Quick notes on another strong month

Rate: 19 Flag

Just a quick report on February's traffic on Salon.

Monthly unique visitors (MUVs) hit 5.3 million, the second month in a row over 5 million, and charting a 24 percent increase over February 2010. Pretty good. We're off to a strong March already, and have a few  features planned that we're eager to unveil . . . stay tuned.

But first, in the next few days, Emily is going to post a an updated Open blogger guide, for those of you who want to see their posts migrate quickly  to Salon, or linked to from our cover. We want to do a lot more linking moving forward -- it's a way of tapping into the great resource that Open has become, and it's also way of driving a lot more traffic (and Adsense revenue) your way. I look forward to seeing what you think of Emily's post.

Finally, our five biggest posts from February 2010. (I'm particularly fond of the range here):

  1. What not to say about Lara Logan 209,845
  2. Middle-earth according to Mordor 190,781
  3. The leaked campaign to attack WikiLeaks and its supporters 162,185
  4. How 480 characters unraveled my career 113,679
  5. James Franco's Oscars of apathy 88,982

Good news is always welcome, Kerry. Looking forward to Emily's new blogger guide. Thanks for the update.
Thank you, Larry.

Kerry. *as she turns beet red*
You may be about to experience the greatest "migration" ever! That of OS members and writers to other sites. It took over a minute for your page to come up after I clicked on it - and that is the fastest of any page today, so far. One took over 4 minutes. And ALL comments are taking over 3 minutes to complete.

For the first time since discovering OS, I am exploring other sites. It is amazing how many of the folks from here that I'm finding at other places. Many of whom are new to those sites. Many of whom, like me, are beyond frustration at OS. Like me also, they are spending more and more time on other sites.

Fix it Mr. Kerry -- Fix it soon! I'm ready to jump ship and I'll be part of a huge crowd who do so if this isn't fixed SOON!!
;-(
.
5.3 million hits? That's pretty good. Now, if you could only grab some fundage from those hits. Imagine, like 10 bucks a hit? Oh my lord, my friend, you could buy yourself a small island nation, where you could retire to, along with your good friend, Tinkerertink69!! Woooo!!!!

Heck, at 5 bucks a hit, you could still send Tink into retirement at the island, I wouldn't even bother ya for 1 minute with such a deal!!

I know, win-win for us all!!! :D

Oh well, a kitty can dream. Thanks for the update on Salon. One of these days I'll have to go over there and check it out.

Wow Kerry, this is very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome Fusun.
Glad to see the 'big hitters' on OS are making someone lots of dosh.

It's the variety that keeps people here and the arguments of course.

"Press send FRed(tm) - you've got wind Boy (yes I know they call it gas) "
Everyone is up in arms over Republican governors gutting wages. Meanwhile, HuffPo and OS have already achieved the ultimate Repugnant goal -- people so desperate they'll work for free. Not to fear, tho, we make it up on the volume.
Word!

But yeah Mr. Special K, please fix the slow thing... I mean have Emily fix it. Delegate whenever possible.

Luvya, tr ig

Great news, I was thinking of you today and wondering how we were all doing. Thanks for the update. Should we make this a pay to play to make it more efficient with respect to server issues, etc.? We could do a $25.00 annual fee and if it helped improve the overall performance, that might be a good thing right? Just an idea...
Glad to hear the good news, Kerry. Idea for capitalizing on the OS talent coming at you and Emily in email.
Kerry, it's great news to hear that MUV's are up over 2010 at this time...I look forward to reading about the new features. And the slow thing...pleez do something to fix it? It really sux. xox
Thanks for these updates.
You're doing a great job, Kerry! Thanks.
I appreciate the update, thanks.
Kerry, I read Mishima's post on the State of Spam on OS - since he's an appointed Spam Cop, I have to assume he's very familiar with this verminous problem and he presents some alarming stats in his report. What can you tell us, I'd be interested in hearing from you on this. It's alarming and would appear to be a true threat to the integrity of OS.
Thanks for the good news Kerry. The numbers are very reassuring!
The numbers look good...and I made it through a cross-posting to Salon without being eviscerated by angry commenters--I'd say that's a successful month!
That's fantastic news!! I am looking forward to hearing about the updates.

