Note: Open outage last night

Rate: 14 Flag

We had a  problem with our database last night, and I'm very sorry to report that anything -- posts, comments, ratings, messages -- you might've done on Open Salon between 1:30 a.m.  to 7 a.m. ET (10:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. PT) is gone and cannot be retrieved.

This happened during a scheduled downtime to actually upgrade the system to prevent data loss, but there was a mishap. We're incredibly sorry for the inconvenience this surely caused  some of you.

I thought it was the Lithuanians.
So my stream of consciousness Pulitzer winning blog was lost forever? Oh, the humanity. Hey stuff happens Kerry, I understand. I think you guys do the best that you can to keep things up and running. No squawks from me.
so glad i sleep at night mr kerry.. course that means everything i dream about is lost in the morning when i wake up so i guess its the same thing right?
o. so it wasn't big government inspired censorship? it wasn't related directly to me? my blog was not the center of all things deleted?

um, could you just delete the relentless string of phone messages without listening to them? thanx.

p.s. i heart you, Kerry
That explains it! Between those exact hours I lost or misplaced 7 of my Conservative friends....
Just so you know it REALLY screwed up my bedtime reading last night...
I still get the down message when I try to access my blog. Was able to get to last post from front page while it was on the right-hand feed, but while at that post I couldn't get to any of my others. Still working on things? Or is this a glitch?
I like you because you include PT in your time designations. Stuff happens. All is forgiven.
Every understanding and thanks for this wonderful service! Hey it IS free!:)

But outages make it difficult to rely on OS as the homebase for a blog. That and the lack of built-in stats...

Those are literally the only hints of minor frustration I have had with this spectacular site.
I wrote a post that might have been of potential interest to the editors. Unfortunately, most of my posts generally don't seem to be, but since this one was a music review of a Jonathan Coulton show at SXSW Interactive, I thought it might have a chance to garner some notice. Even more unfortunately, I am at work and not in a position to re-post the content until considerably later.

Being in this business myself, I understand how these things happen. But I also understand how they may be avoided. If I weren't sleepy from having stayed up extra, extra late in order to make a timely post of the thing, perhaps I wouldn't be taking it so hard.

Maybe I should instead be focusing on the irony of a technical glitch deleting a post about "Code Monkey" Jonathon Coulton.
Myriad -- if you're still getting that message, it really should be a caching issue with your browser (the site is up and live now). You might want to quit out of your browser and re-open it. Or, hold down the shift key while hitting refresh.
Sheesh. I thought it might have been my post going up in flames...

Sorry you guys had such a headache.
So my Pulitzer-worthy post is gone forever? (sniff!) Actually, I'm full of it. I wasn't on here during those times but I feel bad for the people who lost stuff. :(

I'm glad the site came back up this morning. I wasn't sure how I was going to handle the OS withdrawal.
that explains how you somehow missed putting my latest post on the cover. have you seen it? brilliant, if i do say so myself.
Okay, right - I closed down last night w.o. logging out. Now that I have, things seem to be okay. Thanks.
when I found I couldn't log in I went through a HUGE depression.. had to call and wake my shrink up at 3am....... But you say you are sorry? Good enough for me.
OK, glad to know. When you said outage, I assumed that somehow OS had "outted" itself (I realize it is not in the closet, but that is how my mind read it) and I wondered about this because I have suddenly started getting snarky comments on my personal blog (not OS) and I suspect those people came from here... No big deal. But thanks for this update.
I thought it was one of the leftover Bushian ghouls infiltrated our socialist blog...whew, good to know it wasn't.
okay, I'm still having probs. Signed out, cleared history, restarted computer. Can get to blog from front page, but can't get from blog to front page and, haha, while at blog can't log out (get 'down' msg). And blurb on front page, upper right, about how we may be affected, takes me to list of old open-calls. Maybe cache and history aren't the same and I'm still being detoured to old paths? (sorry, a computer semi-literate)
get 'down' msg trying to get back to front page from any blog, and ditto trying to log out from any blog. I looked up cache on my computer and it says it's empty.
I had second thoughts about what I posted on Beth Mann's Slut post anyway...
Kerry - What a surprise to find the site down this morning. I think I speak for many, when I say I surely hope you don't have that hiccup again. OS provides a fantastic community for some incredible people.

Thanks
I found this out the hard way, but really, it ain't cancer.
Well, you must be having fun today! I think this is a vast right wing conspiracy because I am still down. All I get is a mop and a bucket when I click on my blog...yeah, I'm the cleaning lady...obviously, I'm not the only one. Myriad seems to be having a problem too, must be affecting those who are a witch and anyone who might be called words that rhyme with witch...I'm sure your techies have not forgotten all us little people and we will be accessible soon. Thanks.
Keep thinking this says "Open Outrage Last night" every time I see it.

