We're rolling out some long-planned upgrades to the site today that we're pretty excited about. The two big changes:
• Our "Friends" feature is evolving into "Favorites"
• Our cover navigation tool now lets you sort posts far more dynamically
Your Friends will soon show up on the site as your Favorites, like on this blogger's page:

We're changing this for one big reason: We know from your feedback and watching how you navigate the site that this feature works best as a way of bookmarking bloggers you are interested in following. (We also have heard repeated groans from many who didn't like the term "Friends" as a way of describing someone you wanted to read. We got it -- and agreed.)
We also think the name change works better with the new cover navigation, which looks like this:

The Cover hasn't changed, and continues to show off the stories we've picked to display. But the other tabs are all substantially different. The Editor's Picks tab now lets you limit results by "Favorites," so that you can more easily see the posts we've highlighted from your favorite bloggers. We've also added an RSS feed. But you'll see here that we're also displaying significant new information for each post -- the number of times a post has been viewed (i.e., a "hit"); the number of ratings it has, and the number of comments it has:

The Popularity tab is new, and lets you sort posts using three criteria -- the Top Rated, Most Viewed, Most Commented. You can also dig deeper, sorting those categories by looking at just your Favorites' content, and also specific time frames (from 4 hours to a 1 month) to more easily keep track of great posts you might've missed -- or are rapidly catching fire:

The Most Recent tab lets you breakdown the three elements we highlight in the Activity Feed -- new posts, comments, ratings -- and surf that data in much greater detail. You can also just monitor the activity of your Favorites:

This is the first round of planned navigational changes that aim to give members and readers easier ways to find good content -- and rely less on just our picks. We're also making the site more transparent, so you can see all the same metrics we see.
Let me try and anticipate some questions -- and answer them, below:
Why don't the time intervals let us sort data longer than one month?
Any longer would tax our system, and slow down the site.
How far back does the Most Recent list go?
We show the most recent 1,000 activities (posts, ratings, comments)
Why are the results different from the lists (Top Rated, Most Viewed) on the cover?
The lists on the cover are not updated in real time -- they're often cached a few minutes. When you do your own sorts, those results will be as current as we can make them.
I hope you'll tool around and check it all out. I hope you find it as addictive as we do. Please let use know if you have other questions -- either through a message or in the comments below -- and we'll answer them as we can during work hours Thursday.

Thanks.
It's like CHRISTMAS!
YAY!
(thumbified for making with the awesome!)
My first look at the "popularity" tab was so enlightening. Dr. Amy, a frequent editor pick and cover girl, makes the head of the list of "most viewed" with only 1 rating and 5 comments.
Are you really sure you want this new transparency?
I'm not trying to be a troublemaker (that comes naturally), it just happens to be what I noticed in the first 30 seconds of checking out the new, and might I add fantastic, features.
Thanks Kerry and everyone behind the scenes.
But.....while I have your ear: my mail is broken. If I click on INBOX from the pulldown menu, I get a very brief error URL and then get bounced over to the home page as if I'm not signed in.
Thanks!
Thank you
*grins sheepishly*
(That'd be whoever did the code)
Looks awesome.
The only thing that's missing is a "Shameless" option so you can sort to find yourself anywhere in all those listings!
Actually, if we could "favorite" ourselves, that would work. But don't you go blind if you do that?
RIF -- don't *overestimate* the power of the Open cover. A number of members have grown substantial audiences on their own.
L. Lawson -- all nice ideas, thank you.
L. Lauerman -- thank our crack tech team, especially Jerry.
Silkstone -- in a future round of changes, individual (or your own) data will be accessible on their blog pages. We're hopeful we can roll it out soon.
Thanks Kerry for listening. I hate that Friends thing.
How long has Larry Lauerman been here? I guess I missed this before.
Is there a problem with making ourselves a "favorite" on our own blog to be able to access the info?
As writers, the hits and other information you provide are invaluable research tools when pitching an idea or writing a query letter.
Larry Lawson - good ideas, but damn man, did you even say thank you, eh???? Ahh, Canadians!!
Is it just me, or is anyone else freaked out about the Kerry/Larry thing? (insert smiley face here).
Now give me the ability to track more of my comment threads and I'll be happy, I swear ;) Also, it would be interesting to indicate, of the Editor's Picks, which ones had been on the cover. That's it, I'm done, really...

that is listed as "most viewed" in the "past month" on the fifth page. But the item was posted in August 2008. The "most viewed" page shows zero ratings and zero comments, but when you click on the post it actually has 6 ratings and 6 comments.
Also, how can this post
http://open.salon.com/blog/james_poyner/2008/11/19/pit_bulls_in_spamalot
have over 32,000 views, and just a couple of ratings and comments? (Not to mention that it's from back in November.) Is it possible that 32,000 people viewed it, and 31,996 decided not to rate or comment??
Am I missing something?
Thank- rated
Great job!

Thanks Kerry & Joan and co.
Kerry - Don't underestimate the power of the open cover to promote new or undiscovered writers (and I don't mean to suggest that you do). I know it helped launch my viability here. I don't think I overestimate it, so much as question the motivation behind the choices sometimes. As a former editor I understand the dilemma you face in executing a strategy, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy watching it unfold. I'm not privileged enough to know what role promoting ___ plays in the strategy.
I really do wish you and OS success. And thanks for calling me RIF.
Will you eventually be migrating the new metrics results to the individual blogs?
I ask be cause I notice on my blog that my Most Read posts don't coincide with Most Rated or the post with the most comments. Which means, a lot of people are reading my posts but not rating or commenting.
Mishima -- It's entirely possible for an old story to show up high in the Most Viewed rankings again. Happens all the time -- one reasonably big link from another blog or publication can breathe new life into a long-dormant post. As for rating inconsistencies -- there are a few glitches with older post displays that we're looking at, but think will be sorted out soon.
On this question: "Is it possible that 32,000 people viewed [a post], and 31,996 decided not to rate or comment?" Absolutely. A lot of the biggest traffic-getters here will draw audiences from many places, or a big single link (DIGG, Reddit, say). Readers coming from those places aren't necessarily Open members. If a piece doesn't make a particular splash on Open, but catches fire elsewhere, it's entirely likely that they will have high reader numbers but low ratings because only Open members can rate a post.
Trudge: "Will you eventually be migrating the new metrics results to the individual blogs?" Yes.
Shaggylocks: "I 'd love it if the 'recent updates' of friends/favorites was a bit longer." You can now look at your Favorites activity in much greater detail on the cover nav -- each Tab allows you to filter the recent posts/comments/ratings/Editor's Picks/Top Rated by just Favorites.
Mumbletypeg: "I cannot go backwards in the 'Most Recent' lists beyond a certain point, which changes, but basically returns me to the same page over and over again." This is a bug we're working on. Should be fixed shortly.
Popularity lists are not driven by when posts are created. They are lists of all posts on Open Salon rated by activity (views, ratings, etc.) during a particular time period. If a piece from November shows up in, say, a Most Viewed list for the past week, it means that post has suddenly gained a new audience in the past week.

looks to me like posts that were created in the past day...
I do like the changes though.
First, great job on the redesign. I haven't been here all that long but even I can see the improvement.
Not to get too picky about it, but you asked, so... the email notifications still say "To view ALL of your friends, click here (or copy and paste the URL into your browser)" The first reference was changed to "favorites" but this one slipped through I think.
Yeah, I know... too picky :)
I don't know. It's like anything in publishing or entertainment. Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears could sell a lot more books than any of us, just because people know who they are and get massive coverage for going to bars with no panties.
I guess I have no date for the prom either?