Eh, I don't buy it. You can use Open any way you like -- for free. If you want to let us crosspost your work on Salon -- great! If not -- fine! AdSense -- while no means to getting rich -- is something we installed so that you can make money if that's what you're trying to do here. And there have been quite a lot of examples of writers turning their Open work into paying story assignments, blogs and bestselling books. Nothing repugnant about any of that if you ask me.

To Gabby, Femme, others: I did read Mishima's post (http://open.salon.com/blog/mishima666/2011/03/09/the_current_state_of_spam_on_open_salon). It's typically smart and forward-thinking. I would say that we're pretty committed to keeping Open completely free, and that after we complete a migration of Salon to a new platform (mentioned in a previous post, and ongoing -- hopefully to wrap up . . . soon) we'll be doing the same thing to Open Salon. Our team is confident that will do a lot to curb the persistent spam issues -- and speed up access times considerably!

But . . . I would hate to predict when this will happen, because our tech team is incredibly cautious giving deadlines. We're also a public company, so I can't pop off on issues like that nearly as much as I'd like to. But I'm confident it will be worth the wait. Trust me -- I feel your pain with the site slowness. Our edit staff valiantly grapples with it throughout the day -- with clenched teeth and white knuckles. Once we migrate both Salon and Open onto a new platform, it will be unicorns and rainbows for all!

In the meantime, your patience is wildly appreciated.
Yay! I heart unicorns! xox
Congratulations of those fine sounding numbers. I am sure your all pleased with that count and look forward to more, as we all are. Cheers!
I hate the slowness, the last two weeks have been awful, but I am grateful I can write here.
That is all I have to say with a tip of the hat.

"Once we migrate both Salon and Open onto a new platform, it will be unicorns and rainbows for all!"

But Kerry, you and the Politicians have been telling us that for years!! We want the damn unicorns NOW!!!!!

Sheesh, rainbows I can buy for 2 bucks a dozen, if you want, I can give you the supplier!!!!

Anyways, I hope someday, you carry out on the promise of the unicorns and rainbows, I hope to still be around.

Seriously, I like Open, a lot! Enought to stick it out for the years. I don't want to go anyplace else, cause, really, I don't want to have to rebuild my readership of 12 and a half people!! Gawd, that'd be terrible!!!

Thanks Kerry - all the communication is appreciated. It would be great to also know what stories are wildly successful in a month for OS; we all deserve a little celebrating (although I know you can find it in stats). Keep up the good work Big Salon!

Kerry, great news.

I keep complaining about this, and so far, it's hasn't done much good. But when we post our blog on FB, let's say, a Salon logo appears. Before, it used to be a thumbnail from our post, which was far more enticing to possible readers.

I know it's supposed to be a way of marketing Salon, but I think it's faulty. Pieces are MUCH more likely to be passed around when they have an inviting photo, not a fairly bland "S" logo. It makes the pieces appear generic, not unique. It's just unnecessary advertising...and actually the kind that gets in the way of page views.

Now, more than ever, FB share and likes are becoming the way people move around work. We're LOSING people with that logo...you'll just have to trust me on this one, since it's what I do for a living.

Besides, we used to have thumbnail appears...why was it changed? Digg and numerous other sites use this technique and its not difficult to employ.

Bring the thumbnails back and you'll see even greater numbers. I promise.

Kerry - Thanks for the update. I'm with Tink on the subject of sticking around, because I haven't found any other site where I like the culture and structure of the place as well. I'm with Beth on the subject of thumbnails vs. Salon logo on FB postings. Looking forward to a faster big Salon and OS , hopefully in the not-too-distant future.
thanks for the wonderful outlet kerry