Which also applies.
I'm glad that you have shown that your are human and not a perfectly running machines.
I wasn't able to open OS this morning (I'm in San Diego CA) and was worried that everything I wrote went up in flames. Luckily, I save them on a separate file on my computer.

I'm happy I didn't write during those hours. But it's great OS is back again!
P13 too funny :) I also "read" outrage and rushed here to see what had Kerry so worked up!
Glad I didn't have insomnia last night. I only caught the tail end of the outage this morning.

I blame the Artesians.

Well.

:-D
well it was down this morning - all morning and afternoon in fact, seven pm onwards everyhting seemed to be fine. nothings lost. except I still cant figure why I seee only three out of my 7 posts. when I come in thru "nabina" in search. have I written somethng I shdnt have? have I been 'flagged' wahtever tht means at OS ? I dont care abt the posts really they arent earth shattering things just troubled tht I dont get the logic of it - if I knew why I shd be happy and go away and not pester people wth quesns . thanks Kerry, I do like OS and spend a lot of time reading tramping around this space.
... but the big way it may affect you is that notice of this blog appears BOTH in the most read list and as a special note at the top of the rightmost column on the cover, so maybe you're that one unlucky soul that fell off the bottom of the most read list because it was full. ;)
Well, that explains that.
I guess the OpenSalon Back-up Server Farm that I posted about last week didn't kick in to prevent an outage. That darned billy goat must have chewed on the coaxial cable for Sunday dinner.
I just want OSers to know that during that time, I read all your posts and told you all how brilliant they were. So I'm completely caught up, even though there's no evidence of it.
For those of you still having trouble -- seeing that mop or down message -- Tech assures me that the site is live and working as usual. Sometimes, there remain to be pernicious caching issues (in the past, this seems to inordinately affect AOL or dial-up users). You might try re-booting your computer, or logging out of not only Open Salon, but also your service provider.
We think your baby is the most beautiful one on the whole Internet even if it pees on the carpet from time to time. Hope you got some sleep.
OHHhhhh.... THAT'S what happened!
I saw a comment and rating from a user on my recent blog, which has now disappeared! I was getting all upset with what on earth had happened to it.. I was going to reply!
Now I get what happened: thanks for letting us know
-_-
Persephone, Crystlle - every time I look at it, I see "Open Outrage". Might be a good open-call subject.

We witches (and maybe rhymes-with-witches) [hi Leonde] are still having trouble. I have no idea how to log out of my service provider...or how to get back in, and no amount of incense and chanting is working. However, my daughter next-door is expecting a visit from our local computer shaman tomorrow to get her on hi-speed, and I'll get him over to see if he can help... (I'm on DSL 'lite' and not AOL...)
I blame Dick Cheney.

(Well, he seems to be trying to duck responsibility for the economy. So SOMETHING has got to be his fault!)
Where's the outrage? Oh, outage. Never mind.
Drat. I really, really wanted to blame the Canadians...
so sorry, sunspots caused last night's experiment in mass recalibration to go not-smooth.
peace.
Well, that Jonathan Coulton post has been stitched back together better than ever. No, it wasn't cancer after all.
There was no shining bright light at the end of the tunnel and by the time I could hiccup I was reincarnated! Amoeba proteus this time around.... be seeing you all crawling around doing my thing ...
Is it true that equipment overheated when Joan placed her hat on top? Wasn't she getting rid of that thing? Thanks Joan
Kerry - The problem may still be happening. I click on my blog, or
the cover and get the "Database missing" window. Just happened
twice. I click again and I'm back to normal (whatever that is)
All I was doing was blog whoring anyway...
Whew!! Am I glad my post threatening w and dick was expunged before I got visited by the fellas from Homeland Insecurity.
Geez, glad I read this, I thought a couple of people had deleted my comments and couldn't for the life of me figure out what was offensive with them.
Padraig, I'm still getting mop-and-pail for View Blog and for Home from any blog. However, if I then hit refresh, I get to where I want to go. Bit of a nuisance, but I don't feel quite as lost now...
Oh lord, the HuffPo! That is a nightmare!

I really do believe that the last database change (and another coming up this weekend -- cross your fingers!) will go a long way toward making the site more reliable. We're building it for a strong, long future. And have I mentioned lately that we're still in Beta??
Finally, today, I can navigate around O.S. without encountering the mop-and-pail.

Waiting with some trepidation for what happens in next weekend's upgrade...

Padraig, how are you doing?
Shoot! All the good stuff is usually written during those hours!
