that when OS fails to yield to the people another organization will be born to take its place.

I applaud your transparency.
::raising of eyebrows:: THE Shell? A corporation that has been taking money from people right and left and doing some very bad things worldwide? yuck.

Hmm. Well, I know you guys want this to be a success, but let's hope you come out of it with your souls.
A big discount at Shell's gas stations for all OS members??
Here's an idea for a revenue stream: gather some of these posts into quick print books/magazines that you can sell (great airport reading).
thanks for the update and all of your efforts, Kerry. In my view, OS has been, and continues to be, a pretty great experiment.
From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_surrounding_Royal_Dutch_Shell

Shell has been criticised by some activists for seeking to benefit from the regime change in Iraq. The NGO "Hands off Iraqi Oil" has charged that "Shell has been working closely with the occupying powers to create a framework that will allow multinational companies to take control of Iraq's oil." And that they lobbying of Shell and other oil majors "...could result in multinational oil companies controlling and profiting from most of the country's oilfields for up to 20 years."

Shell is a major partner in a controversial oil exploration project in the Beaufort Sea off the northern coast of Alaska and 15 kilometres from the protected Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The project has been opposed by environmental protesters who have questioned the content of environmental impact assessments, stated that the project has been rushed with inadequate consultation and who have launched legal challenges against the scheme.

Shell Oil is also active in Sudan and therefore complicit in the genocide of the people of Darfur.

Lots of smart remarks. Quickly. . .

Emma/Odette: We do have an open-door advertising policy, (same as Salon.com, of course).

Kent: Thanks for the feedback. The level of engagement with SAS was pretty remarkable, I thought, but we're always looking for feedback, and suggestions from improvement. (I'm not sure many sponsors will be looking to having their logos re-evaluated on Open, though -- unless that's what they expressly come her for!)

Alan: Salon has an intermittent partnership with Current. Not sure the state of that, but various Salon columnists appear there from time to time.

Elektra: Spiders could refer to different things. But I suspect what that person meant was that you want your blog page optimized to best draw in the Google, Yahoo, and other "spiders" or web crawlers that scan the Web and improve your ranking in search results. We spend a great deal of time optimizing Open -- but this is a great subject for a future blog post!

Harry: Point out to us when we think we're losing our vision -- seriously. And thanks.

angrymom: It's a good idea -- I'd love to have an Open collection in my hot little hands right now because. . .

I'm about to head out for a short vacation, back mid-next week. Thanks to all the rest of you who piped in (screamin, High, MTN, Elliot, Lulu, Dave, Design'r, Sandra, et al). I'm closing this thread momentarily not to squelch debate, but because I'm heading out.
