Upgrade alert! New navigation changes (Updated!)

Rate: 43 Flag
(Update: I've answered some questions in the Comments section, and will continue to read and respond today. Thanks for all the thoughts, bug reports, etc! KL)

We're rolling out some long-planned upgrades to the site today that we're pretty excited about. The two big changes:

• Our "Friends" feature is evolving into "Favorites"

• Our cover navigation tool now lets you sort posts far more dynamically

Your Friends will soon show up on the site as your Favorites, like on this blogger's page:

  fave

We're changing this  for one big reason: We know from  your feedback and watching how you navigate the site that this feature works best as a way of bookmarking bloggers you are interested in following. (We also have heard repeated groans from many who didn't like the term "Friends" as a way of describing someone you wanted to read. We got it -- and agreed.)

We also think the name change works better with the new cover navigation, which looks like this:

nav

The Cover hasn't changed, and continues to show off the stories we've picked to display. But the other tabs are all substantially different. The Editor's Picks tab now lets you limit results by "Favorites," so that you can more easily see the posts we've highlighted from your favorite bloggers.  We've also added an RSS feed. But you'll see here that we're also displaying significant new information for each post -- the number of times a post has been viewed (i.e., a "hit"); the number of ratings it has, and the number of comments it has:

  ep

The Popularity tab is new, and lets you sort posts using three criteria  -- the Top Rated, Most Viewed, Most Commented. You can also dig deeper, sorting those categories by looking at just your Favorites' content, and also specific time frames (from 4 hours to a 1 month) to more easily keep track of great posts you might've missed -- or are rapidly catching fire:

pop

The Most Recent tab lets you breakdown the three elements we highlight in the Activity Feed -- new posts, comments, ratings -- and surf that data in much greater detail. You can also just monitor the  activity of your Favorites:

jkjkjk

This is the first round of  planned navigational changes that aim to give members and  readers easier ways to find good content -- and rely less on just our  picks. We're also making the site more transparent, so you can see all the same metrics we see.

Let me try and anticipate some questions -- and answer them, below:

Why don't the time intervals let us sort data longer than one month?

Any longer would tax our system, and slow down the site.

How far back does the Most Recent list go?

We show the most recent 1,000 activities (posts, ratings, comments)

Why are the results different from the lists (Top Rated, Most Viewed) on the cover?

The lists on the cover are not updated in real time -- they're often cached a few minutes. When you do your own sorts, those results will be as current as we can make them.

I hope you'll tool around and check it all out. I hope you find it as addictive as we do. Please let use know if you have other questions -- either through a message or in the comments below -- and we'll answer them as we can during work hours Thursday.

that looks cool.

Thanks.
The cover navigation sounds great -- more than I could've thought to ask for! Thanks!
WooHoo!!! Sounds good to me. I think I like it here. Maybe Ill stick around. Thanks Kerry. You can open your other eye now.
::GASP!::

It's like CHRISTMAS!

YAY!

(thumbified for making with the awesome!)
I was hoping for my own tab but I guess this will do...
Yay.... so far anyway.

My first look at the "popularity" tab was so enlightening. Dr. Amy, a frequent editor pick and cover girl, makes the head of the list of "most viewed" with only 1 rating and 5 comments.

Are you really sure you want this new transparency?

I'm not trying to be a troublemaker (that comes naturally), it just happens to be what I noticed in the first 30 seconds of checking out the new, and might I add fantastic, features.

Thanks Kerry and everyone behind the scenes.
Nice! Can't wait to test drive the new changes.

But.....while I have your ear: my mail is broken. If I click on INBOX from the pulldown menu, I get a very brief error URL and then get bounced over to the home page as if I'm not signed in.

Thanks!
can't be a bad thing....onwards and upwards
Looks great..
Thank you
Uh - forget that last comment. I must have clicked before the page finished loading and had my cookie crumbled.

*grins sheepishly*
Thank the Maker!

(That'd be whoever did the code)
Oh, no, something else to feed my addiction :)
Looks awesome.
Thank you!! Thank you! YEAH!!!
thanks! I'm definitely looking forward to trying it out.
Very nice enhancements, Kerry. How did you add these without shutting down the site for an hour?
Holy mackerel! I've just browsed through it and my head is spinning.

The only thing that's missing is a "Shameless" option so you can sort to find yourself anywhere in all those listings!

Actually, if we could "favorite" ourselves, that would work. But don't you go blind if you do that?
Tijo -- next time!

RIF -- don't *overestimate* the power of the Open cover. A number of members have grown substantial audiences on their own.

L. Lawson -- all nice ideas, thank you.

L. Lauerman -- thank our crack tech team, especially Jerry.

Silkstone -- in a future round of changes, individual (or your own) data will be accessible on their blog pages. We're hopeful we can roll it out soon.
woo hoo! We've come a long way. For those of us who've been around for a really long time (in OS time), it seems like these have been a long time coming, but they are here and I am grateful. Thanks to those who listen to input.
These changes look really exciting. I can't get mine to work though. Am I on double secret probation?
Thank you for listening.
Is it just me, or is the Activity Feed frozen?
Nice job, Kerry thank you. And I agree most of Larry Lawson's ideas are good ones too. rated :)
My comments feed is frozen.

