Upgrade: My name is URL

Rate: 41 Flag

Last night, we made a long-planned upgrade to give your blog an  individualized Internet address (URL) based on your display name. Gone will be the charmingly impersonal "user_blog.php?..."  replaced by: http://open.salon.com/blog/YOUR DISPLAY NAME

The posts on your blog will have more content-specific URLs, as well. We'll be lifting the headline from posts to create the URL.

Why are we doing this?
For a variety of reasons, the big ones being:
• Personal URLs have been a top-requested feature
• It should streamline some technical issues on our end
• It will help your search results.

Don't expect a traffic surge overnight, but including searchable content in the URL is one of the most basic ways for you to get better pickup in the search engines -- and better traffic for your posts. We're always looking for ways to make Open as optimized for great search results as possible.

Here are some answers to some likely questions you may have:

Will links to old Open Salon URLs still work?
Yes, they'll work just fine. The old gobbledygook URLs still work, too -- they're just hidden from the public eye by the newer, easier URLs.

What happens to all of my previous posts?
New URLs will be generated for those.

What happens if I change a headline after I publish it?
The URL will not change after you first publish the post. You can change your headline, but it won't be reflected in the URL.

If I change my display name, will it be reflected in the URL?
No. We chose the Display Name for the URL because it was the name you chose as your public name. For new members, their screen names will be used for their URLs.

Do we need to change links from our web page?
thanks, I like the new URL. I noticed it late last night. It makes it much easier for friends to find my posts, much easier to tell them the URL.
Such a great change. I imagine if it had been announced in advance that you would have received 10,000 rants about why it was a bad idea. Great Job! Oh, and thanks for he hard work.
This is impressive. Thanks!
Kerry, thanks for this URLS upgrade. It will make searching post I have commented on easier. And also, thanks for your continued efforts to make OS a place to exchange ideas.

rated for change
Yay!

(thumbified for Urliciousness)
Thanks, Kerry, for all you do.
Kerry, this is such exciting news! Yay! That's great. The title of your piece is quite clever as well.

I'm a little too happy over this. I think I may make a martini and its 9:30 am. Your fault.
Sending you a virtual beer for this one. Many thanks. :-D
This is a remuneration of sorts, and a thank you gift, from OS to the people who spend their time and talents here.

Thank you!

Denese
Lisa: No, you don't need to change anything.

bbd, jk, bill, chicago, gmg, jodi, tom, M B, Bill: Thank you!

Beth: Never a bad time for a martini.
This is great! Thanks ya'll.
Great. I love it! A lot easier to direct people on the outside to our blogs.
Thanks so much, Kerry. All of you editors work so hard for us. I apreciate all you do and am happy to see any improvements. Keep up the good, highly rated work.
excellent stuff here. I would send you a good stout for it!!
Thank you, Kerry. It's very nice.

I promise to enjoy it ... and also no longer tease the sponsors. I've joined Grammar And Punctuation Fiends Anonymous. GAPFA. I think it will help.
Overnight magic. Many thanks and hope you get some sleep tonight.
Good job guys. Long time coming, but looks like you did it great!
More good stuff. Thank you.
Kerry, just noticed the change after reading your announcement. Thanks very much for the upgrade!
excellent. Thanks, Kerry and site team!
...but, one thing I've noticed Kerry is that it used to be easy to keep track of the progress of OS in terms of numbers by getting meta data about a post or a member. What is now missing is seeing what benchmarks we've passed in the number of blog posts made, with the meta data indicating the post name instead of it being the 112,000th post. Similarly, you see a person's name instead of the number indicating when they joined OS. Not that these are critical, and I think it's a much better trade off, but that data is now missing for those gear heads that like to see that sort of stuff.
Now that you mention it, Barry, we won't know when we go over the 200,000 mark with posts like we did with the 100,000th post. The only workaround on how long a member has been posting will now be looking at the date of their first post and getting an idea of how long they have been here by that method. Of course, there are some who joined, but did not post immediately, so this is not as accurate as the old numerical way that you talk about in your comment.
Hey, thanks (former Open tech whiz) Cash Coleman!

BBD: Good point -- but, those were fairly faulty milestones, which is why *I* never used them. Spam attacks inflated some numbers a bit, for example. But it would be nice if we could come up with more concrete numbers to share -- we'll work on that.

I should also give some credit to: Jerry for all the hard work coding this up, Jim for managing the transition, Rachel for testing it, and Thomas for the very clever headline on this post.
Kerry, it's nice you give props to the team. I've communicated a number of times with both Thomas and James and they've always been attentive and kind. It's a great team here.

I noticed though, in your comment just made that it changed from your first posting of it. Does that mean that comment editing is around the corner or did you just delete and repost to put the team member's names in bold?

