Will Steven Spielberg Direct a Movie About Moses?

Rate: 5 Flag
Here's a news item that really sparks my interest -- Deadline.com is reporting that Steven Spielberg is on the verge of signing up with Warner Bros. to direct a "realistic' movie about the life of Moses.  The pitch seems to be that it will be closer to Braveheart than to Cecil B. DeMille's classic The Ten Commandments.

Personally, if they’re striving for realism, I hope they try to do it in the original languages — Hebrew and Egyptian — instead of English. That would be interesting and feel more historically accurate.

There will be an uproar if they strive too far from the story told in the Book of Exodus, but it will be fascinating if they avoid over-the-top flashy special effects and tell the legendary tale in a straight-forward manner. They still have to keep the basics of the story and the dramatic high points -- Moses having a spiritual epiphany on Mount Sinai, the plagues that made Pharaoh release the enslaved Israelites, the crossing of the Red Sea, and so on --but it would be great to see it all done in a believable manner instead of through distracting computer-generated-imaging.

A gritty, realistic depiction of the story would be a great, fresh way to retell the life of Moses faithfully and respectfully, and I'm sure it would be a rousing bit of entertainment as well.

Spielberg has just finished filming Lincoln and will jump on his adaptation of Robopocalypse next.  I look forward to his Moses biopic, which Deadline.com says has the working title Gods and Kings.  Can't wait!

Um.. I don't know..

I'm trying to imagine how they're going to tell some of those tales without special effects.. ;).

Robopocalypse?!

:D

Rated for I guess Spielberg will do what suits him just 'cause he can.
I have no particular thoughts here, Nick. I am not a Bible kinda dude, especially The Old Testament. Unless one is a scholar, we only know The Book according to DeMille. How far did he stretch Exodus (you think he even read it?). We only think of Ramses as Yul Brynner and Moses as Chuck Heston. Are we ready to toss out ABC's presentation every Good Friday or Saturday before Easter, the longest running special on TV?

It was a good history lesson on Deadline.com and Spielberg is going to have to go far to write script like, "Lips as moist and red like a pomegranate." Or, the most memorable line in movies.........
"His God is God". Good luck topping that.
I wonder if Moses will be told faithfully... Interesting post.
If this movie is to be made, then Spielberg is the only one who can make it Box Office.
It will be near impossible to top the DeMille version which will always be a classic and the definitive cinemative telling of the Moses story. But it's a great story, and I can't blame them for trying to tap into that well again. As long as it's a fresh take, it'll be interesting to see (like when Spielberg's DreamWorks studio made the cartoon version Prince of Egypt.)

And Margaret, please, no 3D!!! Haha.
To see Big Stars of today - in a new epic such as this with fresh dialogue ought to be quite a spectacle! R