Thanks Kerry for listening. I hate that Friends thing.

How long has Larry Lauerman been here? I guess I missed this before.
How exciting! I don't know what to explore first. Thank you (all of you) for being so receptive to us.
Why can't I get most recent favorites? It reverts to "all."
Terrific! Thank you.
Is there a problem with making ourselves a "favorite" on our own blog to be able to access the info?
Front page feed seems to be frozen...
I have been paying for these same features on another site for five years now, so I am thrilled to no end. Thank you very much.

As writers, the hits and other information you provide are invaluable research tools when pitching an idea or writing a query letter.
I like most of it, but am still ambivalent about the "popularity" thing. Where's the tab for "the rest of you losers?"
Did we lose the ability to re order our favorites or to delete them? I believe some of the buttons were lost. Thanks
Great, super, fantastic!!! Thanks for improving this site. I can't wait to try out everything. Feels like Christmas in March (may not be PC fellpow bloggers but I said it anyway). Many thanks to the Eds and to techie Jerry.

Larry Lawson - good ideas, but damn man, did you even say thank you, eh???? Ahh, Canadians!!
Fabulous! Thank you.

Is it just me, or is anyone else freaked out about the Kerry/Larry thing? (insert smiley face here).
Love, love, love the changes! Kudos to you and the crew.
Now give me the ability to track more of my comment threads and I'll be happy, I swear ;) Also, it would be interesting to indicate, of the Editor's Picks, which ones had been on the cover. That's it, I'm done, really...
Great work, Kerry and Thomas, Jerry and Jim and Rachel! I go on vacation for a week and progress accelerates....hmmm.
Oh my. Looks like I'm going to have to get back in here and start posting again just to prove I ever existed in the first place. Nice work y'all.
thanks, kerry. i don't understand any of this, but i can't wait to check it out!! love love love
sounds good :) thanks
Thank you for all you do. Next time out? How about a right click on a member's name calls up a private mail dialogue box? that would be wonderful as a birthday gift in June :-)
I guess I don't understand how this works. Example -- I'm looking at this post:

http://open.salon.com/blog/pretend_farmer/2008/08/12/the_dysfunctional_gymnasts_fairy_tale

that is listed as "most viewed" in the "past month" on the fifth page. But the item was posted in August 2008. The "most viewed" page shows zero ratings and zero comments, but when you click on the post it actually has 6 ratings and 6 comments.

Also, how can this post

http://open.salon.com/blog/james_poyner/2008/11/19/pit_bulls_in_spamalot

have over 32,000 views, and just a couple of ratings and comments? (Not to mention that it's from back in November.) Is it possible that 32,000 people viewed it, and 31,996 decided not to rate or comment??

Am I missing something?
You are just too amazing. Addictive? You think? :0
Thanks, Kerry, this looks cool. How will I ever get any work done???!! For Jane, this blog helps search for your own comments, etc. on OS. http://open.salon.com/blog/phsfca/2008/12/23/tracking_my_own_comments_in_os
Kerry - this is change we can all get behind. Great job!

Thank- rated
Couldn't you have a tab for "most read and FORGOT to rate or comment" because I have a life or the phone rang? ;)
Great job!
"I'll Be There for You."

Theme from a prime time 8:30 p.m NBC sitcom, Thursdays,

FAVORITES

[Working title for FRIENDS was DEEP INSOMNIA....] 24,000,000 hits on Wikipedia (" ")

Thanks Kerry & Joan and co.
now, if you can get the 'recent' tab to work....
Mish - I wonder if the OS hit counter counts multiple hits from the same IP, especially the writer's. If so, some posts could get inflated artificially, though 32K hits are a lot of clicks. I discovered early on with statcounter that if I didn't control for my own IP that I was running up my hit count every time I visited my own page, which was pretty often at first.

Kerry - Don't underestimate the power of the open cover to promote new or undiscovered writers (and I don't mean to suggest that you do). I know it helped launch my viability here. I don't think I overestimate it, so much as question the motivation behind the choices sometimes. As a former editor I understand the dilemma you face in executing a strategy, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy watching it unfold. I'm not privileged enough to know what role promoting ___ plays in the strategy.

I really do wish you and OS success. And thanks for calling me RIF.
Good work Kerry. Can comments RSS be far behind?... I don't think so!
I appreciate the effort to respond to some of the requests from users. There are definitely some glitches, though. The Most Recent has a huge gap in it--it skips a day's worth of posts. Ironically, I was paging through it when the switch over occurred. Never did get to see what happened on March 24!
Great stuff! can I also request you look into adding a way to follow people via their comments? I've seen it on other sites; even on Amazon, after you read a book review, you can read "other reviews by this guy". Some of the comments I read make me want to read more comments by a person. It's amazing what people can do with two lines!!
Interesting changes.