Just curious.
Looks great, easy to remember, nice to search. Thanks for the change!
This adds so much to the professional appearance of our blogs. Thank you!
Good change. Well-executed. Good backward compatibility.

Thank you very much for not running the old posts through that awful transformation that happens when you click Edit on a post in Manage Posts. (If you don't now what I'm talking about, it reprocesses the text as HTML if it smells HTML in the resulting post, which is a total disaster if you try to edit posts like my CSS tutorial... I always have to submit edits to that from the original source because it is impossible to Edit using the conventional means. I'll send a bug report about this sometime.) Anyway, whatever technology you used for doing the upgrade was appropriately conservative and did not perturb my CSS tutorial.

Anyway, a fine upgrade.

Oh, and cool logo during the downtime, too. Very artsy.
that is way cool! thx!
Terrific! I just changed the blog URL at my website and on my email signature. Looks more professional now.
Oh this is good. Reminds me of a reverse "Secret Agent Man" theme song:

"They've taken away your number...and they've given you back your name."
Many thanks to you and the incredibly hard-working and patient Jim, Rachel, Thomas and Jerry. It's mighty impressive how the improvement rollouts appear so seamless... does anyone on the back end have any hair left?

Hope you guys all have a great weekend and take some much deserved down time.

Barry, low-number loyal betas can feature original blog numbers in our profiles, kinda android-like... Originally Known As Barry123 Before the URL Wars. (okay, I need more Daquil now)
Oh this is lovely. Thank you Kerry :-)
I noticed that after the upgrade, pictures that were plainly visible on the blog itself before are not visible now. They appear only after going to that specific post. Is this a temporary problem or did you somehow change the file size limitations to affect blog display features?
What Barry said--I used the numbers to get some idea of how many members were currently signed up, or how many posts have been posted, even if they were spam inflated. Not a complaint per se, but a note about something that would be nice to still be able to track.

And I can't believe I'm the first to say it, but your own URL for this post is great: "upgrade_my_name_is_url"
Marvelous improvement my good man!
Nothing better than an unexpected upgrade! Great! And much appreciated.
Kerry,

I know that it can be challenging doing upgrades like this and ensuring a smooth transition. Well done!

I just posted my first blog this morning on Salon, and had no sense of the old ways of the past. So it all looks good from here. I appreciate the constructive nature of the community. Seems like a thoughtful bunch of people.

I notice that shortly after my blog post was entered, it was tagged as "Editor's Pick" and was listed on the home page. I was impressed with how quickly it all happened. What is your process for reviewing blog posts?

Thanks, jay
Jay, some of your answers re EP and Covers can be found in Kerry's notes here: http://open.salon.com/blog/kerry_lauerman/2009/02/05/a_note_on_open_and_open

I would also suggest doing a search on "OS User Manual" an unofficial member generated posts and comments that make it easier to understand how to navigate the site, implement stuff, etc.

Welcome and congratulations.

Barry
Sometimes I think I'm glad that I have no idea what you just said, but I'm not sure. Thanks, I think.
My only interest is writing "posts" (what used to be called essays) that have a shelf life of more than 2.2 minutes. The rest is an irritation. I realize this makes me the most stupid person writing for OS.
that's nice, thanks, I was worried when I cdnt retrace one of my favourite blogs when he shifted to OS, had trouble figuring out how to re-do his link on my blogroll. this is easier to remember and understand, am a dummy at this you know, and this site looks really 'together-cozy-but-serious' nice. Like being inside a fun newsroom. I like the content too. Happy to be here :)
Links to old UIDs in posts made before the upgrade don't seem to work, at least not consistently, for example on this post.
i can no longer compose messages because the system doesn't recognize my user id number. hunh!!! i do like the idea of the new identifiers....

Thanks for the bone, Kerry, too bad there wasn't a little meat on it.

Like allowing us to block sender in the private mail, or expanding the allowed html in the TinyMCE editor, you know... something we could REALLY benefit from, as opposed to the bit of fluff the URL customization provides.

But I guess ego gratification is more important than members security or usability issues.
You folks are awesome.
I notice that some stat counters on my archived posts work, and some don't. No big deal.

What is wrong with breasts?
Thank you for the quick response. The UID problem seems to have been fixed.
Simpler display addresses are great. It wil be easier to find people based on their names.
Kerry,

When I try to upload my posts to my Facebook account, it's not loading so that you can click to the page here and the title doesn't show up either. That link is how I let some of my friends know I have something new up to read. Waaah!!!

Yeah, I know you want to hear anymore whining about as much as get bitten by a dog.
Suzanne, I just tried it with my latest blog post here, and it showed up fine on my FB page, with a choice of whatever image I wanted to present to FB out of the twelve, including my OS avatar. Seems ok for me.
of course I meant to write Susanne, sorry.
Nice... thank you, Kerry & Co.