Will you eventually be migrating the new metrics results to the individual blogs?

I ask be cause I notice on my blog that my Most Read posts don't coincide with Most Rated or the post with the most comments. Which means, a lot of people are reading my posts but not rating or commenting.
Thanks to you all! Very cool improvements.
I really like the new set-up, but was wondering if there's a way to find out how many hits a post has without scrolling down the list of most recents or editor's picks?
Maybe someone said this already, but I'd love it if the "recent updates" of friends/favorites was a bit longer. When I have a lot of bloggers I like to read, sometimes things slip by me.
Great stuff here, Kerry!
Thanks tech team!
The changes sound great in theory, but something is seriously screwy with the operation. I cannot go backwards in the "Most Recent" lists beyond a certain point, which changes, but basically returns me to the same page over and over again.
My first-ever OS Post groaned was triggered by a Wall Street Journal story about the agonies of "defriending" people at various social networking sites. I can't tell you how pleased I am to see OS ditch the "friend" tag and all its silly linguistic derivitives -- further proof of what a cool and responsive site this is. Many thanks.
Thanks to all -- answers to a few specific Qs:

Mishima -- It's entirely possible for an old story to show up high in the Most Viewed rankings again. Happens all the time -- one reasonably big link from another blog or publication can breathe new life into a long-dormant post. As for rating inconsistencies -- there are a few glitches with older post displays that we're looking at, but think will be sorted out soon.

On this question: "Is it possible that 32,000 people viewed [a post], and 31,996 decided not to rate or comment?" Absolutely. A lot of the biggest traffic-getters here will draw audiences from many places, or a big single link (DIGG, Reddit, say). Readers coming from those places aren't necessarily Open members. If a piece doesn't make a particular splash on Open, but catches fire elsewhere, it's entirely likely that they will have high reader numbers but low ratings because only Open members can rate a post.

Trudge: "Will you eventually be migrating the new metrics results to the individual blogs?" Yes.

Shaggylocks: "I 'd love it if the 'recent updates' of friends/favorites was a bit longer." You can now look at your Favorites activity in much greater detail on the cover nav -- each Tab allows you to filter the recent posts/comments/ratings/Editor's Picks/Top Rated by just Favorites.

Mumbletypeg: "I cannot go backwards in the 'Most Recent' lists beyond a certain point, which changes, but basically returns me to the same page over and over again." This is a bug we're working on. Should be fixed shortly.
There is so much flexibility in these changes. My RSS feeds on all the people I like here was actually freezing my computer on refresh. I'm going to turn them into "favorites" and use the new filtering tools. And there's still the old school method of following comment trails and selecting "all" in the filtering. Please tell the crew thanks.
I like the idea of following people whose posts I enjoy by using the Favorites function. Is there a different way to identify and group people who have added me as a Favorite and like to read mine? Thanks! HB
thank you Kerry!! and to all the staff and colleagues!.....
But Kerry - this is a follow-up to Mishima's question - how can a post from November show up in a list that is driven by when the post was created, and the limit for that is within the last month? Something is off...
Donna wrote: "But Kerry - this is a follow-up to Mishima's question - how can a post from November show up in a list that is driven by when the post was created, and the limit for that is within the last month? Something is off..."

Popularity lists are not driven by when posts are created. They are lists of all posts on Open Salon rated by activity (views, ratings, etc.) during a particular time period. If a piece from November shows up in, say, a Most Viewed list for the past week, it means that post has suddenly gained a new audience in the past week.
I just looked at the most read in the last four hours list, and it has things on it that are over a day old. Has that been changed so that it's no longer what's been most read that's been posted in the last four hours?
Ah, thanks for the clarification, Kerry. I think the wording in the UI could use some tweaking, then:

Posted by [All] in the past [day]

looks to me like posts that were created in the past day...
Favorites...much better.
Oh no, I can no longer brag about being a friend of Bill Maher! It was nice while it lasted.

I do like the changes though.
YOU'RE UNBELIEVABLE....
Hi Kerry,

First, great job on the redesign. I haven't been here all that long but even I can see the improvement.

Not to get too picky about it, but you asked, so... the email notifications still say "To view ALL of your friends, click here (or copy and paste the URL into your browser)" The first reference was changed to "favorites" but this one slipped through I think.

Yeah, I know... too picky :)
thanks for all the work on the site
Good changes, but the site is still trickle down. You pick bloggers. They get massive views. They get vey high ratings just on the basis of those views. Maybe ratings should be numbers. Average rating.

I don't know. It's like anything in publishing or entertainment. Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears could sell a lot more books than any of us, just because people know who they are and get massive coverage for going to bars with no panties.
these are great changes, Kerry, thanks!
Does this mean I have no friends anymore? Great, just great.

I guess I have no date for the prom either?
